Overview

EMG Pickups, along with legendary artist Geezer Butler, have collaborated to develop the GZR-P and GZR-PJ signature bass sets. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bass player started working with EMG founder Rob Turner in 2011, looking to find the classic bass tone he had in Black Sabbath's early days. As Geezer and Black Sabbath moved from studio to touring in 2013, the final component of getting the classic Geezer tone was in play, the rigors of a world tour.

To recapture Geezer's early Black Sabbath tone, it meant a new EMG vintage-style passive P & PJ design with a few modern touches. The all solderless P set uses Alnico 5 pole pieces and custom-wound coils for just the right amount of punch and grit. The J (PJ set) also uses Alnico 5 poles and features two custom-wound split-coils that both eliminate the noise and hum usually associated with early '70s bass pickups and allow for more power and volume than any other standard single-coil J, giving this set remarkable balance between the P & J. The result is unmistakable early Geezer Butler bass tone with deep, tight low end that you can hear on "Iron Man," "War Pigs" and "Paranoid." Said Geezer, "I never felt comfortable giving my name to any other pickups, but this time these have blown me away."

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature P Bass Pickup Set:

I bought these pickups for my American made Fender P Bass for some extra growl and fullness which proved to be worth it for me. Also, one can always turn the tone knob back a little to take out the growl but keep the richness these pickups provide. Installation was a breeze (with no soldering), although two quick tips that the instructions didn't include – keep the arrows on the connectors up and it appears the black and white wires are reversed on the input jack instruction diagram (if you get no sound, reverse these). The quality, look, and most importantly the sound are keepers.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature P Bass Pickup Set:

Wanted new PUPs in my Squier 60s CV. Tried some Lace Sensors and I wasn't quite right (love the ones in my guitar though). Took a chance on these and was rewarded with a true P sound. Easy to install, clarity at all frequencies and vintage sound to boot. I don't typically like EMG PUPs because of ceramics and no pole pieces, but these are the best of all worlds.

I got a Dean $200 bass. Wanted to upgrade rather buy another bass
& try to find 1 that's comfortable. Gzr pickups added growl to the sound.
Electronics actually work on my bass now. Awesome

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature P Bass Pickup Set:

These are great sounding pups! I got the p/j set 1st for a squire and was blown away by how easy they were to install, any one could do it. But the sound(sounds) you can get, anything from Motown to Sabbeth to Pink! You can do it all and get any sound you want. I got a p bass set next for my fender and ya! same thing.....what ever sound you want. They cut through the mix great! The pots that come with them are smooth and I feel like I get better tone control also. I've used SD quarter pounders and the Steve Harris pickups, also the fender 62's. the EMGs sound sooo much better plus you get new pots!

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature P Bass Pickup Set:

This took two hours to install, because the grounds on the bodies of the pots were connected to the same metal strip on the pickguard that the body of the jack was connected to. But, the body of the jack was connected to I/O, shorting out the signal. I had to cut the metal strip to prevent it from connecting the pots to the jack.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature P Bass Pickup Set:

Easiest pickup installation I have ever done in my life. No solder, done in a flash and my P is thumpin. Never been a fan of EMG's active bass stuff as I always thought they sounded too clinical and sterial. These pickups are different.

Comments about EMG Geezer Butler Signature P Bass Pickup Set:

These pickups are the best I've ever heard. It really gives you that classic Precision bass sound that personally I've been looking for for years. The installation was great except for (and this is just my luck, it had nothing to do with the pickups and electronics) it took me about an hour and a half longer than it should have...but the solderless installation was great! All and all, there fantastic pickups. And you definitely can't go wrong with the price. All and all, I've been playing contemporary, rock, light rock and even some metal and they sound great for basically any genre
