  • EMG P-X/PA-X Active Bass Pickup Set

As reviewed by Brian on 5/24/2011

I purchased these pickups as replacements for my made in Mexico Fender Precision Bass. The directions are very clear and thorough. This set comes with almost everything you need to install the pickups in most situations. Pickups do not come with foam or springs to hold them up, I bought adhesive high density foam from the local hardware store and stuck it in the pickup cavity under each pickup. Read the directions carefully so that you understand the wiring and get everything plugged in properly. Take your time There are several wiring diagrams so make sure you choose the appropriate one for your guitar and pickup configuration. The EMG solder-less connect system made the whole process easier and less time-consuming. All the wires connect with plastic connectors and the colored diagram explains each step with illustration. *NOTE* If you are replacing standard pickups that have a ground running to the bridge remove it along with the original electronics. These EMG pickups are internally shielded and don't need a ground to the bridge. Making sure there are no stressed or severely bent areas of any wire is a good idea so everything fits snug but a little loosely. ***NOTE*** the control cavity in my MIM Precision was not large enough to accommodate the EMG universal terminal or the 9-volt battery (not sure if its like this for all fenders), so I had to carve out additional space in the cavity using a rotary tool with a cutting tip, using a finer tip to get the corners. After some careful carving I was able to make it all fit snugly. Hit it with compressed air and put the pick-guard back on and it was done. Aside from having to carve out the cavity it was an easy install. As far as the sound, I have EMGs in a few other basses so I am already familiar with and love the sound. They really sound terrific in my P bass. Tone is nicely enhanced and there is a lot more headroom..I've installed the P-X and the PA-X and both feature the newly designed pre-amp so the tone is great on both..the PA-X uses the alnico magnets which makes it my favorite P pickup set because they sound very warm and give it a more vintage-esque feel. There are videos on the EMG website where you can listen to the various P pickups, the videos do them no justice but you will get an idea of how great they sound. If you are looking to replace pickups in a Fender P or any P style bass these are the ones for the job. Awesome sound, superior design and craftsmanship, excellent value. Buy them!
