I've owned a single DR-VX1 for several years, now and already know of the quality, ruggedness and sonic performance of the brand. My favorite dynamic microphones are the Sennheizer E-838's. They have a wide pickup pattern, superb frequency response and great feedback rejection. The DRV-100's from Digital Reference are very close in those same sonic qualities for much less in price. In retrospect, I should have purchased a couple dozen of these during the sale.

The DRV100 is a great mic for starting out in podcasting or home recording. I used it for about 5 months on my own show before upgrading. It has a clear sound that does not sound muddy, but tends a little toward the "tinny" side. The one drawback I have found is its handling noise. Every touch or brush up comes through even when placed in a shock mount. Overall it is a great mic for the beginner who wants to start up right away on a budget.

What a great live performing mic at a great price

By Brian

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

I've had this mic about 6 months now and have zero complaints. It's built compact, but rugged. It has a little more weight to it than you would expect from looking at it. It's a little Sherman tank in your hand. Built very durable. I like the no on / off switch. One less thing to go wrong plus more comfortable holding. Sound wise, it's great. I don't have to project near as much as other mics I've owned. It does the work for me. I am of the opinion that this is the best value of all the mics at GC. Great price, great mic.

A solid 4 star mic

By Larry Overton

from Corpus Christi, Texas

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

Previous 5 star reviews of the DRV100 might be misleading if one doesn't take the time to read the actual comments. Each qualifies their 5 star rating with "good for the money" caveats. I offer the same caveat. PROs: I needed 3 mics for backup/occasional lead singing. This mic was on sale at my local GC, so I'm very happy with the purchase. The sound quality is good, sufficient for our group's purposes. The all metal body/grille does seem to be durable. Mine have been accidently dropped during performance a couple of times, without affecting performance and with no signs of external/cosmetic damage. CONs: I would have been a little disappointed if I had paid full price for each. If I was going to pay that much, I would have gone with a Shure SM48. The sound quality is good, but not on a par with a Shure. The DRV100 is susceptible to handling noise. The Digital Reference DRV100 is a solid, decent quality vocal mic, but the best part about it is the price, especially when on sale.

Perfectly Good Mic

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

This is a perfectly good mic. I own several that I use for band practice and I bring a couple to gigs just in case. It is built well and sounds fine for rock, country, pop, etc. Is it a big time piece of gear with great curb appeal? No. But it'll get you through the night. If you are a beginner and don't want to spend a lot of money, if you're on a tight budget, or if you just want to have some reliable backups, this is a great way to go. They're affordable and a fair value at regular price but GC puts them on sale a few times each year. Grab a handful then and it's a borderline steal.

Great mike for the money

By ron

from Syracuse, NY

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

I got 2 of these as part of a package deal. I was told they'd be OK but not great. WRONG. I already have a Shure sm58 and the DRV100 competes quite well with the sm58. I did same song comparisons and I couldn't tell the difference. Even had a friend, who's played in a band for 40 years, listen and he was really surprised at the sound of the DRV100. I was gonna sell both but now I'll keep one as a back-up.

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

The mike has nice range and sound for me. I like it better then my shure mike. I use it for my main mike and like the sound. Well worth the price.

Digital Reference TO WHAT

By Bales Robert

from Independence, MO

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

I went to my local GC and bought a Digital Reference DRV-100. What a waist of money. I own two Electro-Voice Cobalt 9 Microphones. In comparison between the two the Electro-Voice beat it hands down. I run a small Karaoke Service, back yard parties, Birthdays, and other venues. I needed an extra Microphone, so I bought this one. I had to turn the gain up on the DRV-100 quite a bit to get it to match the gain of the Cobalt 9. I'm so ashamed of this Mic I won't let my singers sing with it. Now it sets in its box, unless I need it. I use it to announce my next singers. As an announcement mic it is only ok. For the same price as the DRV-100, I can buy a much better Microphone. Buy an Electro-Voice Cobalt 9. You'll have a great Microphone.

Neophite Vocal Shopper

By Randall Scott

from Martinez, GA

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

As a beginner on the vocal side of music (I play guitars - both acoustic and electric), decided to get a PA system instead of using my guitar amplifiers; and for microphones, this one is quite hard to beat for the price. I am very happy with it.

Great Value for this mike

By BRIAN

from Amherst, VA

Comments about Digital Reference DRV100 Dynamic Cardioid Handheld Mic:

I really appreciate the power and quality of this microphone for the price point. I am running it through the Samson EX150 portable PA and it has much more output than the Shure SM48. It does have a fair amount of surface noise due to it's sensitivity and output, but a little tennis racquet overgrip should take care of that. For casual gigs and everyday use I think it is a real winner for those on a budget.

I've always been using a Beta 58A Shure mic as long as I've been singing and I bought this mic because it was very cheap in price to have as a backup and so IF I ever have a guest vocalist they can use this extra mic. My Beta58A gave out so Ive been using this mic. This mic actually picks up just like my Beta58A which is way more expensive than this mic. This mic for the price is a steal. I definitely will be getting a few more for the band. :) thanks

I have also used it when providing sound reinforcement, live & home studio recording for other bands. It also does a good job as an acoustic instrument microphone. Outstanding performance for the price.

I bought several of these when they were on sale, a great buy on a decent mic for doing in-studio recording for podcasts. They do the job well, and while you can't expect them to do the same thing a $1000 dollar mic will do, it is very adequate for spoken word, music vocals, even picking up stringed instruments. .
