Overview

The DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup brings the famous performance of The Tone Zone to a humbucking Strat replacement pickup. Built-in is the tremendous mid-range and bass response of the original Tone Zone, and the same patented dual-resonance design produces great harmonics. DiMarzio also took into account the likelihood of installing The Tone Zone S in the classic slanted Strat bridge position, warming up the higher frequencies and brightening the low notes a little. It has 4-conductor wiring for parallel humbucking and split-coil modes, and makes a great bridge position combination with the Pro Track (our sku# 302326), The Chopper (our sku# 302460), and Fast Track 1 (our sku# 302441).

Recommended For: Bridge position, solid body guitars. Neck position when a very warm jazz guitar sound is required.

Tech Talk: If you compare the specs of the full-size Tone Zone with those of the Tone Zone S, you will notice they don't match. That's because the trick in building a single-coil size pickup to sound like its big brother is to go for the sound rather than the numbers. DiMarzio also took into account the likelihood that the Tone Zone S will be installed in the classic slanted Strat bridge position, so they warmed up the higher frequencies and brightened the low notes a little to compensate.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I found the Area 61 to be thin sounding for my style. Switched to the Tone Zone S, much better. Good rock tones, and still has the Strat quack in the out of phase positions. Just remember to use the green wire for the hot when pairing it with the Area 58s, otherwise it will be in phase with the middle pickup, and you'll lose your typical Strat tones.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I have a partscaster Strat that is very high quality. 1-piece alder body with thin nitro finish, flame maple neck with darker rosewood fretboard, gold hardware. It's a great feeling guitar, and beautiful, but my first choice of pickups were Klein Vintage ones and were very low output. Pretty nice but I preferred my other guitars. I replaced the pickups with a Tone Zone S in the bridge and a pair of Criusers in neck and middle. This has now become my go to guitar. The neck and middle are beautifully warm and great for anything from jazzy cleans to blues to rock leads. The bridge Tone Zone S is awesome! I can play anything on that but it stands out with heavier riffs. Even drop tuned stuff is tight and punchy and the notes are clearly distinguishable. This is an amazing combination of pickups. I went from totally ignoring this guitar to loving it and using it all the time.

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I should start out by saying I play metal mostly, and I hate any single coil pup. Most of my strats have the hot rails in the bridge, but I took a chance on something different and I'm glad I did!! Gives the Hot Rail a run for it's money. I installed the Chopper in the neck position and it is a perfect match.

              Excellent, excellent strat pickups

Comments about DiMarzio DP189 Tone Zone S Strat Humbucker Pickup:

I replaced the stock bridge pickup on my MIM strat with this. I am very happy I did. It sounds absolutely awesome. I didn't pick it for its clean sounds, mostly for hi gain stuff, and it sounds very, very good. Very defined and tight, not muddy at all but still plenty of lows. Perfect for anything rock, hard rock or metal. I think I prefer it to the JB in my LTD EC401, which I feel is a little muddy on the low side.

This is by far the best sounding single coil sized pickup I have ever found for a strat. I have one in my tele as well. Nice fat warm sound, still twangy of you split it. Awesome quality!
