Hot, clean, and open.

The Steve's Special is a non-traditional approach to high-output bridge humbucking guitar pickup design. Most hot humbuckers concentrate the pickup's power in a narrow frequency range for maximum impact. The Special spreads the sound over a broader range so bass and treble tones are boosted, and midrange is lowered. The result is a sound that's hot, clean, and open at the same time. 390mV output.

DiMarzio DP161F Steve's Special Guitar Pickup F-Spaced Features:

  • Clean overdrive with high-gain amps
Very effective in dual sound and coil splitting clean modes
For soloing, this is a very good pickup to play with a midrange-heavy amp
The mid-scoop in the pickups' sound keeps the initial pick attack clean and the notes don't run together as much with legato playing, even with heavy overdrive

DiMarzio DP161F Steve's Special Guitar Pickup F-Spaced Specifications:

    Magnet Ceramic
    Output 390mV
    DC Resistance 17.89K
    Year of introduction 1995

This is the second time I have chosen a Steve's Special Humbucker,Fspaced in Black..I have one in my 1992 RG FMTB,and the new one is going in my 1991 RG570 FM CA..Either that or it might get installed into my 1987 RG560..BUt I digress..I LOVE these pickups because they ALWAYS sound great..Clear,crisp,and cooperative..and QUIET..I love that with a small change to my EQ settings in my Boss GT8 I can change the sound..Cleans are super crisp, and overdriven chords are amazing..Thanks again for a super purchase..Rock on People.!

  • A very bright, clear, Hi-Fi tone...

As reviewed by Laika on 10/27/2006

I picked-up one of these pickups, a while back, to use in the bridge position of an Ibanez JS100 guitar. It is an unusual tone in a humbucker. Very "open" sound with discernably scooped mids. I think it delves into single-coil territory with it's response on the lower-register strings in that it retains some bright twang, and has a glassy-sounding high-end. It is advertised to keep it's clarity even with heavy-distortion sounds. I like that DiMarzio has kept their prices down, as well. This would be a good pickup to use where good single-note clarity is desired for chording and soloing.

  • not for mahogany

As reviewed by TIM on 1/1/2015

I was looking for an articulate pickup with well defined highs for my mahogany gibson flying V . I watched all the vids I could find on this pup and it looked good on paper so I bought one. In the vids it sounded like what I wanted however I couldn't find a vid of this pup in an all mahogany guitar .Well in my V it was everything I didn't want .It sounded mushy the bottom end was so undefined it was terrible and there was no note seperation when playing chords . In short this pickup was horrible. so if your planning on dropping this in an all mahogany guitar I would say pass .However it may sound good in something with a maple cap to give it some snap and definition. a side note . I swapped out the ceramic mag for an alnico 5 and it changed the character of the pickup completely and now it sounds great .
