Superb appointments and sound at a manageable price!

Deering's most popular professional grade banjo for almost 20 years. Greg Deering knows what it feels like to want a professional banjo and not be able to afford it, so this has become the flagship of their line. The Sierra is affordable with all the most important features that affect the tone and playability. Simple detailing allows Deering to keep the cost down, while still giving you all the important components of a high quality banjo.

The heirloom-quality, professional Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo features a sand-cast, virgin bell bronze, genuine Deering tone ring mounted to a 3-ply rock-maple rim with a one-piece resonator flange. The mahogany neck, resonator with ebony fingerboard, planet-style tuning pegs, and satin finish enhance the classic appearance and playability of this powerful and affordable banjo. Deering includes a $180-value case with your Sierra Banjo.

Deering Sierra 5-String Banjo

Deering banjos with the lifetime warranty are only available through authorized Deering Dealers.

IF YOU BUY A "NEW" DEERING BANJO FROM A NON-AUTHORIZED DEALER, YOU HAVE PURCHASED A USED BANJO AND HAVE NO WARRANTY. When we send a Deering banjo to an authorized dealer, only that dealer or another authorized dealer can sell that banjo as new. If an authorized dealer sells a new Deering banjo to a non-authorized dealer, the non authorized dealer becomes the first owner and he becomes the bearer of the lifetime warranty; not a new dealer by transfer. When the unauthorized dealer sells that banjo to the consumer, even if it was never played or even touched, it is a used instrument and no longer carries the lifetime warranty. This is necessary so that we know how the banjo has been cared for between the time we ship it and the time that our customers buy it. We have no way of knowing how non-authorized dealers care for their instruments because we do not communicate with them. This also honors and protects the strong relationship between Deering and its treasured network of hard working Deering dealers. For your protection against theft and to ensure immediate proof of ownership, four digits of the serial number are visible on the back of the peghead on each banjo. The full serial number is inside the resonator. When you purchase a Deering banjo and send in the warranty card you will receive a Gold Credit card style ownership/warranty card. This gold card is embossed with your name and the serial number of your new banjo for easy identification. Take your Gold Card with you to festivals or when traveling so that if your banjo is ever stolen you can easily prove it's yours.

  • STOP and LISTEN to this banjo FIRST before you buy any banjo.

As reviewed by RAYMOND L on 4/7/2015

Before you lay down a bunch of cash on a banjo. STOP!!! This banjo deserves a good listen and check before looking at any other banjo. DEERING created this banjo to be played and often. IF you are going to buy a bluegrass banjo and want a high quality banjo and IF you can afford to do it, do your self a favor and get this one. Yes you can go get other banjos buy at least try one of these. DEERING is all the banjo you need to know and this will be my next banjo. I have played a lot of banjos and I even played a pre war Gibson. those things cost as much as a house and that is not a joke, close to 100 grand and sometimes more. i will personally tell you this DEERING SIERRA has just as good a tone as a GIBSON pre war and it has all the right stuff that a bluegrass banjo should have, less spikes or some other form of capo for the 5th string and you may also want to add a set of Keith D tuners on the 2nd and 3rd strings if you like playing those Earl Scruggs tunes.Get a good cradle strap and a good set of picks too. I use Jim Dunlop Steel thumb pick and finger picks for banjo pickin and you can get all that stuff right in guitar center. Need a pickup to play through and amp? Order the Sierra with the DEERING pickup and you will be glad you did. I like to play through a mic bluegrass style or acoustically at jam sessions that can go on all night long till the next morning. This banjo comes with a case and it is a very good one too. When you pick this banjo you are going to hear one of the sweetest rings you have ever heard in a high quality banjo. This is what DEERING does is banjos and they do em right. This model is one that wont cost as much as a house and sounds as great as a pre war. By the way, DEERING has the pre war style banjo too and is it one Amazingly sweet sounding banjo. As far as it goes with a professional grade bluegrass banjo with a tone ring that sings like and angel and a total package the way DEERING makes banjos, GET THIS BANJO. Guitar center does some fast shipping too if you order on line. You will have 2 choices of wood with this model. I like Mahogany for the old 1950s Earl Scruggs tone and there is Maple for the later sound. IF you are looking for a banjo and if you want an AMERICAN MADE banjo with top notch bluegrass tone and have the cash, GET THIS BANJO! IF you play this banjo first, you may not want anything else but a DEERING. As soon as finances allow I WILL own this banjo and it WILL get a work out. as many of these Sierras as i have played, I loved em all. Their tone is very sweet. The neck is already a satin finish and does not really need the 0000 steel wool treatment. I do that to ALL my axes to smooth the necks but this banjo is already like that out of the case and set up and ready to go to work, less capo and D tuners and if you want DEERING can install em at the factory for you or if you are in a real hurry DEERING sells a strap capo for the 5th string or there are a few other tips on this. Just get a DEERING Sierra you will love it.
