Overview

This 3-pack of replacement packets for Planet Waves' Humidipak humidification system is an affordable way to keep your acoustic instrument at its proper relative humidity. The packets last from 2-6 months, so ordering a three pack can last you anywhere from half a year to a year-and-a-half.

The patented, two-way Humidipak humidification system (sold separately) is a two-way humidity controller that's recommended by Taylor guitars and other leading manufacturers for maintaining the stability and playability of your instrument. This humidification system maintains 45-50% relative humidity, eliminating all maintenance and guesswork. No more guessing if or when to refill the humidifier and worrying about drips or creating a mess. Unlike other refillable humidifiers, the Humidipak humidity controller acts as a gauge because it provides true two-way, purified humidity control. It adds or reduces moisture as needed to maintain proper relative humidity, which is the ideal climate for wooden instruments such as acoustic guitars.

Just place 2 packets in the double pouch, place the double pouch over your D and G strings, and let it hang down into the soundhole. Place the third Humidipak replacement packet under your guitar's headstock while in its case. Close the case and you're done! The packet will last anywhere from 2-6 months, depending on the humidity where you instrument is located. When the Humidipak packet becomes firm, discard it and replace it with another Humidipak replacement packet.

I was using a Kysor humidifier that went over the guitar sound hole but stoppe using it over concerns for newly installed electronics not liking moisture. I moved the same humidifier to the small space where the guitar neck heel and the case storage compartment meet. Trouble is the case closes tight up against the body offering no chance for the humidifier to work. Then I learned about this system. I purchased the system and installed the single pack in the upper tuner portion of the case and the double pack into the sound hole. I wasn't as concerned about the electronics because there isn't direct conveyence of the moisture from a wet sponge to the body. The packs lasted about 3.5 months in a relatively wet environment. When I replaced them it had turned to winter and the environment became very dry due to our heating system. The packs lasted only about 2.5 months which I found acceptable. Due to the extreme dryness (roughly 20% RH) I also re-installed the Kysor unit. I want to note that I use my guitar a lot and leave the case closed when the guitar is out so I don't know why the other reviewer isn't experiencing the same success as I have.

For years I've struggled with the humidity issue in cold climates. Recently I purchased a new Taylor with their custom designed gig bag so thought I would try this humidification solution. I wasn't too thrilled about the possibility of replacement packs, but if they lasted as predicted, then it would be manageable. I've installed one set of packs in my guitar case and they only lasted one month. This was after ensuring the case was always closed and frequently putting them back in the sealed zip-loc bag they came in when the case was open for an extended period of time. So I need to find a more economical and effective solution since I am playing every day and frequently open my case. For long-term storage of an instrument, this would be a very good solution, especially since one would not take the time to monitor regularly, but for an instrument that is in regular use, I'm looking at another alternative.

Effective but Short-Term Solution

Doesnt work in the desert

By Gary H

from Las Vegas NV

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves HuMIDIpak Replacement Packets - 3 Pack:

I recently purchased a Taylor 314ce from GC and was told by the mgr. to use the Humidipaks Humidifier system to protect my guitar. I purchased the system and the paks got firm within 2 weeks. I assumed the problem was with the GC paks due to age. I went online and bought 3 more paks and put them in 2/8/11. Today is 2/16/11 and they are already firm and need to be replaced. At this rate is will cost between $75 and $100 per month to use this system. Either they dont work in the desert or my case from Taylor is far from airtight. I think they simply dont work in dry, arid climates like Las Vegas. I have contacted Hummidipak in Minnesota and they are looking into it.

Great low maintenance option, just not cheap

By Chris Olson

from Olathe, KS

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves HuMIDIpak Replacement Packets - 3 Pack:

This humidification system is great in that it's super low maintenance. No measuring the humidity levels, and no messing with filling up containers or wetting sponges. You stick them in, and you're set. Simple as that. I started using these on my brand new acoustic and there was an immediate improvement in my tone and sustain. Proper humidity is everything! The only downside is that they don't last THAT long. But it depends on where you live and your specific climate. I am in KC, and it gets very dry in the winter. I was going through these in under a month. But now that Spring has hit, the current pack has lasted ALOT longer. In the summer it gets crazy humid, so we'll see what happens then. The other big plus? There is ZERO chance of you getting water on the wood in your guitar, which can be bad. That kind of safety is important.

Common Sense

By Kathleen Gentry

from Indianapolis

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves HuMIDIpak Replacement Packets - 3 Pack:

I can't believe the reviews on this one item "humidipak"...I personally am very happy with this product. I don't have a problem if I need to purchase this product every month (so far my first set is over 6 weeks of use) for my new classical guitar "it's worth the money". I have a humidity/temp gage in the guitar case and everything is doing perfectly fine. It's common sense, simply common sense and the ease of using these that makes it worth the money. If I lived in the dessert I would expect them not to last very long. People so many times want a miracle and expect way too much and can be very unreasonable. I wouldn't be without these and the ease/convenience are worth every penny.

By richard zaia

from leesburg va

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves HuMIDIpak Replacement Packets - 3 Pack:

these are great but a little pricy.. At the curent GC price they are better than great. i can go with about two of these per year per Guitar where i live..( Northern Va).. I severly harmed one of my high end taylors with a drip from the old stlye.. No more of those for me... Suggestion.. Keep youe Guitar case closed when you playing with these inside... they will last longer... Rich

Good concept but needs improvement.

By Andrew

from Northern Ky

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves HuMIDIpak Replacement Packets - 3 Pack:

I got this system last month for my Yamaha and it does maintain the relative humidity. The problem is that I can't get them to maintain the proper level. It stays around 30% in the case. Which is the same in the house. I also dislike having to fork out the cash every few months. The design is nice and I like the fact that it comes with a bag for the case and the sound hole, but the first set of packs last 2 weeks. I'm hoping this set will last more than a month. If it doesn't I'll looking for something that I will have to maintain.

Doesn't Last Long

By Michael Jackson

from Oklahoma City, OK

Comments about D'Addario Planet Waves HuMIDIpak Replacement Packets - 3 Pack:

After buying my new name brand acoustic, I knew I needed a good humidifying solution. It's a good quality project and a good idea, but the humidipaks only lasted 5 weeks. The guitar case was never left open, and it's not like I live in the dessert. The average relative humidity in Oklahoma City is in the 45% range and I would expect the humidipaks to last quite awhile. I'm very disappointed.
