  • Great strings for acoustic bass

As reviewed by Mike on 1/1/2015

I wanted to move to flat wound strings on my Breedlove acoustic bass to get a more mellow sound. I had been using D' Addario EXP PBB170 round wound strings but I decided they were too bright. I tried some Fender 9050L flat wound strings and had to remove some of the thread wrap around the low E string (.100) to get it to fit through the bridge and it was still a really tight fit. The heavier gauge Fender strings played a hair sharp going up the neck even with the truss rod adjusted. The D'Addario Chromes ECB80 are a lighter gauge and have a .095 low E string that fits through the bridge no problem. The lighter gauge strings also play a little flatter up the neck so they play in tune better up the neck. I love the smooth feel of the flat wound strings and there is less fret buzzing when my finger pressure behind the fret isn't perfect. Acoustically they are not as load as the round wound strings but that is not a problem for me.

  • So far...

As reviewed by Patrick James McKenna on 1/21/2010

I won't give a 5 Star rating because somewhere there has to be a better set of strings. The better strings are probably made by D'Addario. I had some problems finding replacement strings for a Rogue AB-304 acoustic electric bass. The low E string wouldn't fit bridge. I finally decided to try out a set of D'Addario ECB80 strings. The .095 sized E string fit. (The other strings were also an easy fit.) These strings exceeded my expectations. For anyone who is in the process of breaking the epidemic addiction to roundwound strings, I highly recommend the D'Addario ECB80.
