Overview

Surf's up! And we're all headed to Topanga, Catalinbread's spring reverb pedal based on the legendary Fender 6G15 outboard spring reverb unit! They've captured all the drip, flutter, cluck, clang, and splash of the original tubes and springs unit in a small pedal format!

The outboard spring reverb unit is the sound of surf guitar as well as many other great guitar sounds from the '60s. Part of its magic, and how it differs from the internal spring reverb found in most Fender-style amps, is that it is run *in front* of the amp, causing the reverb signal to distort and get more intense than the internal circuit could. It also had a Dwell knob, which controlled how hard the springs were getting hit by the guitar signal, as well as a Tone knob that gave more control over the reverb sound. It was also essentially a tube preamp, so it would color the sound going into the amp.

All this added up to a very distinctive reverb sound that is hard to replicate. But Catalinbread had to try! And we think they got it! Besides giving you the classic three knob control compliment of the original, they've also added a great discrete preamp that you can control via the Volume knob for a healthy amount of great clean boost when you want it.

Comments about Catalinbread Topanga Spring Reverb Guitar Effects Pedal:

While this is a great recreation of a spring reverb, I could not use it in the line level, buffered effects loops of my Fender/EVH 5150 III 50W head because this is not a line level friendly pedal. I like to use reverbs and delays after the pre amp distortion of my amps. I even spoke to the manufacturer and they couldn't tell me the max input and output levels in dB of the pedal. I ended up returning the pedal. In this day and age, if TC Electronics, MXR, Way Huge and Maxon can make effects loops friendly pedals, you'd think a boutique vendor would follow suit. Pedals should be able to be used in front of the amp and in an amp's effects loop. Because of this experience, I won't buy a Catalinbread product again.

They finally figured it out.

Comments about Catalinbread Topanga Spring Reverb Guitar Effects Pedal:

Nothing beats an actual outboard tube driven spring tank, but this little box gets closer then any other pedal ever has. I would know. I've tried EVERYTHING. Only the trained ear of a veteran surf player will be able to tell the difference. The Topanga serves up all the surfy goods. Plenty of drip, splash, and drive for the taking. Subtle verb is easy to dial in too but who'd want to do that? Get this. You won't be sorry.
