Overview

From fat crunch to ultra high-gain distortion, the BOSS ST-2 Power Stack distortion pedal delivers famous BOSS distortion with a stunning amount of power that's akin to coveted tube amps and professional amp stacks. The Sound knob simultaneously blends gain amount and sound character, so you can quickly dial up anything from vintage crunch and punchy drive to full-assault distortion. To add further detail to your tone, simply tweak the onboard two-band EQ to taste.

The ST-2 is one very unique distortion pedal, calling on the years of amp-modeling research BOSS has done to bring you real stack sounds in a compact stompbox.

Tower of Power
The ST-2 Power Stack distortion pedal delivers the playing feel and power that are hallmarks of stack amps. It was derived from BOSS' extensive analysis of the sound and characteristics of a vast number of classic guitar amps. This distortion effect delivers authentic tone and expression that responds naturally to picking nuances and volume changes on your guitar. But emulation is only the beginning, as the ST-2 has the ability to go beyond the sound of real amps.

Crunch, Drive, Ultra High Gain
The ST-2 lets you enjoy a rich, clean tone when playing soft, and smoothly transition into a fat crunch as you play harder-great for rock ballads or songs that require dramatic tone shifts. Imagine the powerful, driving sound of a stack amplifier. An authentic classic-rock tone is here as well, with crisp overtones. Turn up the Sound knob for a heavy-metal tone. The ST-2 allows extreme high gain, but offers a powerful low-end and sharp edge at the same time.

Sound Knob
The SOUND knob is a controller that is uniquely BOSS. Simply set it to the tone type you're looking for. The SOUND knob not only changes gain but sound character as well, from brisk crunch and spectacular drive to earth-shaking ultrahigh gain.

Road-Tough BOSS construction
BOSS compact pedals are world-famous for their great sound as well as their road-tough construction, consistency, and reliability. The ST-2 Power Stack inherits this BOSS-proven design, offering guitarists a solidly constructed pedal that's built to withstand decades of demanding use.

Features
  • Original distortion sound reminiscent of tube-based stack amplifiers
  • Provides a wide range of tones, from vintage crunch to ultra high-gain modern distortion
  • Faithful and accurate response to picking nuances and volume changes
  • Sound Knob controls both gain level and sound character
  • Two-band EQ with dedicated Bass and Treble knobs

This pedal is awesome, truly it is. I must say that I enjoyed it for the short while that I had it. I had to take the pedal back as I couldn't get anything out of it that I currently cant' get. The pedal is great for the distortion effect. It does do its job well, but people who have been playing for a while may not find a "diamond in the rough" with this one. Having two other pedals, though this one is good, it just offered me nothing new. If you have the money and need a good pedal, pick it up. Anything from Pearl Jam to Green Day to Disturbed can be played with it.

I was very excited to get my hands on this pedal. Then very sad after I plugged it in. It has a very defined tone thats very mid-rangey.. the lack of a mid tone control limits this pedal greatly. The other issue I found is that when the gain/drive is maxed out into the Ultra area, it really gave alot of hiss/pedal noise. It gave off more noise then my boss metal zone. For the pedal to have an ultra tone on the dial, it was anything but. It had a very distinctive DS-1 flavor to it. Im not a fan of the DS-1 pedal. It appears that boss was trying to give two pedals in one.. it kinda failed in my mind. Will look at the Hardwire valve distortion next. Oh well.. its the fun of trying new things. The bottom line.. the pedal didnt seem to have alot of jump in it.

OK, But proceed with caution

By Neil Kraft

from NW Ohio

I would love to give this pedal 5 stars because I think Boss pedals are the greatest thing since sliced tomatoes. Ive been a loyal Boss pedal stomper since the early 80s and still use them for performing, recording, and all sorts of audio manipulation. However we've entered the age of sound modeling and making small things look and sound big. The power stack is a good example of this. The Power Stack does make you sound like you are playing through a wall of Marshalls but this only happens while using a small combo amp at room level volumes. In fact it sounds great and would be a good recording pedal effect as well. Here is why I wont give it 5 stars: Using this pedal on a larger amp(100 watt) or even a 50 watt amp at higher volumes for gigging and performing just doesnt work tone wise or sonically. Setting the distortion level past midpoint (ultra) has a nice overdrive sound but a terrible hiss behind it. This may sound silly but what I look forward to in Boss pedals is their simplicity. My Blues driver, Super overdrive, and DS-1 do not have Bass/treble controls ,only one tone and a level, and I like that. I have enough choices in my life and more eq knobs just bothers me. The price is a bit high for a what it actually does, I know what it takes to build a distortion pedal and theres not much difference between the DS-1 or SD-2 as far as guts and the ST-2 Power Stack. I get the feeling popularity has a bit to do with the price of some of these pedals. All in all the pedal does what it says it does, but reading the fine print wont matter much, there is none, are none, whatever. Boss is trying to keep up with all the modeling technology out there, cant really blame them. Gotta try it before you buy it.

Great Sound!

By Dylan Ewing

from Phoenix, AZ

The pedal is a great effect to add if you are into a heavy crunchy metal sound! You can mess with it but it reminds me mostly of older metal and sounds great when it's plugged into my Orange Rockerverb 100 Watt! I would definitely recommend this to anybody who play's guitar.

Good but buzz

By Anthony Baker

from Everett, WA

I got this pedal on clearance at guitar center just after Christmas, and i love the sound. The only problem is the buzz when the drive is up high, but I'm planning on buying a noise suppressor next so it's not a huge deal. But it has a great range in sound. I can use it well with a low crunch for music in my youth worship band, or crank the drive for great punk distortion, and the bass and treble both go from none to a ton, so the range is fantastic, I would re3commend it but if you like lots of drive, consider a noise suppressor too!

Blown Away

By TSMF

from Salem, OR

I love this pedal. I use mostly the Ultra area setting which I think sounds great out of the box. I've seen alot of people saying that this pedal makes alot of noise, but I havent had any problems with that and I play at all sorts of volume levels. Granted if you have your amp dimed and are 3 feet away expect some feedback. You can do anything from Vintage Led Zep to Niel Young to Iron Maiden to Tallica to Megadeth to Santana. Just take some time with it and get your own settings. And if you want a more scooped tone you need to spend some time dialing in your amp as well as your pedal. *hint play with the bass up around 1 o'clock and your treble at 11 o'clock on your amps then use your pedal eqs

Can't get enough of this pedal

By Warren Perry

from Annandale, VA

The tone of this pedal is great and what I am looking for. I love the Ultra sound setting. The Ultra sound setting gives me that liquid overdrive/distortion sound I have been searching for. This pedal delivers overdrive with a hint of distortion. I was using the Boss OverDrive/Distortion OS-2 pedal to provide me with the right combination, but I found it with the powerstack. I am enjoying the sounds from this pedal. The bass and treble settings work great with the pedal to adjust the tone. I do wish you can change the mid range. The only downside is that the Ultra setting is a bit noisy, but the noise is not overwhelming.

Amazing

By Jeff

from Vandalia, Mo

This is great if you realize what it is. It is not a distortion pedal it's a tone box. It has everything from just a peppering of crunch to saturated distortion if that's your thing. If you like that saturated distortion sound then your not that interested in subtle tone and you just need to get a metal distortion pedal. If you want to have a wide range then get this pedal.

Some cool tones in there...

By mike

from severna park, md

Just picked up one of these after trying it out at GC. First impressions are fairly good. There is a wide range of gain on this pedal but I've found that most of the usable tones are in the first more classic rock range. I tried using the higher gain settings through the effects loop of my AC30, but they were squealing and unusable without a gate. For a bassier more american sounding alternative to the SUPER Overdrive, it rules. I'm getting great overdrive tone with the sound knob a quarter of the way up and a wider tonal range than with my super overdrive. It definitely reacts more like being plugged into an old school tube amp with the power section a full blast. All and all, this is a great pedal for Classic/Indie rockers. Metal Heads, go get that new Metal Core instead.

Great flexibility Fantastic harmonic possibilities

By BB

from San Jose, CA

Tone it down to a bluesy crunch or push it up and it can squeal with overlapping harmonics and growling noises, very nice complex sounds that respond with picking intensity very fun. I like that it has more bass than a pure metal pedal, but very capable of grinding up and shredding tin cans with the tone controls. really great pedal.
