Just What I Needed!

By jjthechemist

from Valdosta, GA

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

I love this pedal. I have personally tried a huge number of overdrives, from very inexpensive to some of the best out there. I have tested out models made by Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Bixonic, Digitech, and Boss. The list goes on and on. Out of all of these pedals, I have found that the OD-3 is the best pedal for the price. In my opinion, this pedal outperforms even some of the more expensive, ?boutique? effects out there. I play a 1980?s era Fender Telecaster and I have always struggled to get just the right sound out of it. I love the single coil jangle and ring, but I could never find the right distortion sound for it. Fuzz boxes sounded muddy and modern distortion boxes sounded too high and nasal. I found that a combination of a few effects and my old Fender Princeton reverb amp gave a great sound, but I was unable to capture the sound that I wanted when running direct through a sound system. Thus began my search for the perfect overdrive pedal. After several months and many, MANY guitar shops, I found the OD-3. The controls are simple ? tone, level, and gain. The pedal gives a nice, warm overdriven sound and makes my Tele sound incredibly full. I run this pedal along with a Fulltone Ultimate Octave pedal (with the distortion rolled almost back to zero) and an EQ and I can get ridiculous sustain with beautiful, warm distortion. The OD-3 is also very transparent in its reproduction of my playing style and technique, which is incredibly important to me. I play a mix of blues, rock, and jazz, and I am able to get pretty much any overdrive sound that I want from slightly dirty to heavy crunch. If you are looking for an overdrive and have a less than astronomical budget, you REALLY need to check out the OD-3.

Best Boss Drive Pedal!

By TheRaygun

from Reynoldsburg, OH

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

I've used pretty much every drive pedal that Boss makes, and hands down the best is the OD-3. For some reason, it doesn't get the same attention as the other pedals, but this is the one Boss pedal I always come back to. The drive is very natural sounding, like an amp just getting cranked up. There's a wide range of gain here and the pedal retains very good note clarity as the gain increases. This is the one drive pedal you need.

Great tube-y feel!

By TallDarkJon

from Brooklyn, NY

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

I received the OD-3 as part of a birthday gift along with some other gear, 12 years ago. And ever since then, my pedalboard has undergone several changes - but this is one pedal that will NEVER, EVER be taken out. It has such a great gritty bite to it without being too harsh. I usually have the drive setting anywhere between 11 to 1 o'clock for some bite to my tone. I also have a Fulltone DP-1 that I use for an extreme distortion and a Marshall Jackhammer as an alternate distortion & volume boost. But the OD-3 works great for getting some drive, when clean is just "too clean." Although anything beyond 1-2 o'clock on the drive knob doesn't amount to more drive but rather more volume and "bigness" to the sound. It is also very reactive to your amp settings, so if you like a lot of treble like I do, you'll get a brighter sound. If I ever had to choose between the 3 drive pedals I own, I would stick with the OD-3 because it would work better in any musical situation I'm in. I love that little yellow box!!!

Boss Does Good

By PrayForSurf

from Undisclosed

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

I am extreamly happy with this pedal. I needed somethign that was strong than my blues jr overdrive but with alot of variety as well. The tone knob on the OD-3 is offers quite a range of souds from a smoothe bass tone to a more pronouced high end. Does just what an OD pedal should do.

Great Overdrive Pedal

By greyhensey

from Charlotte, NC

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

The Boss Overdrive-3 is the best overdrive pedal that I have ever used with my 72'Telecaster. When I jam with it I can turn the overdrive down low for playing rhythm or turn it up for lead guitar. Overall this is definitely a great guitar pedal.

The amazing OD-3 BOSS pedal have impressed me...Versatile, Strong, Produces rich and worm sounds and can be used as a booster...! |It works properly for Blues to Rock ?n? roll and gets very dirty when used with a saturated amp! It has a great tone range and a strong overdrive sound...! It?s the solution for your set! A great overdrive I would definitely buy it again...

Perfect

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

This pedal is just what I needed to complete my sound. I play a Les Paul out of a Marshall half stack and use the tube amp's gain as my main sound. I kick this pedal and it just screams. I love this pedal.

Great Pedal

By Zc

from CA, LA

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

I've just bought this pedal, it's amazing it is one of the most versatil overdrive pedals out there. I play an american hss strat with a ma50c marshall. I have got only one problem: when you play in the 1st string (in solos, funky, ska) it gets to bright and makes like a little feedback. It depends on the setting of course.

Boss OD-3 overdrive pedal champions clean overdrive

By Gerald Founds

from Philadelphia PA USA

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

This Boss OD-3 overdrive pedal is the cousin of the original OD-1 and is a champion of clean overdrive, and original. It is like the difference of a very inexpensive set of pick ups and the most expensive due to quality. It gives you the genuine sound of what an electric guitar sounds like plugged in and driven - whether playing easy or hard. Stays right with it and does not fade out. Continual signal. Drive set all the way up does not loose the electric sound of the guitar in any disapation of tonal quality into that drowning synthezised type solid state circuitry tube driven simulation sound. It is like a true one to one overdrive clean sound representation. Best I have found. It has a wide range of sound effect and can get it up to that normal sound of a really cranked preamped tube amplifier head without total clean quality loss in distortion. A true tube amp driven clean sound. The unique Boss OD-1 was the original and at the 20th Anniversary - Boss released the OD-3. I began with the OD-1 when it came out and it is the cleanest overdrive effect I found and now continues in the OD-3 release. One of the most tonation critical electric guitars in the world being the Les Paul Custom Black Beauty Triple Pick Up - I had this combined with this Boss OD-1 overdrive pedal and older tape delay type echo and was truly state of the art sound preamped through a Peavy Backstage (three band equalizer) into the traditional Marshall Lead Amp Head (with pre-amp and Presense circuitry) - I mean sumper pumped preamplification ! Boss overdrive delivered. It is one of the cleanest replications of the electric guitar amplified and driven possible I have ever heard. Boss pedals are truly legendary ! HERE is a quoted description..... Description: "In 1977, BOSS introduced the now-legendary OD-1 -- the worldۡs first compact overdrive pedal for guitarists. The rich, warm tones that this stompbox produced immediately set it apart from the harsh distortion boxes that had come before it. On the 20th anniversary of BOSS compact pedals, we proudly introduce the OD-3 OverDrive, giving guitarists a greatly expanded range of smooth overdrive tones and improved response while staying true to the original. Best OD pedal I have tried!

By Matt Pocker

from San Jose, Ca

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

I play an Amer. Std. Strat through either a Hot Rod Dlx III or a 65 Deluxe Reverb reissue or both using an ABY pedal. This is a real simple setup which gives a true and honest sound and serves a great platform by which to judge the sounds a pedal can make. I had been using a TS-808 for years and liked it well enough but wanted to try something without the mid hump and that wouldn't kill the low end tones. Over a period of a few weeks I tried a TS9, Fulltone OCD and Plimsoul, Boss BD-2 Blues Driver, Pigtronix fat Driver, Way Huge Green Rhino, and even plunked down way more money than I wanted to on a keeley Luna OD. Without going into detail on every pedal, I found the Boss OD-3 to be the equal of or better than any of them for my tastes. In general it is really warm sounding and smooth with great sustain at moderate drive settings that didn't let the tone fade as I held on to notes. Does a great job of creating tubey overdrive tones. It also allowed bass notes to come through with good clarity without the mush of TS-808. I had read comments about Boss pedals coloring your sound but the OD-3 showed no signs of this and could work great as a clean boost by keeping the the drive low and level high. The tone control is quite sensitive and large changes can drastically alter your sound. I am really liking the tones this pedal is putting out and would highly recommend it to anyone on the hunt for a new OD pedal.

Great pedal

By Kevin Bradley

from Glen Mills, PA

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

I purchased this pedal and use it in combination with a Boss DS1 distortion and all I can say is wow! I have a Mesa Dual Rect Roadster and play mostly Les Pauls, and the OD-3 gives a great boost to the clean channels ( channels 1 and 2) on the Roadster amp, and adds even more to the to the higher gain channels (3 and 4). The Mesa amp has a solo boost feature, but I like the OD-3 even more. I added the ISP Decimator as well and all together, I am pleased. This review is supposed to be all about the OD-3, I know, but I cannot mention it alone without considering the other components. When the OD-3 is on alone, it does add a great boost especially on the cleans. I considered this together with the TS9 (un-modded version),, and for now I like the OD-3. If I got a TS9, I would get the mod.

Great overdrive pedal

By FRANKLIN FANNING

from Dayton OH

Comments about Boss OD-3 OverDrive Pedal:

Just played a week's worth of gigs. Gets a great sound for blues/rock or country rock. Play a vintage modified tele thinline through a Vox AC4...lots of fun! Easy to get a wide variety of sounds and numerous mods out there for the hobbyist. Wouldn't recommend if you're looking for a heavy metal sound.
