There's the Aquarian Regulator resonant bass drum head with the hole on the side, a version with a hole in the middle - and then a version with no port at all. I believe Aquarian also makes different size port hole versions of this head such as 5" to 7" cut holes. The first Regulator resonant head I owned was a 5" "side" ported version. I noticed a bit more low end (sub-lows, low-end rumble) and a little less attack with this head. The center ported version reacts slightly the other way (slightly less sub-low). The center ported version was my favorite do to working well with my 22"maple bass drum more to my liking. So understand that while this head comes in different port versions, "including no port at all" - there is a slight difference in sound & beater rebound caused by the location of the port from version to version. I just got tired of the same old side ported sound - and my choice ended up being a good one. The center ported version also has a larger hole - so there is less low end - but I found that the side ported versions had a bit too much rumble anyway. In my opinion the center ported version has a slight more classic sound while a tad less modern. It also is easier to add things internally like a mic or additional muffling if needed, "although I suggest no muffling at all" - especially while accompanied with a head such as the Remo Powerstroke 3 as a batter (I prefer the clear version PS3). Outstanding!!! Now the unported Regulator is interesting to. One of the great things about the unported Aquarian Regulator is not only does it sound the best out of the box (do to not having a port, making most of the resonant surface without the escaping air), if you want to - you can self port this head to your own preference. This gives you a opportunity to cut a smaller hole - which can be useful & more desirable in my opinion. For example, I would try cutting a hole a few inches from one side of the head just big enough to get away with installing your microphone of choice. If you don't plan on doing any recording though, I would strongly suggest a unported head - for this will always help deliver the most from your bass drum.
