  • Are you SERIOUS?!?!

As reviewed by A.M. Oliveras on 3/7/2011

I researched for two years before deciding on an interface. I listened to everything on the market in a similar price range that I could, and believe you me, I heard more than a few. I was worried that Apogee's entry level piece was going to punish me for not needing two to eight inputs, not to mention the built in mic I was ready to dismiss based on combination technology's track record. ( You generally get bits of both and the best of neither.) Also, given two reviewer's on this site's experience, I had just about given up on the ONE as an option. (see "fragile" and "unfortunate") I decided to call Apogee directly and to my surprise, not only did I talk to someone, but had all my concerns addressed by several nice folks who, if they were bothered by my many, many questions, showed no signs. I was assured the mic, preamps and digital conversion would be pro quality to say the least. Based on that, I took the jump. I never buy extra coverage for anything but based on "fragile", I bought it on this. Plus, the gc guy told me it now included accidents! (I'm lucky I make it out of the house in one piece sometimes.) I also bought a small single mic box...just in case. I got it home and within minutes had it installed and working with ALL of my software with no glitching or failure. (Ableton, Garage band, Studio One Pro. Hey "unfortunate- clean out your hard drive!) I compared the mic on the ONE against my Dragonfly and Trident and was flabbergasted to find that the ONE held it's own quite nicely. Using identical source material I was hard pressed to hear a huge difference between takes. I have 15 years professional voice over and production experience, and know broadcast quality when I hear it. Not wanting to be too easily convinced, I broke out the cheapest guitar I could find (unfortunately mine) and checked the sound from open E to top E harmonics. The bottom sounded clear and natural without a trace of proximity or boominess. The harmonics sounded infinite. One thing I almost forgot was to check it out on my itunes and was again blown away. I had goosebumps listening to music I've owned for 20 years. I could actually hear the difference in tape stock being used on several recordings. My old jazz stuff had a presence I've never known or heard before. (Imagine going from atari on a black and white to a PS3 in IMAX. My ONE has about 3k miles and counting on it. In a world filled with disappointment, ( Prequel Star Wars kinda sucked, Jennifer Love Hewitt has yet to make me breakfast in bed) ONE lives up to the hype.

  • Outstanding sound, treat it carefully

As reviewed by Chromatic8 on 6/23/2011

I'd wanted to have a portable music workstation on my Macbook for a few years and had resorted to bootcamping and built-in sound. Finally got fed up and bought Logic Studio, which demanded a better quality interface. After investigating many units, from ONE to RME Fireface UFX, it became clear that there's no zero compromise solution that handles both the road and the studio. Once I decided to optimize for portability now and buy a separate interface for my fixed installation, it came down to the ONE, Duet 2 and RME Babyface, largely based on low-latency performance. ONE won for portability and simplicity and I bought it a month ago. After using its built-in mic, instrument input and external mic (but not having tried phantom power), I'm extremely happy with the purchase. Playback sound quality is outstanding, even on powered desktop speakers instead of studio monitors. The recording quality is extremely clean as well so it's perfect for use as both a sketchpad and a way to capture tracks that will make the final mix. The only caution I offer is to look at its construction and realize it's not even close to indestructible - I think I could crush the front panel onto the internal circuitry with my thumb and forefinger. Carry it in a case of some sort, even inside your laptop bag, with no cables plugged in and it should last a lifetime. As a complementary piece to a larger audio interface, the ONE is an outstanding value and personally, I think every macbook owning musician should have one. As your only audio interface, I think there are too many compromises and you'd want to step up to at least a dual-channel solution, ideally with an ADAT expansion option. In short, if it meets your requirements from a feature perspective, stop analyzing and buy it - you won't have a problem from a quality perspective, audio or otherwise.

  • bad quality, bad service

As reviewed by J on 6/12/2011

The unit developed a bad hum and static that would show up in the recordings. it didn't matter if I was recording from the built in mic or either of the inputs. The unit is now useless as it happened just outside of the 1 year warranty and apogee wanted $140 to fix it, but I haven't heard back from them in months. Before it broke it was decent. Felt very light and plasticky. also felt the breakout cable connection was weak. The microphone was impressive while it lasted. overall not satisfied for $250.
