Bring your Volcas to life without breaking the bank

By Andrew

Comments about Alesis Q25 25-Key Keyboard MIDI Controller:

I have a Korg Volca Keys and a Volca Bass, both very amazing and affordable synths, but the tradeoff for compact size and low price are less-than-comfortable keyboards, so I needed something with real keys to control them, something that wasn't more expensive than the instruments themselves. Searched around and this one fits the bill. It plugs right into the MIDI in port of the Volcas and also works with my Arturia Microbrute. Just plug it in and instantly you;re in business, no fiddling with anything, so software to install. The software it is bundled with looks interesting, too, but I'm a hardware/analog-oriented person so although I can verify that it works fine I can't much comment on it. But I paid 60 bucks for this on sale so the software is just a bonus for me. The unit is made of durable plastic and pretty lightweight and compact. The keys are full size but don't have the best action; however they sure beat the ribbon boards on the Volcas and they are velocity-sensitive as well. Makes my little Volcas a pleasure to play.

Solid and functional

Comments about Alesis Q25 25-Key Keyboard MIDI Controller:

I got this controller listening to the advice of one of the gents in the keyboard section at the Pasadena Guitar Center who pointed out a unit I was looking at had a flimsy internal usb port and keys were almost casio-like. That unit was tempting because it had pads on it, but I decided to go with the Q25 strictly due to the keys, not a sample person by heart I figured if I wanted to slap down a drum track, these keys were sturdy enough to handle it. It's been fun so far. I've yet to fool with the midi select options but it's definitely a good buy.

Comments about Alesis Q25 25-Key Keyboard MIDI Controller:

The reason I like this so much is that it has full sized keys while still being compact. I also love that it is simple to use and sturdy. It is a quality product for someone who is not a keyboardist first.

For price, very good

Comments about Alesis Q25 25-Key Keyboard MIDI Controller:

Bought it about two weeks ago... use it with Reason 5 on my laptop, and what else could I ask for? No it's not like my AKAI MPK49, but for what it is, I have no real complaints.. of course there are only 25 keys, which feel very light.. it is responsive, but to record true dynamics, you would want a controller with better keys... all in all, if you know what you're buying, you shall not be disappointed.

Great no-nonsense midi controller. Build quality is OK.

Comments about Alesis Q25 25-Key Keyboard MIDI Controller:

Prior to buying this I was using a first generation M-Audio Axiom 61 controller. I travel quite a bit now and wanted a portable 25 note controller. I considered the newer Axiom Pro 25, but I realized that I don't use the knobs and other midi controls on my Axiom 61, so I opted for the Alesis Q25 because it simple, straight forward, and very compact since it doesn't have several knobs or sliders, just a conservative number of controls on the left of the unit. Overall it's a great controller. It supports Aftertouch using the Data Entry slider, which is is actually kind of cool, different, and maybe a little experimental since most people expect Aftertouch on the keys rather than a slider. The only issue I ran into is the first C# and second D# keys were getting stuck and the note wouldn't always release. Maybe it was a fluke with my unit. Since this is a relatively cheap controller and easy to take apart, plus I'm somewhat competent in my technical skills, I just popped the top and tightened some screws and now it's fine. Despite my minor quirk with the keys, I think this is the way a 25 key controller should be made. No nonsense, no BS, no wasted desk space for a keyboard that has knobs you will never use. It's also very light weight which is great for traveling. I'm quite sure I only paid $79 for this at my local Guitar Center. At the time I am writing this the price online is $99.
