The AKG C 414 XL II condenser microphone is the successor to the famous AKG C 414 B-TL II mic. The AKG C 414 XL II mic shows the unique sonic signature of the highly sought after AKG C 12 which enables lead vocals and solo instruments to be placed even in a dense mix. The unrivaled up-front sound is also well-known for distant miking applications like classic music recording or drum ambience miking.

The XL II mic version differs from the XLS version in one major respect-the capsule. Both the slight presence boost and the impressive spatial reproduction is similar to the legendary AKG C 12 microphones.

The AKG C 414 XL II offers 9 pickup patterns for you to choose the perfect setting for every application. For live-sound applications and permanent installations, all controls can be disabled easily enabling trouble-free use. A Peak-Hold LED displays even shortest overload peaks.

AKG Acoustics warrants AKG products against defects in material or workmanship for a period of two years from the date of original purchase, and agrees to repair or, at our option replace any defective unit without charge for either parts or labor. AKG grants a three-year warranty covering selected products (C 12 VR, C 414 B-ULS, C 414 B-TLII, C 414 B-XLS, C 414 B-XLII, C 426 B, C 451 B, C 480 B, C 391 B, C 1000 B, C 2000 S, C 3000 B, C 4000 B, C 4500 B, SolidTube) against defects in material and workmanship.

Warranty is valid for AKG products purchased and delivered within the United States for the original purchaser only. The purchaser's Bill of Sale will serve as proof of sale and warranty validity in the U.S. Shipment of defective items to AKG for repair will be at the customer's own risk and expense. AKG will assume the return shipping cost for all items repaired under warranty.

IMPORTANT: This warranty does not cover damage resulting from accident, misuse or abuse, lack of reasonable care, the affixing of any attachment not provided with the product, loss of parts, or connecting the product to any receptacle other than specified.

This warranty is void unless AKG Acoustics, U.S.'s service center performs the repair. No responsibility is assumed for any special, incidental or consequential damages caused by the consumer. However, the limitation of any right or remedy shall not be effective where law prohibits such.

There are good things and bad things about the original 414's. The good things are this: they have a very even signal response; and you can place them far away from the source and *still* get that even signal response. That even response is a pretty amazing feat for any microphone. 414's are great when set way back like in a mid/side pair for room mic's, for example. The bad thing though is that, in spite of the even response, there is a harshness in the high end, which gets in the way of capturing a more dynamic, ensemble performance. (Like, these aren't the best general room mic's.) I was hoping that, because AKG says these are more like if the 414 had a baby with a C12 -- one of the cleanest mic's ever made -- that they'd lose that harshness. But they sound almost exactly the same as the old 414! They just look fancier.

I am tempted to rate this lower than three stars because I don't like the way it sounds... The only thing stopping me is that I know it's a classic mic and I've heard it sound especially good on one person's voice. If you have a bunch of mics already and just want to broaden your palate, I can comfortably say this is a decent mic to pick up. But if you are looking for one great vocal mic, or even a pair of overheads for drums, I would go a different direction. I have used the AKG 414 as a vocal mic and a pair of them as overheads. On vocals, they lack some sparkle on top. Similarly, when putting them on overheads, it just doesn't impress me. As far as overheads are concerned, I've moved to a pair of Shure Beta 57As and that sounds great. Those also sound good on vocals, which is what they were designed for, I think. They're only $500 for a pair.

Industry Workhorse Earns its Reputation Honestly

I bough this mic about a year ago, and can say with all honesty, it has been a standout performer for anything I have put it use on. For acoustic guitar it's clarity, and definition are amazing. You can hear every detail, and yet it is not harsh in any way. The numerous polar patterns allow you to taler the function to suit your needs with no loss of quality or spaciousness. With a good preamp it has a wonderful airy sound much like a u87 or Manley, and it is simply excellent for vocals. Male or female vocals really pop though this, but it DOES require your performance to be spot on. If you are slightly off it will pick it up! It is useful for just about anything in the studio you can think of, including picking up cymbals from overhead. It is one of the best Microphones I own, and I would put it up against the Neumann TLM103 or the Sterling Audio Ocean Way Signature Series mic, as well as the Neumann KMS104. It blows RODE, Sputnik, or lower level Sterlings out of the water. I own or have used in my studio all these mics, so can speak to it with absolute authority. It is durable, rugged, and has launched the careers of many a fabled performer, and for my money is one of the best values going. DO get a top quality heavy stand for use with this Mic. It does pick up whatever is going on in the environment, and mic stand noise can be maddening. I use the ultimate support boom, which retails for $199, and has a solid base, super thick pole and overhead boom.

WOW...Bright...

Well, first of all Im not the guy to write reviews...first of all... so with that Im telling you I ve worked with several major producers and artists in major studios they have this mic and the U-87, if u dont have 3 G's for a mic this will defenetly do if you dont have this much for a mic then get the MXL and be unsatisfied...

Accurate sound, highest quality mic with great features

This mic provides a top-notch frequency response curve and great sensitivity. It really captures your original source and makes it come alive. This mic is best used for quieter �ۡ����acoustic�ۡ��� sources, e.g. acoustic guitar, voice, strings and wind instruments. It will capture all the details and nuances of these sources. The user manual contains some good guidelines for using the mic with a lot of different sources. This mic also features some sophisticated electronics. You can choose from nine different pick-up patterns, four different attenuation settings, and four different bass-cut settings. The carrying case, pop filter, and shock-mount are all excellent quality. It�ۡ���s so nice to buy a piece of equipment and get some really high quality useful accessories. If you�ۡ���re doing voice recording, definitely use the pop filter. They also test every mic and provide you with the actual frequency response of YOUR individual mic! If you are doing stereo recording and you want the best results, you can even buy a �ۡ����matched pair�ۡ���. They compare the frequency responses and put two mics in the same case that have nearly identical frequency response. If you are looking to mic a guitar amp, you may want to look elsewhere. In fact, I�ۡ���ve read that you could even damage this mic if it is too close to a loud amp. The sound pressure from a loud amp could make the diaphragm less sensitive. An SM-57 or other dynamic mic would be a better choice for mic�ۡ���ing an amp. This mic is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. This is a top-quality mic used by professionals all over the world. It is the current evolution of a design going back decades. If you need your sound to be as accurate as possible, this mic is for you.

I don't own this mic but we use it at my church we have choir risers that go 12feet deep 5 feet high and you can here the person in the back just as well as the person in the front.. everything's level and balanced.. a little price for some but totally worth it

Great All Around

This mic is a great all around mic with switchable polar patterns which always comes in handy. they sound great as drum overheads, and drum room mics. They always are good with acoustic guitars as well. Stereo pairs are affordable, and reliable. A great standard in the recording world.

Real Precision

I have been a professional recording engineer for over fifteen years and in every world class studio that I have utilized, undoubtably the AKG 414 series mic has been readily available to me. Able to capture real sound quality with amazing clarity, I can't think of anything I could not use this mic for. Vocals, instruments, percussions, field sound, etc. The AKG C 414 XL II follows suit. In tradition with setting new standards for excellence, the C 414 XL II will not let you down.

The AKG 414 is my choice foe so many applications. I would put it in the same class as a U87. Great for vocals, acoustic guitar, strings etc. I have used the 414 since the 1980's. You will love it!

Great bass response

Any good engineer familiar with the 414 will tell you that along with being crystal clear and crisp, it also has great bass response. If bass is what you need to hear in what you are recording, this is the mic to consider. And as it is superb for vocals as well as instruments, that makes it very versatile, which saves you money if your studio can't afford many mics. Just make sure to remember the pop filter! ;)
