If there were only one guitar I could grab if the house was on fire it would be my FGX700SC. It has a very bright sound like the Taylor 100 series but with better sounding electronics. The finish is good but not perfect. A little more clear coat in the cracks than an expensive guitar would have but what do you expect for a cheap one. The tuner is dead on with my Snark and allows fast alternate tuning without a head stock tuner. The set-up was great right out of the box with a brighter sound than a FGX730SC. Excellent playability with very little fret buzz. I am missing fewer notes with less effort. I detuned 4 steps to try it out as a barritone and it has excellent tone and playability. Played acoustically it has great tone but amplified is where the 3 band equalizer really shines. The only down side is the frets are a little high when sliding on the strings but that is going to get corrected real soon with a fresh set-up. This will allow any beginner to play a great sounding instrument. I still love a Fender, Martin, or a Taylor but this is a great buy if you are on a tight budget. This is going to become my travel guitar because of it's size and weight. The body is a little larger than a standard dreadnaught so standard dread cases didn't fit. I had to use a gig bag for the case. This is an excellent value. You could buy one for each tuning at the price.

The biggest problem with this guitar is its tuners. They slip and cannot keep tune. I tightened the screws at the ends of the stems very tight, but they still slip. Also, the action on the guitar is rather high. I find the neck to be too narrow for my fingers. I would have preferred that a strap button be located at the base of the neck. On the plus side, the sound is decent. The electronics are good, and the built-in tuner is handy, but not as precise as a Snark.

Great Guitar

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I just purchased this guitar and am very happy with it! The action on the strings is crazy and it sounds beautiful! I plugged it into a Marshal amp and made all the settings flat and was surprised at how clean and clear the sound was. Great guitar, must buy if looking for one under $500!

Great guitar !!!

By

from Lewisville, TX

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This is a very nice guitar! It was setup just fine right out of the box, plays very well, low enough action, easy to play, and sounds great. Hook it up to an amp, and it sounds even better! I have it going to a Kustom KAA30 acoustic guitar amp (comparable to a Kustom Sienna 30). The built-in tuner was actually a nice surprise. Wish they had it in Sandburst/Sunburst (out of stock local), but the Natural is still beautiful. This guitar is definitely a great buy! No it's not a $1000 guitar, but hey, with the money I saved I got an Epiphone Les Paul 100 to sit next to it, along with an iRig HD to hook into my Mac and iPhone!

Excellent Guitar

By

from Phoenix, AZ

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I sampled several acoustic guitars in GC's acoustic room. I was looking for an electric acoustic. Of all of the guitars I sampled, including some of the higher-end name brand ones, this model had more depth to the sound. Most of the others sounded a bit dull. I've had this guitar for well over a year now and I love it. The internal electric pickup processes the string sounds loud and clear. I also own 2 Yamaha keyboards - one of which I've had for 23 years. Yamaha is a name I've come to trust for high quality budget-friendly musical instruments.

Playability, features, and value!

By

from Plantsville, CT

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've mainly been an electric guy, but I got the itch for the acoustic tone. I spent a few hours for several days straight in Guitar Center trying out more than half the acoustic electric guitars in the $500 and under section until I chose this one. It just had that "it" tone that stood out against the others I played and physically it felt great in my small man hands. It included the features (solid top, cutaway design, built in tuner). I was also pleasantly surprised when I saw it wasn't nearly the most expensive guitar in my price range. This guitar also sounded beautiful through the acoustic amp I tried it with(~$200, can't recall the model name). Action out of the box was higher than I'm used to but it's not bad and for those that play standing it doesn't have a strap button near the bottom of the neck, but you could always add one. Very pleased with my purchase and would recommend to beginners+.

A Matter of Taste

By

from Lancaster NY

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

There is quite a selection of acoustic-electrics out there. I shopped in the $300 range (my budget) for as many similar guitars as I could find. I made my list and headed for Guitar Center. After comparing several, I decided it was a toss up between the Yamaha and the Fender T-Bucket. The deciding factor was the unplugged sound. The Yamaha was a bit mellower whereas the Fender had a decidedly bright sound. I also liked the satin finished neck on the Yamaha as opposed to the gloss finished neck of the fender. I only rated this guitar 4 stars because it lacked a strap button at the base of the neck. The fender had one.

Great Inexpensive Guitar!

By

from Winston-Salem, NC

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was in need of a new, inexpensive acoustic/electric and I read reviews of a few different ones online, including this Yamaha. It got generally good reviews so I decided to play one at my local Guitar Center and all I can say is WOW! For a guitar in the under $300 price range you can't beat the Yamaha FGX700SC. The guitar plays great, really nice action. It was setup wonderfully right out of the box. The intonation was right on and it stays in tune like a champ, contrary to a couple other reviews I read. The neck has a nice feel to it. I believe it is considered a shallow C profile neck. I have fairly large hands and it feels really good to me. The fingerboard is finished quite nicely, including the degree to which the rosewood has been finished as well as the dressing of the frets. No sharp edges as you run your hand up and down the side of the fingerboard. The mahogany body is finished very well and, get this, YOU GET A SOLID TOP!! Again, something you just don't see everyday in this price range. The sound is big and warm. I can't speak about the electronics yet as I haven't amplified it yet but, the onboard tuner is a nice little feature. To sum it up, great neck and board feel, solid top, and big dreadnought sound and all of it for under $300! BY THIS GUITAR!

A joy to play.

By

from Austin, TX

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I love to play guitar and I needed an acoustic guitar so I could play at night when the rest of my family was asleep. I tried most of the guitars priced less than $400 and this Yamaha FGX700SC was the winner. I like the sound without an amp. Unamplified sound was my first criteria in picking a guitar so I could play anytime. Having said that, it sounds great plugged in to an amp as well. I have had it for a month and a half now and I love playing this thing. It stays in tune and I like the convenience of the built in tuner. It is a great guitar to pick up and play when I get a spare moment. No amp settings... Nothing to plug in... Just pick it up and get after it. Go try one and I bet you will like it too.

Awesome Guitar for the Price and Quality

By

from California

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar looks and sounds great! The nato wood may be a cheaper wood used in lower end guitars but you can't tell any difference in sound quality. This guitar has a great resonance (not to low or high pitched) and it is loud enough to fill your room. The tuner works great and is pretty precise. The neck is very easy to play on and the action is incredible for the price. I did have a little buzzing but had my bro play with the nut and it went away in 1 min. Easy fix and this guitar sounds awesome! I actually want to play more now that i have a great sound and a great feel. Also comparing to the Mitchell MD100SCE - The mitchell has a lower sound resonance but this yamaha has a better evened low and bright resonance (if that makes sense). The tuner and electronics also look prob sound better. Overall GREAT cheap costing guitar.

2nd time around

By

from Temecula, California

Comments about Yamaha FGX700SC Solid Top Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I loved the FG700 so much, I bought this guitar. They are the same but for the electronics. Both have a bright sound that projects well even when not amplified. The FGX700SC's electronics let me deepen that sound when plugged in. The tuners are average. The Frets are level, but I note (as with the first guitar) it plays better if you take the time to sand the saddle down so that the Big E string is 6mm and the small e string is 4.1 mm measured at the 12th fret. I've also replaced the nut and saddle with TUSQ parts, and that makes it sound warmer with better sustain. Both TUSQ parts are cheap and well worth it. I've played Taylor's that cost twice as much that sound about the same. Would I recommend this to a friend? Yes, and I often do. pros: bright clear sound, good electronics. cons: needs nut/saddle upgrade NB: you will love any guitar more if you spend time working on it.
