The TASCAM DR-40 has adjustable mics, four-track recording and extended battery life, to give you the flexibility you need to record tracks anywhere.
The DR-40 captures up to four tracks from built-in, high-quality condenser microphones, XLR mic or line inputs. The internal mics are adjustable from XY to AB position, helping you to tailor your recording to the sound of the room. A pair of great-sounding TASCAM microphone preamps welcome condenser microphones with phantom power, recording at up to 96kHz/24-bit resolution. It accommodates balanced XLR or 1/4" line inputs using locking Neutrik Combo jacks. The DR-40 accepts SD or SDHC cards up to 32GB, and a 2GB card is included.
Once recorded, play back your takes with EQ and the optional Level Align feature to avoid volume jumps. A stereo reverb effect is also built-in, as well as a speaker and chromatic tuner. Transfer recordings to computer using the USB 2.0 jack. Other features include overdub mode, variable speed playback, limiting and low cut filter, and much more – all with TASCAM’s simple-to-use interface. Home or live recording is as simple as it gets with the TASCAM DR-40.

I bought this recorder for a couple of reasons. I wanted a high quality recorder for my kids' band concerts, as well as a recorder capable of being connected to my mixer, for some home recording. I got my first chance to record a band concert this weekend, and the detail of the recording is excellent. The noise floor is quite low. It's quite easy to use, and the playback through headphones is very good, too. Sure, the built-in speaker is small, but no one is going to buy this as a music player.
If you're looking for a quality field recorder, you can't go wrong with the DR-40.
I bought this unit to record our band's rehearsals. I didnt even read the manual and within 5 minutes I was up and running. I just set the recorder on a music stand in the middle of the practice room, guessed at which level to set it at, and hit record! Just using the built in microphones on the unit we were blown away at how good this thing sounds - truly amazing. I cant wait to try it with a couple of Shure Sm-57s. This unit is also extremely easy to connect to your computer and download files into Itunes. Just connect the USB to your computer, click on "storage" on the the DR-40 screen, then click on the DR-40 Icon that appears on your computer and voila theres all your files waiting to be dragged into Itunes. Battery life seems to be good too - I basically left it running for 3 hours straight recording with no problems. This unit has many more features that I havent had a chance to explore yet - but I can tell you from my preliminary experience this machine is incredible!
We've used our DR-40 in noisy clubs, on the road, and for interviews. This device is versatile, company, feature-rich, and just incredible. We usually shoot video with our DSLR camera, and run audio from the DR-40 and sync it up afterward. Phantom power, nice little on screen mixer, low cuts, etc. Just so many features in such a tiny package!
