I LOVE this thing!

I have only had it for a week, but so far it has been exactly what I was looking for. I have recorded using Audacity on my computer, but found it complicated and unsatisfactory, so I stopped using it. The DP-008 is easy to set up and start recording. There is a quick-start section in the manual which had me up and running in minutes. There are a lot of settings with which I haven't experimented yet, but I have recorded a few rhythm tracks so I can practice lead over. I can keep the leads I like and re-do the ones that didn't quite work. The playback quality is just fine to my ears. You will need headphones. The unit feels like a quality piece of electronics, the knobs don't feel cheap and the menus are logical. And it is easily portable, although a quality padded carrying case would be a nice addition. I bought the A/C adapter, but I haven't used it yet.

Not child's play at all

One of the earlier reviewer's said this was so easy a child could use it. Not so at all for a middle aged novice in digital music production. I bought this because it was a digital version of a 4 track cassette recorder, which I am familiar with, so I thought it would be easy to use. The buttons are all laid out like a mixer, so the visual part is easy to read. . With some slogging through the manual, I was able to make a decent three track recording using a keyboard drum machine, and two guitars. However, the digital set up on this thing was done by an engineer whose first language is not English, not an American musician, so the arrangement of things and the names of the labels are all strange. There is a lot of deep diving in the menus to get anything done. It is not at all intuitive. There were steps left out or not explained clearly in the manual. With practice you can get used to the interface. It works well though and the sound quality is very good. I got this recorder because I found GarageBand to be overwhelming without any instruction. But the setup on this has made me go back to GarageBand, which I have now found a video series on. I think the time is better spent on GarageBand. I've ordered some iRig gear. I will probably sell the Tascam.

Simple to operate. Have to be signal conscious as 16 bit doesn't give alot of headroom but you should be cognizant of signal anyway. I like the XLR ins better than the1/4 ts for noise control. Get the adapter as batteries will go fast. Use a mixer and mix down to another recorder

I have used the built in mics and also plugged a bass into this thing with good results, the built in mics are amazing. If you want a simple recorder that makes noise free demos this will do it.

  • Good value, compact size, big on features, easy to use

This is now my go to home studio recorder/mixer. Love the easy to use features. Took about an hour or so with the manual to start recording tracks, mixing down and cutting a master. Super compact unit is a big plus and a small minus - I'm constantly finding myself being overly cautious when carrying the unit so I don't drop it. It feels like one trip to the floor and it might cause permanent damage. I'm thinking about finding some sort of padded carrying case. The unit takes 4 AA batts which don't last all that long, maybe 2 - 3 hours if constant use. I highly recommend getting the AC power adapter. Overall, this unit is packed with the features you'd want for the average home studio user and a good value.

I use this recorder for sketching out tunes or just recording when I am doodling to capture new ideas. I have also used it for serious work and then copying the track another 32 track Tascam when building a new arrangement. Very useful machine that runs on batteries or an external optional power supply. Great for taking on the road or just going to your favorite spot to lay down some tracks. Sounds very good and you can crank out a good demo with the tools that are available with the recorder.

  • This is an amazing recorder.

Can I plug in four mics (two with phantom power an two battery operated) an record them simultaneously?

    Open Reply -
You could if two of the mics have an XLR cable going into the 1/4" inputs. They would have to be the non-phantom powered mics
    Open Reply - Gear-Head
The two XLR inputs have phantom power, so yes.
