One of the best all-time dynamic vocal mics - used on Michael Jackson's Thriller album

The flat, 50Hz-20kHz frequency response of the Shure SM7B Microphone with Switchable Response is designed especially for spoken word, but recording engineers have discovered that it's also an exceptional mic for adding body to thin vocals and handling loud rock/metal singers. It also has the ability to tame harsh or sibilant sounds from hi-hat, cymbals, and voice. Highly shielded against electrical interference. Bass roll-off and mid-range emphasis (presence boost) controls with graphic display. Internal "air suspension" shock isolation. Ships with standard windscreen and an A7WS detachable windscreen for close-talk applications.

Forget the specs! This is the vocal mic that Bruce Swedien used to record Michael Jackson's vocals on Thriller, the best-selling album of all time.

Application note: The SM7B is a low output mic, so plugging direct into an audio interface may not offer enough gain. In such a case you need a preamp with a decent amount of gain. Due to its smooth sound and thickening characteristics, a transparent-sounding preamp will be a preferred choice. (See our Preamp Buying Guide for a thorough discussion of transparent vs. color preamps.)

Quality, quality, quality

well built. Just all and all a terrific addition to the studio. Excellent vocal mic. Thick, warm tone without the high end harshness and sibliance of simialriy priced condesor mics. Outperforms any mic under 1,000 that i have heard at least on vocals. Its just a quality buy. comes with switchable eq but i never use them, i tend to record flat to me it sound best. Takes eq well. I really have nothing bad to say about it. The only negative i would associate with it is that it may be too dark for some. Ur not going to get that mariah carey airy silkyness thing going with this mic. This mic was made for rappers and rock stars who need that in ur face sound with a big bottom.. I recommend this mic to anyone who is serious about recording. Honestly probably the best mic to price value in pro audio.Period.

SM7B rock mic arsenal

Huge Diaphram, stealth grayish black paint, and cool cool cool microphone adjusting bracket mount. Nothing cheap here...... SM7B is the mic that restored my sense of control over vocal recordings which simply ran out of control with overly sensitive, siblant and way too loud Condensors. Of which, tend to overload most pro mic preamps at the inputs with their ridiculous dynamic ranges (increased noise floors too). This Shure Microphone does for rock voice what the Lengendary SM57 does for electric guitar cabs and drums. Just simply tames them, and beautifully captures material into rich detailed audio for your recorders or live sound reinforcements. SPL handling is second to none, If you are LUCKY ENOUGH to get an SM7B, A/B it against any top pro condensor out there for rock or gritty male vocal applications. You will be suprised like I was that the expensive boutique microphones thousands and thousands dollars more, go right back where you got them, in the mic closet. I definately swear by this microphone. Go Shure, you won't go wrong. Compared this to Nuemanns, AKG 414's, Blue, and Audio Technica's - Shure hands down winner for heavy or acoustically gritty vocal scenarios.

The SM7B is a great mic

I just bought my 2nd SM7B last week for the podcast shows I'm doing. These work great for recording. They are shielded, so it blocks out any noise from computers, lights, etc. which works out great for my home studio. What I also like is you need a ton of gain to get the levels up, which means the mic doesn't pick up everything in the room when recording, just your voice. My condenser mics would pick up computer noise as well as any fans I had going. The SM7B doesn't pick up any of that noise and comes in crystal clear.

Shure SM7B

I got this mic for some recording projects I was doing with a few metal bands because I heard that it was good on vocals. They weren't kidding. Needs no eq at all if the vocalist is whithin a foot and the presence and bass cut are engaged. Very warm and great midrange. I ended up using this for a lot of tracks, which I didn't expect. It sounded awesome on the kick and easily competes with my favorite kick mic, AKG D112. I set up two mics on the guitar amps, an SM57 and an SM7B, and the side by side comparisons were incredible. The SM7B sounds like an SM57 but just with more balls. Very thick tone from the amp. I could go on and on, but I've found that there hasn't been one sound source that I've tried that I didn't love the recorded sound from this mic, and I've tried it on everything from bass cabs to hi hats. Great value.
