Sennheiser: MD409 vs e609

Description
The Sennheiser e 609 Silver Dynamic Guitar Microphone is designed for close-miking guitar cabinets. The supercardioid e 609 Silver lets you get right up on your amp without feedback. This rugged mic handles high sound pressure levels without distortion for clear, powerful tone.
Super-Cardioid Pattern Isolates Your Sound
The e 609 Silver's super-cardioid pickup pattern provides focused sensitivity directly in front of the mic while reducing pickup of sounds from the sides and rear. This makes it easy to achieve excellent isolation of your guitar cabinet on stage or in the studio.
Neodymium Magnet Delivers Wide Frequency Response
At the heart of the e 609 Silver is a neodymium ferrous magnet and lightweight voice coil that provide a wide 50Hz to 15kHz frequency response. This extended high-end response captures all the detail and harmonic richness of your guitar tone. The rigid dome diaphragm is built to last through years of high-volume performance.
Optimized for Close-Miking
With its flat-profile capsule, the e 609 Silver is optimized for close-miking applications like guitar cabinets, drums and brass instruments. It can be placed just millimeters from the sound source without compromising audio quality. An integral hum-compensating coil helps reduce unwanted electrical interference even in high-volume stage environments.
Road-Ready and Built to Last
Encased in a durable metal housing, the e 609 Silver is built to withstand the rigors of live performance and touring. It operates on standard 48V phantom power and includes a microphone clip and storage pouch. Capture your true tone with this high-performance, feedback-resistant mic.

Not for me
First off, this mic has a great design. I love the look and vibe of it. However, the sound is just not for me. I was looking to pair something up with my modified SM57, the E609 is in my price range, and I adore Sennheiser headphones as they have a very accurate midrange. I thought this mic was sure to be a winner. When I got it home, and started laying down some tracks to compare it to my mod SM57, the 57 was fatter & warmer. The E609 has this airy top end that I just could not get used to, especially on distorted guitars. It made it difficult to fit it into a mix as the top end occupied some of the cymbal space. I ended up having to roll off top end, and I would rather not EQ electric guitars. I am sure the mic would be awesome for Snare and Toms, but I've already got my favorites for those. I tried to get into the E609 for a couple of weeks, but ended up returning it for a different mic.

I have several Sennheiser mics including 945 vocal mics, 609 for guitar cabs or drums and a 906 that I use for bass cabinets or recently mic'd a cello at a wedding. So when I saw Guitar Center had the 609 on sale I quickly grabbed one! Its always a win to get a great quality mic for a great price and Guitar Center made it happen!!

Bought this by recommendation from a buddy- I only had a SM57 prior- but when I added this to my amp for tracking- I could get the low end on the track that the mid forward 57 lacked. Well built- hangs right against the grill- captures splendidly!

Very light and smaller than I thought. Sounds clear with a pleasant silky sound allowing great bandwidth for guitar. I will try this on snare as well.

This is the standard for micing guitar cabinets. Can drape over amps without having to use a stand which helps in tight setups. Little to no eq required.

This is a good alternative to a sm57. Not better or worse, just different.

Would this mic sound good as a room mic for my drums in my studio? I'm seeking to expand my studio arsenal and I came upon this mic and I was wondering would it work wonders outside of just recording guitars!
This is specifically made for to mike guitar amps. Not drums
