    Glossary
    Nominal impedance
    See impedance.
    Contact pressure
The wearing comfort of a set of headphones is determined not only by its weight but also by the force with which the earpieces are pressed onto the ears. This force is given in newtons (N), whereby 1 N corresponds to the compressive force which a mass of about 100 g exerts on a solid surface. The DIN Standard 45500 Part 10 limits the maximum permissible contact force to 5 N. Values of between 1.3 and 4 N are common, although lower values apply for open headphones. Higher values can be found in the case of closed headphones. Here, a higher contact pressure is required in order to achieve sufficient sealing, which is important for the reproduction of low frequencies.
    Weight w/o cable
    Jack plug
A common audio connector in consumer electronics and music industry. Available in various diameters; in the hi-fi segment, 1/8" and 1/4" are widely used. Poles range from one to four. (Examples: headphone jack or jack of an electric guitar).
    Transducer principle (Headphones)
    Ear coupling
A distinction is made between headphones which are worn on the external ear (supra-aural) and those which surround the ear (circumaural). Open headphones have foam ear pads that rest on the ears or ring pads that surround the ears. Closed headphones, on the other hand, nearly always have circumaural ear pads.
    Cable length
The cable length is usually measured between the anti-kink sleeves of the cable (cable length without connectors).
    Frequency response (headphones)
The frequency response of a pair of headphones is given within limits defined by the manufacturer.
    Sound pressure level (SPL)
Due to the impractical numerical values, the sound pressure is usually given as the logarithmic value of the sound pressure level according to the equation: dB SPL = 20 x log (po / 0.00002 Pa). The abbreviation SPL (sound pressure level) is added in order to make a clear distinction from other uses of dB. The reference sound pressure, which is at the same time the threshold of hearing, is then 0 dB SPL. The threshold of pain is 140 dB SPL. A difference in the sound pressure level of 1 dB is just about perceptible, while a doubling of the sound pressure corresponds to 6 dB and a doubling of the volume corresponds to a rise of 10 dB.
    THD, total harmonic distortion
Total harmonic distortion is a measure of non-linear harmonic distortion and is given in %. Non-linear harmonic distortions are signals which were not present in the original before the signal was converted by the headphones. These unwanted signals are caused by the diaphragm, whose movements do not precisely move in time with the electric signals that cause it to move. Unfortunately, this is a feature of all electroacoustic transducers. Although it cannot be completely eliminated, suitable steps can be taken to minimise it. However, the user is not interested in why this distortion takes place but in how great the level of distortion must be for it to become perceptible. According to the findings of several research projects, a total harmonic distortion of 1% in the frequency range of 100 to 2000 Hz is imperceptible. Below 100 Hz, the perceptibility threshold lies at 10%

  • The world is a better place...

As reviewed by M. Jin on 8/15/2011

So I had been mulling over these headphones for a while. Until I purchased the HD650's my primary headphones had been Audio Technica ATH-M50's. While I was pretty satisfied with those, I felt a desire to purchase a good pair of open headphones for longer listening sessions, reference, and general use outside of tracking. After spending some time with these headphones, I can definitely say that the world just seems like a better place when I have them on. I'll try to give a few of my honest impressions of them, but I will emphasize that no matter how much you read or how much research you do, there's really nothing that can fully describe how any piece of gear sounds until you try it out yourself. I encourage people to take the leap of faith once in a while, especially with the security of Guitar Center's no-hassle return policy. Features: It's a headphone... It's got two earpads, an adjustable band connecting them, detachable cables, etc. Really, just look at the pictures. Quality & Reliability: While I haven't had the product long enough to speak to the long-term durability of the headphones, I can definitely say that the quality is absolutely top notch. There's a real openness to the sound that you'll only get from open headphones and I've found the HD650's to really excel in terms of providing clarity and separation in the music I listen to. I will admit that I expected them to sound a little more clinical from much of what I read, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they do have a warmth and punch that really allow you to feel the music (for lack of a better term). One could argue about how that would affect the suitability of the HD650's for mixing and reference, but as far as headphones go, I think they are balanced enough in their sound to be useful. You just need to keep in mind how the sound you hear in your headphones translates to other systems, which is something you would really have to do regardless. As long as you can make those adjustments I think in most cases, you should be fine. Look & Feel: Once again, pictures would describe how the headphones look much better than any of my words will. Each person is going to have their own opinion regarding this, but I personally love the way they look. As far as the feel goes, this is really where I'm slightly conflicted. On the one hand, the ear pads and overall fit are very comfortable, which makes long listening sessions no problem. The thing I'm really conflicted about is the weight. One of the first things many people are bound to notice when they pick up these headphones is that they are light... very light. While I can understand that the reduced weight can help make the headphones more comfortable to wear, I can't help but feel like they are incredibly flimsy and delicate, particularly for a pair of headphones at this price point. This may largely be a matter of personal preference (I prefer my equipment overall to be a bit more rugged), but I just don't feel the type of solidness in them that would scream build quality which is disappointing due to how good they actually are otherwise. Suffice to say that these headphones aren't going to be right for everyone, but the few flaws that they have are largely going to be matters of personal preference rather than anything else. If you can get over these things (and even if you can't), it can't be denied that the HD650's are absolutely amazing headphones that will likely transform the way you experience the music you listen to regardless of genre. The last thing I would like to point out is that these are pretty high impedance headphones so you're probably going to need to also get yourself a good headphone amp to drive them to their full potential. That's not a plus or a minus. It's just a reality with headphones in this class.

These are the best headphones on the market for under 1k. only thing is that they are open, but that is what makes their sound quality superb.
