  • Don't Let "Mid-Size" Designation Fool You - It's HUGE

As reviewed by Jerry on 11/18/2014

I've owned and used this case for several years and finally decided to write a review. I'm a gigging drummer. My cases get used a lot, hauled around, loaded into trucks, off of trucks, in the rain, etc. This one still looks brand new. It's a very tough case with more than enough room for any set of stands - unless you're Neil Piert. If you are Neil Piert, you might need TWO of these. My main reason for this review is to let you know that "mid-size" isn't really a fair description for this case. I'd call it "large." I typically carry a 5-piece kit with 4 cymbals to gigs and this case holds 4 large cymbal stands, my high hat stand, snare stand, 2 ride tom mounts, plus the seat for my throne. Since you can hardly find lightweight hardware any more, all of my stands are the typical heavy-weight monsters everybody uses now. Still - no problem fitting them all into this case. If I didn't throw my seat in there, I'd have room for 3-5 MORE stands. I could easily get by with a smaller version of this case if they had one. One good reason for NOT putting more stands in this case is that it gets very heavy very fast. Just the empty case has some heft to it. Throw 6-8 stands in there and you've got well over 100 lbs. to lift into your trunk. The wheels are great, but unless you drive a moving van with a ramp on it, at some point you're gonna be lifting this beast. Just keep that in mind. The plastic pull-out handle on this case seems very light-duty for such a heavy-duty case, but so far I haven't had any trouble with it. I would NEVER use the pull-out handle to lift this case, though. I suspect it would snap like a twig. It works fine for its intended purpose - rolling the case around. (I still don't extend it all the way out - just to be safe.) The lifting handles are very solid. The only down-side might be the lack of interior straps to keep stuff tied in place. So, when you load the case, you need to be conscious of which end will be "UP" when you stand it up. After you load this case, unless you're The Hulk, you're going to roll it - not carry it. When you stand it up for rolling, everything inside will slide toward the bottom end where the wheels are mounted. As long as you're aware of this when you load, it's not an issue. I wouldn't put anything fragile in this case with stands - the stands might crush or damage it moving around. The textured exterior surface makes it impossible to put stickers on this case but also hides scratches and keeps this case looking new. I myself don't find the empty case to be particularly useful on stage while I'm playing, but in the laid-down position you could easily use it as a monitor stand, place to sit, drink holder, maybe even let a guitar player use it as an amp stand. It'll support a heavy load on the outside, too. In short, I highly recommend this case - IF you need a LARGE case to move your stands around or store your gear.

  • This is THE hardware case

As reviewed by Guy on 12/19/2014

Having lugged my hardware - tomtom legs, hi-hat, pedal, throne, cymbal stands, etc. - around in everything from cardboard boxes whose bottoms fell out and old suitcases which were never big enough, this hardware case meets all my needs. It is easy to open and secure, and the extending handle and wheels make moving my hardware which probably weighs 50-60 lbs. extremely efficient. I am only rating it four stars since I only recently purchased it and haven't really field tested it much, but with its rugged construction and lifetime warranty, I don't think I have much to worry about. The same goes for the SKB cymbal vault which protects your cymbals from damage and makes them easy to roll to your gig. It is well built and holds the cymbals securely and protects them with padded spacers as well. Sure, they may be a little bit expensive, but they will last a lifetime and protect equipment that is even more expensive!
