  • Great Upgrade to SPD-S

As reviewed by DEVIN WALKER on 8/31/2012

The SPD-SX is a great upgrade from the SPD-S because I can connect it directly to my computer and program the pad accordingly. Also, there is plenty of space for me to save what I've done and backup onto a flash drive or computer is easy. This saves me so much time and preparation. This alone is worth it. I must say that the feel of the SPD-SX is not as precise as the SPD-S, however. For example, it seems as though the top pads must be hit in a certain spot in order to trigger the sound, whereas, with the SPD-S, I could hit any where on the cushion pad and will get my sound. This might be because I purchased a floor model that used as a sample in one of the stores. Overall, I love this machine. I use it to trigger in music and for percussion while using the Octapad as my drum set. I am virtually a one-man band, performing children shows. I'm able to play at shows using only the two pads, with the Roland Hi-Hat and KD-7 bass drum trigger added. I can set up in 20 minutes caring three bags (I carry my own speaker), two if a sound system is already provided. I sometimes add a real snare and a small Tom Tom, and use the triggers to connect it to the pads as well. I love it. I do believe that the price can come down a little, however, I don't see that happening because I don't recall a price drop on the SPD-S. It will take some time learning everything, but that's with anything these days. I recommend it.

  • FINALLY! a pad that does what I need it to

As reviewed by Travis Porter on 11/6/2011

This is the pad I've been waiting for.. for the last year or so I've been acting as both drummer and DJ for the hip hop project Earth Amplified, so I experimented with the original SPD-S, the SPD-30, and the Alesis Control Pad (used controlling ableton live), and have been frustrated with serious drawbacks on all of them: no sample loading on the SPD-30, memory shortage and having to use outdated flash cards to on the SPD-S, and bad phantom triggering problems on the Control Pad. I haven't been able to test it on stage yet, but after spending only about a day working with the SPD-SX, I am already so stoked to (and relieved!) that they finally made a pad with the flexibility necessary for real deal modern situations.

  • cheap junk that hypes more than it delivers...

As reviewed by Earl Brackett on 2/3/2012

I've played V-Drums for about 6+ years so I thought that anything with Roland and drum triggering would be a slam dunk...this thing is JUNK !! cheap plastic junk that was delivered with one shoulder-pad that wouldn't trigger unless I pounded it with a 2 lb. hammer in the dime sized spot. the six main pads are of good quality and trigger well, but if you are expecting the dynamics of a V-Drum then don't buy this ! They advertise 100 kits, you get 16, too lazy to load the full load...they should have done at least 50 of more thing, THIS IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH OSX 10.7 LION !! you can't use the librarian, and you can't record with it unless you run it through an audio interface. first it was the GAIA and now this, Roland is making plastic TOYZ, not musical instruments...charging $799 for what is worth about $199, I am sending this turd back and getting an Alesis MIDI Pad controller...this is a waste of money and time. they'll be on Ebay at half price in 3 months. the samples that are loaded do sound great, but it doesn't compensate for what is an overpriced and under-developed cheaply manufactured piece of gear. BEWARE !!
