Overview

When mixing music you want a pair of studio monitors that will accurately reveal the truth about what you're listening to, and the Eris series from PreSonus are designed to do just that. With its 5" Kevlar low-frequency transducer, the compact Eris E5 sports a 45W, Class AB amplifier; and a 1-inch (25 mm), silk-dome tweeter powered by a 35W, Class AB amplifier. It can crank out a clean 102 dB SPL, peak. Frequency response is rated at 53 Hz to 22 kHz. For a studio monitor in its size and price class, that's impressive. Thanks to well-designed Kevlar low frequency transducers, low-mass silk-dome tweeters, responsive Class AB amplification, and professional acoustic-adjustment controls, Eris delivers the goods.

Both Eris models provide balanced XLR, balanced ¼" TRS, and unbalanced RCA line-level inputs. When both balanced connections are in use, the TRS input will supersede the XLR input. The RCA input is summed into the signal path. With this selection, you'll have no problem hooking your Eris speakers up with virtually any line-level source. (If your signal source has unbalanced, ¼" TS outputs, simply use a ¼"-to-RCA adapter or adapter cable.)

You're in control!
Today's music producers deal with a wide variety of musical genres and often work in more than one location. It's easy to take your Eris speakers with you when you want to work in a different space. It's almost as easy to customize their sound for your room and type of music.

The most basic control is the Input Gain, which determines the signal level before it reaches the power amp. This is part of gain-staging your overall system-that is, setting the levels for every part of the recording chain in order to get the optimal level of clean audio all the way through. Once you've gain-staged your system, you can leave this control alone.

The Eris E5/E8 provides three EQ controls in its Acoustic Tuning section: High, Mid, and Low Cutoff. These controls enable you to fine-tune the monitors and even to broadly approximate the sounds of different types of speakers so you can hear what your mix might sound like, for instance, on a car stereo or portable radio. The Low control also is useful when using the E5 or E8 with a subwoofer.

Safety Matters
Any loudspeaker is subject to an assortment of environmental and performance problems, and Eris monitors offer protection from most common of these. RF shielding protects against radio frequencies that could be induced into the signal and become audible. (If you've ever heard a radio broadcast unexpectedly coming out of a guitar amp, that's the result of RF interference.)

Eris monitors also provide over-temperature protection to avoid heat-related issues, current-output limiting (to prevent damage should there be a short circuit on the speaker terminals), and subsonic protection to filter out extremely low-frequency vibrations that could interfere with the woofer's performance.
Finally, Eris' power amplifiers have a "soft startup" so that you don't get damaging pops in the speakers when you power them up.

Great Sound, Questionable Reliability

By Stan Dolecki

from Palatine IL

Comments about Presonus Eris E5 High-Definition 2-way 5.25" Nearfield Studio Monitor:

The E5's are good sounding monitors in my opinion, because they allow me to hear my mix more clearly and with greater stereo seperation. They generate a pretty nice 3 dimensional sound field close up, and the 'sweet spot' is large enough to be of use from several differant distances. They have a slight color or sound to them, but used with the flat settings and the right seperation, they are clear and detailed. In my case, I use them with flat settings and they are only two and a half feet away from my head. They should probably be further away, but they do what they are supposed to do: allow me to make better mixes. To my ears, these are the right tools for the job. I checked out everything I could in this price range - probably drove the guys at my local GC crazy, but in the end I found what works for me. As for quality, one monitor always had a bit of a hiss issue. I thought it was a noise problem at first but no matter where I put it, or how I rearranged cables, the hiss persisted. About 40 days into ownership, and admittedly with a lot of hours put on these, the quiet monitor simply died on me. Started blowing the AC mains fuse for the unit upon turn on. Long story short, Presonus took care of everything. Thier cutomer support was very good. They had me ship both units - for which they paid both ways. Turn around time was a little over two weeks, so kudos to them. Nice process. Both units came back in pristine condition and work flawlessly. The unit that hissed is now equally quiet. So, while I like these monitors, something was clearly up with them. I havent read anything about this issue yet, but I do check from time to time. These are worth checking out to be sure, but I cant recommend them without sharing my experience. If not for this, I would have given them four stars overall....

Not Reliable

By eric

Comments about Presonus Eris E5 High-Definition 2-way 5.25" Nearfield Studio Monitor:

I bought a pair of the Eris E5s at GC in August of 2013, and it is now July of 2014 and Both are sent in for repair to Presonus. The first one went out in March (tweeter stopped working) and the other in June 2014 (wouldnt power on and kept blowing fuses). I recently went to Gc and asked one of the salespeople if they has seen many issues with these. He said that one of the E5s stoppped working on the display and the Rep from Presonus pointed it out when he came by. This is not a good endorsement for these monitors. These are the only product Ive owned by Presonus, and they will be my last. I gave them two stars b/c they actually sounded good when they were working but I didnt expect them BOTH to go out in less than a year or I would have saved my money to buy better ones. I will say that Customer Service has been helpful so far and that is a rarity these days, and as the other reviewer said, Presonus did pay for shipping but I havent gotten them back so I cant say as to how effective the repair was or if it will last.

These monitors are amazing, their imagining are on par with monitors 4X the price. The also play loud without distorting. I actually take them with me when I'm working outside my studio if that studio doesn't have a pair. It's a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

Comments about Presonus Eris E5 High-Definition 2-way 5.25" Nearfield Studio Monitor:

I've tried every studio monitor. The two best were the JBL5 and this Presonus Eris 5. After taking both home to my studio I found that the Presonus is less hyped and has a more natural sound. The JBL sounded a little more 'EQ'd' sounding. I also found that the controls on the back of the Eris 5 were super helpful in tuning them for my room.

Comments about Presonus Eris E5 High-Definition 2-way 5.25" Nearfield Studio Monitor:

I tried to work things out with these monitors, but it just didn't happen. I was looking for a low budget pair to mix with for my home studio and found these on sale. Right off the bat, there was this annoying high pitched whine coming from both monitors. I troubleshot everything - no inputs, power conditioner, different outlets and different buildings with only the power plugged in, and the problem persisted. There was no way I could mix with these. I ordered another pair, thinking these couldn't possibly be earning all the 5 star reviews I'd seen, and the same thing happened. I'm not sure if I just kept plucking out of a bad batch or what, but I've since moved on to a pair of JBL's and there's no problem with them.

Thanks to GC for the great customer service along the way.

got these for christmas in 2014 and have used them almost every day since then. Easy to hook up, great sound quality but needs a little boost on the low end. Haven't had any issues with these except that one monitor gives a little bit of feedback for a few second every now and then. Other than that they are great monitors.
