I'd been trying to find a certain kinda bluesy, sustained sound with some smooth grit to it. I heard that sound on demos of this little pedal and got one. Yessir, that's what I needed all along, and I didn't have to pay big bucks to get that sound from an expensive rack-mount system. Ever try this pedal through a 12-string Ricky or an Omen-8? I even put it to an 8-string bass and a 7-string bass that goes down to a low F#. The tone and everything held up nicely. Now that's a versatile little box, especially for the price. I can reproduce every sound I heard in the demos, so that pretty much says it. Newbies to the guitar scene can get great enjoyment out of it without going broke. I highly recommend it.

I jut got mine today via UPS, and although I LOVE the tone and distortion you get from this pedal, my particular one won't turn on and off at the foot button the way it should. I tried it with the recommended power supply as well as a new 9V battery, through 2 different amps, with the same result. My MXR Phase 90 runs on the same adapter/power supply, and 9V battery, and turns on and off with your foot whenever you want. You should be able to switch this pedal on and off when you want with your foot, otherwise, what's the button for... this is ridiculous.

It just sounds good.

By Steven

from Atlanta GA

We as guitarists always search for that new distortion, that new sonic texture, that new inspiration. Well this little pedal has that in spades. I bought this on a whim...because the price was just too good to pass up and with MXR you know you are getting quality gear. I was pleasantly surprised when I plugged in and started tweaking the tones/gain. You can dial in a little grit, or you can go full aggressive distortion with the knobs cranked. Now don't think this is a Metal Distortion...no, you can get high gain...but this has a more classic distortion tone for when you need to dial it down but still want some grit. And sonically speaking, the harmonics and tone of this pedal is great. It just sounds good. Period

Great Value

By Shane

from Los Angeles, CA

This is an incredible pedal for the price. It has really crisp distortion that gets good and thick as you roll up the gain, it's very responsive to input volume (put a boost in front to get a really beefy distortion, or roll off the volume pot to get a sound similar to a slight overdrive), and has a great low end. A few tips: -I have a strat with a JB Jr high-output mini humbucker in the bridge, and this is really the only pickup that it sounds good with. I don't know if standard strat or tele bridge pickups have high enough output to sound good here. Humbuckers should be good though. -This isn't the highest gain pedal on the market, but can get some good metal tones with a boost in front of it. Like any distortion, it won't be to everyone's liking, but it would be a mistake not to try it out just because it is priced so low. It's one of my favorite pedals and only cost a small fraction of some of my boutique distortions.

Don't waste your money

By Ravinder

from Los Angeles, CA.

Not really that good, not much distortion to be honest with you. Tried it for a few days and decided to return it. The guy at my local Guitar Center said not many people liked this unit and had returned it. Do some more homework before you even think of buying this unit. It's not really that good.

Good starter pedal.

By Derek

from Plant City, FL

Got this pedal about a week ago and it sounds great. The distortion is better than on my Marshall amp. Easy to use and it looks awesome. My only complaint is that when you turn the tone all the way up, it takes "all" your bass and middle out. Not even leaving a little. But...since I don't every play with the tone all the way, I give it five stars.

Great Versatile Effects Petal

By Ian

from San Francisco CA

The MXR Prime Distortion is an amazing petal that delivers great sound and makes it very easy to switch between effects. The petal produces impressive sound with little to no static interference. As a beginner guitar player I have found this to be the perfect petal for switching between smooth acoustic tones and full electric distortion. I was lucky enough to catch this petal on sale, if you see it on sale grab it you won?t be disappointed.

Fizzy and thin...

By Mike Piellucci

from San Diego,California

This pedal has been receiving many good reviews, so I thought I would give it a try. I plugged it into my Ibanez TSA15 head, powering an Ampeg 4x12 with 4 Celestion 75's. It was way too fizzy and muddy. It also didn't work well with my wah pedal, which turned it into shrill pointy fuzz. It probably works better with other amps and guitars, based on the other reviews I've seen.

surprise!!!

By ROBERT GORZ

from Kaukauna WI

I got this because I needed a distortion pedal like yesterday and cash was tight. This pedal just blew me away. I set the output at 12 o'clock, tone about 10 O'clock, Distortion at 3 O'clock. Run it through a Fender Frontman R212 and did not believe what I heard. I don't think I'm going to replace this pedal as the rest of the band said that it was better than what I was using before. Awesome pedal.

Liked it so well I bought another!

By Kyle Covey

from Parker, Colorado

Have you ever had something so cool, and found it discontinued? I have, and have enough OCD to not let this type of situation get the best of me again. I have had pedals that have been no longer offered, and when mine crashed I was out of luck. Not this time - I dug this pedal so much on first use/listen - I bought another to have as reserve ... MXR is no longer showing it in their catalog. It is clear and tight, or can be dialed to be more muddy and loose. It is freaking awesome!!!! Get one before it is gone.
