This wah cries with versatility.

Bob Bradshaw of Custom Audio Electronics designed the MXR MC-404 CAE Dual Inductor Wah Pedal with the Cry Baby design team to create a highly versatile wah-wah with top-grade components. The MC404 CAE Wah features dual Fasel inductors with 2 distinct voices (high-end emphasis or low-to-mid resonance), and a built-in MXR MC-401 Boost/LineDriver that adds even more flexibility.

Choose between inductors and turn the boost on or off with the side-mounted kickswitches. Bright LEDs on each side of the wah indicate operation status. The MC404 CAE Wah boasts true hardwire bypass, a long-life CTS potentiometer, and internal pots for the Q control-which varies the intensity of the wah effect-and gain adjustments. You get the high performance and quality that you expect from Dunlop, the world leader in wah-wah technology.

Bob Bradshaw has been one of the world's foremost designers of custom guitar pedalboards and effects systems for many of rock's most influential guitarists for 3 decades. And for just as long, MXR and Cry Baby have been synonymous with the effects pedal innovations that have shaped the tone of modern electric guitar playing. So it was only natural for them all to join forces to create a dynamic line of pedals offering the ultimate in tone, functionality and road-worthy dependability. Since 1980, CAE's groundbreaking pedal designs were made in limited quantities only for a select clientele of world-class guitarists. But now these very same devices and circuits are available to all.

  • The be-all, end-all of wah pedals

As reviewed by Paul on 4/20/2010

If you're looking for the pedal that does, well, pretty much everything, this is it. Not only does it have both fasels that are easily switchable, but it also includes the MC401 boost circuit, so you can bump up your leads with a click. It's quiet, doesn't color your sound when bypassed and can be adjusted to suit what you're looking for (it also has adjustable Q and boost level). Hard to go wrong when you combine the original (Crybaby) with a genius (Bradshaw).

  • You try to take this from me, and I'll find you..

As reviewed by Jack S. on 1/29/2010

I love this wah! I've had mine for about 3 months now and I can honestly say that I am very happy with this wah. The red fasel has the deep sound of a standard crybaby, and the yellow fasel has a much more trebly sound, IMO. They aren't completely different, but the two have distinct differences. Also, there are three internal trim pots, so you can really dial in this bad boy to your liking. This is the only pedal that has kept a solid spot on my board. If someone stole it from me, I would track them down, take my wah back, and proceed to beat them over the head with it until they lost consciousness. Then I'd plug this sukka in, and rock out...that's how tough it is. Very solid! =)

  • Probably the best wah as far as "best" goes

As reviewed by Paul on 7/7/2011

I've had a ton of different wahs over the ages of time. Probably far less real difference than we would care to admit or accept. It is all the inductor circuit and whether it's a pot wah or optical. I think most change or get different wahs because of the interaction with our guitar rigs. Hardly any wah sounds really good through pedal distortion that is just how it goes. It's a bandpass filter and that is really all a wah is. The MXR CAE is as good as the pot wah gets, top shelf components and options. Dual quality real "Fazel" inductors, red is lower darker voiced and the Yellow is more a traditional wah, this wah is a Crybaby type voice and also has the MXR boost circuit. Switches on the sides change inductors or turn on and adjust boost level knob. LEDS are bright and easy to see what is on and a green LED "wah on" which is nice. In case you need to know, yes the boost only works with the wah on. Range is as good as it gets and the vowel quality of the sweep is good. Last but not least, real true hard wire bypass. This is a great wah and can be adjusted to suit about any application you can come up with. Sounds very good clean or before and after OD, w dist you take what you get depends on the pedal, w amp dist is great. It is very reasonable for the price, I have paid more and gotten the same or less. True Bypass and extremely low mA draw. There are trim pots inside to adjust the Q point of either inductor and also a gain adjust they do not mention. Factory is probably set as it needs to be but there is that option if you need it. I do not think anything is going to sound or be "better'. These are the same mods Custom Audio Engineering (CAE) via Bob Bradshaw used to charge an arm and leg to mod for players.
