Small, Simple, Effective
The MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal is an effect pedal without all the bells and whistles you usually find in modern effects. Don't let the lack of features fool you though. This pedal gets the job done. The center knob gives you control of the "wave frequency" of the phaser signal (how fast the phase sounds). The the button to activate the effect makes a loud "click" when depressed which lets you know its on.
When I was looking for a phaser pedal I was choosing between this one (MXR M-101 Phase 90 Pedal) and the Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter pedal. Both have their positives and negatives, but out of personal taste, I decided that I didn't need all the features that came with the more expensive Boss pedal (dont get me wrong, its also a great pedal). The PH-3 gave me all I needed, a thick, rich sounding phase effect, with simplicity.
In case you don't know the phase effect is a "sweeping sound". It sounds like a plane flying back and forth across the sky. Really cool.

MXR Phase
Simple to use with only one knob. You can dial in sweeping phase reminiscent of early Pink Floyd or add distortion and shred like EVH.
This pedal should be part of any guitarist's rig.

Amazing pedal
This is a great pedal for any guitar. To be more specific, the sound is closest to the Led Zeppelin song "No Quarter". Please do be warned though, that this is basically the exact same pedal as the EVH phase 90 except a little more "retro" looking. None the less, this is an amzing pedal, which is simple, and has a great sound.

Great phaser for the price
The Phase 90 is the most basic phaser you can get. One knob for speed is all it has, and it's all you need...pretty simple!
For me, the Phase 90 gave me a bit of a sharp high boost. Some folks like this, personally I prefer a more vintage sounding phase tone. A DIY mod takes about 5 minutes and is terribly easy (the "R28 mod"). Basically you just clip the R28 transistor and the pedal will no long boost when activated. Of course, to be warned, this will make your warranty invalid. Something to look into if you want a smoother, more "vintage" tone.
Regardless, the Phase 90 is a great phaser for the cash which explains why it's the standard phaser on many pedalboards.

Speed!
This bright orange pedal practically defined the classic phase shifter sound. This one-knobbed orange wonder has played its part in nearly every genre's effect happy moments. The Phase 90 has been stomped and swirled through 70s jazz fusion, 80's hard rock, and even 90s grunge. The effect is very pronounced and always ready to sweep your signal into action. The newer models are remarkably close to older models in terms of overall sound and durability. There are some advantages and disadvantages to buying new or buying vintage. For example, the older units are a little smoother but tend to be a noisy while the newer units add a tinge of distortion on faster settings but adds LED status and AC power. Take this into consideration when shopping around but all in all, you really can't go wrong with all the various versions of the Phase 90.
