The MXL 990 Condenser Microphone with shock mount has a silky, sweet high end while retaining tight, solid low and midrange reproduction. The 3/4" gold-sputtered diaphragm creates a professional sound suited for digital and analog recording. Attractive vintage body style with champagne finish. The 30Hz-20kHz frequency response is ideal for lead and background vocal, male or female. Includes custom shock mount, mic stand adapter, and case. Remember folks, this mic requires phantom power, so make sure your console or interface delivers it before ordering.

There are a bazillion studio vocal mics on the market that break the magical $100 barrier, a traditionally unheard of price point for a studio vocal mic. Once that price floor was demolished, however, the market became flooded with offerings in the $80 - $100 price range. MXL has emerged as a true leader in this market, and the MXL990 is MXL's flagship product in that category. If a well-built, good-sounding, versatile studio microphone for less than $100 sounds like a good fit for your current needs, you can't go wrong with the MXL990.

I have owned this mic now for about 3 years. Bought it for a portable studio and proved to be quite worth it. I even drop it a couple months back on the leg of my studio chair and dented the screen...still works fine! I am starting to get a lot more advanced in my skills and am starting to see that even though it made good music for me and friens to listen to, its not the best for pro recording. Price really has nothing to do with the mic since you can find a nice mic without skipping a car payment, but beware that this is really only a temp solution to get you into the door. Down the road if you are still recording, you'll need to upgrade to a more receptive high end mic. (high end as freq, not price)

Well first of all, for the guy who wrote the comment about the phantom power, I hate to break it to you but ALL condenser Mics require phantom power. You shouldn't have bought it if you couldn't supply the phantom power. But Moving on, this mic is not a bad deal at all. I have used it to record vocals, guitars, and some other instuments. If you really want to improve the sound, then get some GOOD pre-amps and you will be pretty impressed at the change in sound quality. However for those who think they might be dissapointed with this mic, just remember that you get what you pay for. You can't purchase an MXL mic and expect it to sound like a AKG or a NEUMANN. Be Logical.

Great Mic

By ron smith

from Marysville WA

I love this Mic. It's easy to use and really sounds good. The only problem with this "MXL 990 Condenser Microphone" is that it shows you how good or bad you really are. It picks up everything really good so use the shock mount. This Mic is perfect for the home studio and for that acoustic gig. Buy it you can't go wrong with this one.

For beginners

By Jerry Hurley

from NC

This mic is fabulous. As a beginner recorder and musician at the age of fourteen, this made my dreams come true. This mic blew me away for the price. After looking at a few reviews, I felt like a lot of people are oblivious to the fact that all condenser mics require phantom power. If your that dedicated to your hobby then you must buy a decent PA system. I own a Yamaha EMX 660, which comes with a phantom power switch, which ran to my computer, strait into fruity loops with ease. Also make sure you get a pop filter (I recommend the Musician gear double pop filter, a little more pricey than the single but has a much higher quality) with out a pop filter, it does not sound as good, but over all I am thoroughly impressed with this "bang for buck" mic. A mic stand is the icing on the cake, that brings it all together. Get this mic to my specs and you will not be sorry.

Great for a start

By Bunnara Mok

from Charlotte, NC

I will give this a 5 star since it truly deserves it for not being overpriced for the quality. I've used an AT2020 before using this mic and there is a huge difference. The shockmount that comes with it is a made well. I do not hear any vibrations whatsoever. If you are wanting that low and mid feel to a mic, this is the perfect one for you. Especially if you are a singer who is looking for a nice feel. No matter how much I messed with the EQ's, both on the program and mixer, the sound would only change by a tiny bit. The only thing that really changed was the high end noise. I let others use this mic also to experiment how they sound. It sounded really nice and bright. Then I let someone rap and it sounded bland and mellow no matter how many times I edited it. Overall, I was satisfied with the price and quality after owning it for a year.

Hot little mike

By Gary Reiter

from Indpls

Decided to get the MXL990 with the shockmount rather than the MXL990/991 kit b/c I usually don't mike the guitar anyway when recording... reviews were good. Packaging, look & feel are great. No instructions for mounting shockmount but it's already assembled. Also comes with clip for mounting w/o shockmount. Tested live through my Fender powered mixer and it's sound quality is much clearer than the decent dynamic mikes I own but, being a condenser mike, it's too hot for the size of my practice space so I'll keep the dynamic mikes for rehearsal and stage. One other thing: It came with 2 elastic bands in a little bag, so I sent an email to MXL tech support to confirm that these are just spares. (They are.) They answered me within the hour!

Great for singing, but really bad for louder stuff.

from Denver Colorado

I like this mic if I'm singing quieter stuff. But if I try to do Bono-esque stuff or even screaming for metal, it peaks out and you get these wonderful little spikes even if you have your levels properly adjusted. You can hear it overdrive the mic. Standing back from the mic works, but in the studio, you can tell the singer is standing back. It kills the quality. It's really crisp and clear and has served me well, but I need an alternate mic to do the loud stuff sadly.

Money well spent

By James Maxwell

from Priceville, Alabama

I'm an associate pastor of a new growing church in North Alabama. I am setting up our music and stage equipment on a very tight budget. After all the reviews I kept going back to this mic. I'm so glad I did!! Took it to church and plugged into our Yamaha mixer and plugged in my guitar and was amazed by the sound of this mic. I had my own solo concert. It has nice highs and smooth low tones. I will be purchasing a couple of these MXL 990 for my own use. Get you one I'm glad I did!

Will purchase another one ASAP

By Reverend Robert Johnson

from Norfolk, VA

I've used this mic and the 603 for the past 10-13 years. Dropped my 990 on the metal base of my Microphone Stand and dislodged the Diaphragm. The mic(s) are great and sturdy. It it had landed on the carpet as it has numerous times before,it probably would have survived. I will definitely purchase another one ASAP. "Great MIC,Great Investment"
