KRK VXT 4 Powered Studio Monitor

I have never wrote review on anything in my life but I had to put this out there: GET THESE!! When I plugged them in and started to listen to some of the songs I had wrote, I'm like, WOW...is that me?...and when the acoustic guitar came in, I about fell out of my chair! I'm mainly a bass player and you talking about "smooth, clean and strong"...wow...("And I'm not using a sub") I've heard people talk about how monitors can make or break your mix and now I see how right they are...These puppies are "AWESOME"

I bought the limited edition white versions of these speakers about a year ago from some guy selling them very cheap on amazon, for only $100 a monitor, practically stealing. Here's the background: I started out with the M-Audio BX5 monitors a while back and they were my first set of monitors. Those were decent for about a year, but after that I needed to upgrade. So I went to guitar center and listened to what they had. After a while, I ended up buying a pair of KRK Rokit 8 G2 monitors. As I would expect, those were better than the BX5s. I've had the Rokits for about 2 years now and after having to move my studio to a small room, I decided the Rokits were just too big and had to go. I began the search for smaller monitors, and with a much bigger budget, I didn't want to go backwards to the rokit 5s. Personally I really like the look of KRK monitors so I decided my next purchase would be a small monitor from them that was above the consumer level of the rokits so I had no choice but to look at the VXT line. Now when I was at guitar center two years prior, I did have a listen to the VXT line including the VXT6 and VXT8, both of which did not sound very good or particularly flat so I was not impressed, so it seemed like I wouldn't be looking at KRK for my next monitor after all. But then I saw a guy selling a new pair of white VXT4s on amazon for $100 a monitor and I just couldn't resist. I was thinking that even if the monitors weren't that great, that I would only be out $200 and I could use them elsewhere. Well... huge surprise... Now I want to clear up a pretty big misconception with these two KRK lineups as most people give much less credit to the VXT line than they deserve. I too an one point was clueless as to how a monitor such as a VXT 4 could cost $50 more than a Rokit 8 considering that the Rokit 8 has much more power and could handle levels much louder than the VXT 4, or so they claim, but even after having them for 3 days, I can clearly tell you that these are miles ahead of any Rokit monitor. Where to even start... Construction: Each of these small monitors weighs in at 14lbs, which for their size is really quite heavy. Still to this day, it surprises me how solid these are. Just go knock on one and you'll see what I mean. It literally feels like you are knocking on a solid piece of aluminum. The woofer itself is also made of a very nice double woven material and a nice rubber surround, but that's not really what makes this a better quality woofer. If you just give the outer woofer a nice little push with your finger, the woofer moves back extremely smooth and with almost no resistance. Anyone who has ever built a speakers knows that it's difficult to have a woofer move very smooth and soft while maintaining a very strong structure and not flexing. This makes it easier on the amplifier to drive the woofer, and the woofer naturally wants to move which gives an extremely flat and natural sounding output. That alone is only a small part of what makes these miles ahead of the Rokits. Go and try it for yourself. Try and push the woofer of let's say a rokit 8 and then a VXT 8 and you'll notice the rokit is very stiff compared to the VXT woofer. Now let's talk about the most important part about a monitor and that's the sound it produces. After a proper break in, I listened to a few very familiar songs just to see how these compared to my older Rokit 8s. All I can say is wow... my first thoughts were that these small VXT4s absolutely blow the Rokit 8s away with the sound they produce. It is absolutely everything you could want in a monitor. The sound is extremely full sounding and the clarity is amazing. Even after listening to them for a few hours I can say that these have more depth and more clarity than the Rokit 8 which was twice its size. You can really feel the engineering that went into this monitor, just from the extremely solid enclosure to the quality of the woofer, the sound that these put out really make you feel the quality that was put into these. But here's the real difference: I made quite a few mixes on the Rokit 8s while I had them, and for the most part my mixes sounded good. Taking my music to speakers other than the Rokit 8s, I could tell there was always something that didn't sound the way I intended it to, and for I while, I was ok with that. But, after re listening to my mixes on the VXT 4s, all of a sudden I heard so many mistakes.... For most of you who have read reviews about the Rokit 8s know that they are favored by dance producers because of their ability to reproduce a kick drum, or in other words, they were on the bass heavy side. Not a problem I though as I got used to them, I would just keep in mind that the kick would be a bit louder than I would typically have. Well was I wrong... Playing just a few tracks on the VXT 4s, I immediately realized my low end was way too loud! I was very surprised. How could it be that my Rokit 8s, which were known as bass heavy, actually made me turn up the kick louder than it should be... that basically contradicts them being bass heavy as typically on speakers that are bass heavy, you would turn the kick down to compensate for the mids and the highs, but no, somehow the Rokits made me make the kick way too loud, and not just a tad bit loud, but overpowering the other sounds loud. Yes you heard that correctly, the 4 inch woofer in the VXT 4 actually made me realize I had more bass than what the 8 inch woofer on the rokit 8 was telling me. Not only that, as mentioned previously, the VXT 4s pointed out a ton of mistakes that the Rokits just didn't do. After fixing those mistakes on the VXT4s, I immediately went and played my song on a variety of other speakers and to my surprise, all the mistakes were actually gone, and the low end was just the right level. I'm using these as my desktop speakers in my office. While I wish they had volume control, it's a small thing. These speakers have a wonderful and rich sound. They're accurate, but not so as to be harsh. They'll also crank while maintaining accuracy. You can't go wrong.

these monitor might be small but they are as loud as the rokit krk G2 v8 and they sound clearer too. I got my pair for cheap and they are new too.

I bought these last month when Guitar Center had them on special. I was looking at the Rokit 5 and the M-Audios. I checked out all 3 in the Northridge store. The M-Audios were OK, the Rokits were nice, but these had a better high end and better bottom end. When I first heard them I thought, "Where's the subwoofer". These things crank out the bass, but in an accurate way. And since they were smaller than the other speakers and similarly priced, I grabbed these. No regrets.
