  • Made a classic even better!

As reviewed by Vince Lombino on 5/23/2010

My '68 Tele's pickups, switch & wiring finally wore out after 42 years, so my guitar tech recommended these pickups quite highly. After the guitar was "overhauled," it sounded absolutely amazing. They pull tons of tone out of the 42 year-old ash body with plenty of twang & sustain. TIP: get the 4-position selector switch if you install these in your Tele for added versatility.

  • Excellent Upper End Pickup

As reviewed by TJ Nugent on 10/20/2010

I love the tone of the over wound Texas Special pickups. Previously, I had been putting Duncan Antiquity pickups in my guitars, but needed to get finish this guitar, so I decided to try the Texas Special to see if this less expensive pickup would sounds as good. I was pleasantly surprised when I plugged into my Vox amp and heard the sweet overwound sound of these pickups. They are perfect for a 60's Strat. My hat is off to Fender Custom Shop.

  • NOT a One-Trick Pony!

As reviewed by Russell Smith on 2/25/2013

I installed these pickups in a Squier Classic Vibe Telecaster I thoroughly upgraded with new electronics, a half tele bridge, bone nut and tuners. After reading the reviews on-line, I wasn't quite sure what to expect but took a chance. I play chicken-pickin' tele, bebop and old-school blues. These pickups cover it all and do so authentically. They truly respond to your playing AND your amp/pedal setup. I play through a number of boutique and modded pedals into a Vox AC-15C1 and found these pickups are just as authentic and wonderful whether dirty, clean or anything in-between. The one area I have to concur thoroughly on with other reviewers is do yourself - and your tone - a favor and wire these pickups with a 4 way switching mod for series or parallel with both pickups on. Although I don't play rock, I couldn't help but wonder if a lot of the Jimmy Page things attributed to a Les Paul aren't actually his top-load Tele with it's pickups wired in series. Yes, it's that fat. I recorded it and A/B'ed it against my Les Paul with friends who had to listen repeatedly to tell which was which. I have Seymour Duncan vintage stack Tele pickups in my other Tele because I can't stand hum, but wanted something different for this guitar. After a couple of weeks, I have to say I got something different AND something very familiar: You can cover a LOT of ground with them. The bridge is beautiful clean, growls like a bear with natural amp distortion, has twang for days and best of all, is VERY agreeable with distortion pedals. The neck pickup is sweet and bell-like when clean, gives authentic Charlie Christian jazz tone and will even do a nice faux woman-tone when dirty. These are wonderful pickups and having heard them, I'd have been happy if I'd paid twice the Guitar Center cost. That said, think twice before going the "boutique pickup" route. I've been down that road and been disappointed. Fender is a great company that just keeps getting better and better. These pickups prove it.
