  • Great Bass

As reviewed by Rick Gaines on 1/21/2011

I have played bass for 42 years. Like many I was a big Beatle fan. I have always wanted a Hofner but did not like the price. I saw this bass along with the knock off Hofners. After playing the Hofner, I picked up the Epiphone. WOW was I surprised. The sound beat the Hofner hands down. The fit and finish was perfect. The sound was deep and soulfull with good mids. The action was set at the factory and I must say they got it right. Did not have to change a thing. It holds tune very well. I am very happy with this bass. It did take me a bit to get use to the short scale. I would tell you to try this bass, you will love it.

  • Epiphone or Hofner?

As reviewed by Dr. Gln Roger Davis on 8/16/2011

The fit and finish of the hollow body Epiphone Viola Bass is superior to that of the German made hollow body Hofner Violin Bass. The Epiphone intonates much better than the Hofner. The German made Hofner has a little better focus on the low E string. With Pyramid strings, and playing over the sweet spot (just in front of the bridge pickup), the Epiphone's somewhat tubby low E string is brought more into focus. Playing with a pick also helps. The German made Hofner costs about 10 times as much as the Epiphone! The Hofner Contemporary Series Bass (which has a partial solid block running the length of the body) costs twice as much as the Epiphone. The Epiphone- because it is a hollow body bass- sounds more like the German made Hofner than does the Hofner Contemporary Series Bass. If you have the big bucks to spend, a real German made Hofner is great (yes, I have one, and a Hofner Contemporary Series Bass). Otherwise, get the Epiphone (I have one of these also). It is a sweet bass, sets up beautifully, plays like warm butter, and has a sexy look. I find that a Hartke Bass amplifier ( 4x10 or 2x10 and one 15 with a 350 watt head) is best for the Epiphone's tonal qualities.

  • No way !

As reviewed by Kevin pezzuti on 7/25/2011

I never imagined that a cheap bass would have me put down all of my other basses for a 2 year run. It came set up perfect out of the box, sounds and plays great, and is very light.I have neck and shoulder problems and currently play in a jam band were sets average 90 plus minutes. I purchased this bass to accommodate those specific needs and it far exceeded them all. 100 gigs later and still going strong.
