Great Deal

I went to my local GC with a $600 budget (relatively low in the world of bass guitars.) Like most other musicians, my pockets aren't too deep. After doing some research online, I had my heart set on buying the Spector Legend 4. However, when I got there, they had just sold the last one in stock so I had to try out other gear. The Epiphone Thunderbird caught my eye, simply because of its unique body. I should point out that the color is darker than the picture shown here, which in my opinion looks better. I plugged it into the Fender Rumble 100, which is the amp i currently use. The tone was amazing. Very full and defined. It is also a versatile base. I like to play anything from Earth Wind and Fire to Guns n Roses, so I was especially concerned about getting a bass that could handle all kinds of styles. i was able to get a big fat tone for those reggae and oldschool funk type songs, as well as the crisp tones for slapping and popping the red hot chili peppers type stuff, and everything in between. The look definitely appeals mostly to the Rockers out there, but this bass can be used for all the styles of music. It also feels great to play. Although i have small hands, the neck was still incredibly playable and comfortable. The pickups have a little groove for you to rest your thumb on, which i thought was a blessing. I was surprised to find out that the bass only cost $399. I tried out other basses (Schecter C4 and Stiletto, Spector Euro and Rebop). These were awesome basses as well, but each cost at least $100 more than the Thunderbird. While the look, playability and tone on each of these basses was great, it wasn't enough to justify spending the extra money on them. There are two minor downsides to this bass. First of all, the neck is heavy as a mofo. However, after some time, it?s not hard to get used to the weight distribution. Second, one of the knob covers was loose, but all i had to do to fix it was push it back in and it was fine. I highly recommend this bass for people who have crappy gear like I did, especially beginners. Since I purchased the bass about 3 weeks ago, I haven?t been able to put it down, and have been more motivated to practice since I?m now using a better rig. It?s difficult to look at this bass on a guitar stand and not want to play it. With the money i saved, i decided to purchase a one year extended warranty from GC (about 40 bucks), which basically adds a year to the manufacturer's warranty and covers more stuff. Because the guitar comes with a Limited lifetime warranty from Epiphone, the warranty ended up translating to ten years of extra coverage. Bottom Line: Great Bass for a Great Price.

Nice Bass for a Low Price

It sounds better than any $300 bass should. Of course, it doesn't sound like a $5,000 bass because it's not. I added a new strap button to fix the neck dive and replaced the strings with Marcus Miller Fat Beams on day one. It's a great value for only $300. I own some higher price basses, yet this T-bird is one of my favorties. You just can't beat this bass at this price if you're willing to add a new strap button to fix the neck dive. And it looks so cool. I play it live through an Ampeg SVT1000 and feel like I'm Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue.

Finally

I've wanted a Thunderbird for years now. Just finally got around to getting it. I don't mind the neck drive; looks cool when you hold it very loosely. Changing the strings to some Ernie Ball. A great bass!

great!!

My advice is if you can afford the gibson (i cant) buy it. Ive compared the 2 models, the gibsons a little spiffier and sounds a tiny bit better but the epiphone plays fine and looks awesome so i think theirs a difference between the two but its not very big. the T-birds a great bass.

best bass ive played !!! great job Epiphone

i played this at the store and new it was my new bass. i have a 20 year old EB-0 SG i found at goodwill and its frets where worn out so instead of the 350 dollars for that i bought this and i dont have a complaint. its a little longer than my sg but its so smooth to play it dosent matter. i can actualy slap on this one. im sticking with this till i can see the truss through the fret board.
