Electro-Voice
Description
The Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 is a compact, amplified loudspeaker system, which is designed for portable sound reinforcement applications that require maximum portability.

The EV ZXA1-90 audio speaker uses the EV8L, a high output, low distortion, 203mm (8") woofer. The woofer is paired with the DH2005, a titanium diaphragm 1" exit true compression driver. The compression driver is coupled to a rotatable 90 x 50 waveguide for smooth response to 20kHz and excellent pattern control.

The ZXA1-90 loudspeaker is powered by an integrated 800W, 2-channel amplifier module. The amplifier has XLR microphone and line level inputs, as well as an XLR line level output for daisy chaining several amplified speakers or a subwoofer. The biamplified design features steep crossover slopes and woofer excursion protection for maximum output and reliability. A switchable high pass filter allows for use with a subwoofer.

The Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 injection molded enclosure is made from high impact polystyrene for durability and light weight. The handle pocket and pole mount make the ZXA1-90 ideal for many portable applications. The ZXA1-90 speaker enclosure also features a built-in monitor angle for floor monitor applications. The bottom of the Electro-Voice ZXA1-90 features four #8-32 suspension points for permanent installation.

  • Good sound, won't survive regular gigging

I purchased (2) ZXA1's and the sub for my full range set up for gigging. I play acoustic/nylon guitar for reference. The speakers are well built, sound great, are very lite and produce a rich sound. But after just 9 months of use I had to return them to BOSCH for repair. Speakers were overheating and randomly cutting out. Once repaired, a few months of normal use the problem returned. At one point both speakers would stop working in the middle of the gig. Not a good feeling. I would not recommend the ZXA1-90 to anyone who performs outside or desires a dependable speaker.

  • With a sub a perfect main speaker

The ZXA1-90 gets excellent reviews across several retailer websites and music forums. However, I was impressed with the reviews, features and specs of the QSCK8.2. What would sound best with my Yamaha Digital Stage Piano? Doing an A-B comparison at home, I could not deny that the Electro-Voice speakers sounded clearer with tighter bass and for less money and less weight - even after altering all of the wonderful settings the QSC speakers offered. However if you want to drive several instruments and a mike through your system, the QSC offers the kind of controls and inputs that will enable you to accomplish this more so than the EV's. If you are playing at home, or at a small restaurant or club where its just you (and a mike) plugging into your speakers, the EVs are the better value and are lighter in weight. Using my piano EQs, I was able to get the EV's to sound just fine and more easily than messing with the variable settings the QSC speakers offered. But if you are playing in a band with three or more people, it is probably advisable to get the EV subwoofer with your ZXAs. But driving two ZXA1-90s for stereo imaging moves a lot of air and will probably suffice in the bass end UNLESS you are supporting your band with left-handed bass lines. One Improvement: a handle would be better than the indentation used to carry the EV speaker but at 19 pounds, it's not an issue.

Nice and compact yet packs a punch. I advise getting the corresponding zxa1 sub to go along with for that nice added bass.

I am a Dueling Piano player who does a lot of corporates and private parties. The Electrovoice ZaX1 series has it all for me. Lightweight and compact, it is easy to move and set up. I use the ZaX1-90s for my mains and monitors. The mains are paired with the Zax1 12" subs. I have played sizable ballrooms with these at high volume, and had no experience with distortion. If you have ever run two pianos through a system, you know how hard that is to do. The speakers come equipped with 8" high excursion speakers and a 80x50 degree horn that can be oriented either sideways or straight stack. The emblem is also movable so you can see at a glance which way the horn is oriented. The speakers can be signaled with either 1/4 phone jacks or XLR, my preferred connectors. These speakers used with my Allen and Heath board require no EQ for my applications, as they are very precise and clean. I use the high pass filter for both monitors and mains as I like a very critical and high volume monitor that cuts. The one critique I have of these is that they have no EQ control on the amp. Since I am quite pleased with the natural EQ of these speakers, I do not find that to be a problem, although others might. O course a graphic could be inserted in the signal side if desired. I have used Mackey, Peavey, Ross, Cerwin Vega, and JBL. These are the best speakers I have ever owned
