The Pro Tools Budget Box V2
submitted19 years ago

Better than the standard Mbox2, the Mbox 2 Pro is the upgraded version of the baseline audio input/output box for Digidesign Pro Tools, the expensive-but-worth it gold standard for audio creation software. Key improvements include: -More outputs in addition to the monitor outputs (6 analog, 1 SPDIF, 2 monitor analog) -Coaxial word clock support -A direct-to-ground connector to enhance overall sonic quality -More inputs (2 XLR, 2 RCA, 2 1/4") The same less-than-fantastic problems that plague the Mbox 2 standard version (as well as most other audio I/O boxes in this price range) apply. The knobs are still a bit too small for average usage, and the input ports are all on the rear of the case rather than on the front, which for instrument connections would be more advantageous. Still, the direct competition to this product is really the M-Audio Firewire 410 which has similar accoutrement (minus the word clock) and--since M-Audio was purchased by Digidesign's parent company--also has access to Pro Tools. Overall though, this product would be vastly enhanced with a full-mixer (purchased separately) as software mixing is a bit dodgy in terms of ease of use. In the end, this is designed for a very specific purpose; High Quality Audio I/O and a direct interface with Pro Tools.
