The Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-880 Rhythm Machine is a rhythm-programming powerhouse loaded with world-class drum, percussion, and bass sounds from Roland's famous SRX library. It also includes a stunning collection of original waveforms. You can get microscopic in programming the DR-880, but you also have the option of taking the simple route with its 3 EZ Compose buttons that allow original patterns to be constructed without note-by-note programming hassles. Patterns can be taken deeper with the Groove Modify feature, where various groove and triplet feels can be applied. Ghost notes and fills can also be added automatically. Guitar and bass players can join the action by plugging directly to the DR-880's Guitar/Bass Input jack, and playing through the built-in COSM Drive/amp models and multi-effects.

I play guitar and bass. I got this machine to practice along to. I have owned for about 6 months and play with it every day possible. I havent really tinkered around with programming my own drum patterns but, it seems to be pretty ez to do. My friend has the Alesis 16. The Alesis was put on the market in the 90's. It is simple and basic. The Dr 880 offers way more possibilities. AND, it is not just a drum machine. Being able to plug your guitar/bass directly into the unit and using it as an effects pedal is great. The only down side, BOSS dropped the ball on not putting enough memory in this puppy. I would suggest to BOSS to either add more memory or add an SD card slot. It does have a USB port, not sure if you can plug in an external hardrive? If your thinkin about getting it. IT IS WORTH THE MONEY! GET IT!
I got the Boss DR880 in 2005. I have to say that it took my level of playing from intermediate to advanced...the machine has so much to offer that its well worth the price. It is ideal for improving timing since it sure beats using a metronome. It has the GT6 effects processor, which has very good sounds for guitar & bass. And since its Boss, you know that the machine will last you a long time. It has got to be one the best investments that I made as a musician. Get one and see for yourself. Also, the "quality" of the drum sounds is amazing too, very realistic. I think its the Roland's SRX sound engine in there. BUY it!!!!!!!
This can be one of the most valuable pieces of gear in your small studio. I play saxophone and this machine is better than any metronome or midi keyboard solution. It has hundreds of pre-programmed rhythms , including Samba, Bossa, Gospel, Blues, Jazz, Rock etc. It is easy to use and set-up favorites. You can write hundreds of your own rhythms, back-up your settings to your PC, drive the machine from midi over both MIDI cables and USB. The features go on and on..
Well, seems everyone loves this little box and so do I! I really did just come in for some new guitar strings, but after a half hour of playing around with this thing I was sold! The sound quality is great, and its easy to use. Once you start getting into the programming, you realize how easy the step record is to use. Much like the old TR909, you only see the options for beats that you have set the quantize for. So if you choose a quantize setting of 1/8 notes, you'll see 8 little boxes. If there's a circle in the box, there's a note there. What could be simplier? This thing really is a band in a box, but guitar players might be taken by surprise when they try the built in effects. They sound good, really good! I've even done some test recordings and the sound quality is great. You can also plug keyboards into it if you want, and just turn off the guitar effects. Love it, and I play with it everyday. Single best "bang for the buck" piece of gear I ever bought.
I've had this drum machine for about a year now, and not once has it had problems, complications. If you are a bass player like me you will find that this works great to get a good feel of rhythm, because it has a guitar and or bass input. Plus if you are also a recording engineer, you will find that it has midi ports so it works well as a controller for your studio too. You will however have to assign you instruments to each individual pad, and it has around 500 user tracks, u can delete, edit, compose those tracks. You can also take a premade track and change it and save it to your user space. One last thing when u play on one of the premade tracks it diplays the chords and note us should play. Oh but wait you will find it has lots of nice samples, and bass sounds and drum sounds to compose tracks. So buy it and enjoy!
the first day i got this ,i was able to do songs right away.(for a couple of hours maybe). The Ez compose is very usefull .I do it for basic pattern and then modify it using the real time recording, save a lot of time instead of doing the pattern from scratch. Also i can copy the pre-set pattern and modify it, and save it to user pattern. It also quantize your beat during real time recording and it saves time instead of quantizing it after recording. This box is a very good tool for making music. The only thing that i was looking for is the Undo button evrytime i made a mistake.lol. A little bit pricey but it's worth it. NIce guitar fx too .(any reason why i like this) PADS are kinda small but i'm happy with this.
Here's why you should buy this, period! OK it's expensive, but...This is so much more than a "drum machine." It has over 1000 patterns-extensive and superior quality blues, rock, jazz, etc patterns, plus it's so easy to make your own grooves. But, what I like is the bass and guitar accompany. The Boss DR-880 gives you key, chord, and progression on the screen as you go. This is without question the best training tool I have ever seen. All those patterns and you can play key, chord, tempo. Its like having a bass player, drummer, and teacher all in one. You have to check this out. It's a hint into the future.
I use mine at least 30 minutes a day. Great sounding and great to use live with all the pedal controls via the optional footswitches. It is probably the funnest device you can buy. I've had mine around 8 months now. After you get the drill down it is easy to use. People, musicians and non-musicians alike comment on how the great sounds are. All this things needs is a PC based editor and the ability to write patches to memory a little faster and it'd be just perfect.
Great machine, has a lot of features but could use a few more useful ones, also four more analog outputs would be great. User friendly. Best machine I have ever had in it's class. The quality of the unit and the sound is excellent, that is what makes the hefty price tag worth it.
