I bought the GE-7 becasue so many people were saying that it worked well as a boost switch for soloing. I play a couple times a month in a country/classic rock band and wanted something to simply turn off and on when soloing. The GE-7 was devivered to my school where I teach 7-8th grade guitar class. Needless to say, we don't have any professional amps or guitars, so I just plugged the GE-7 into one of the little Peavy practice amps that we use and grabbed a Samick Malibu. Man was I blown away. It litereally sounded like I was plugged into a large, warm, tube amp. Everything I played through the little practice amp was so much better, that I hated to turn the EQ off because the amp sounded, well, like a practice amp without it. I have a Palomino V16 that is my everyday amp and I haven't had a chance to run the EQ through that yet, but I imagine it will fatten up that amp as well. My only dilema now is I need to get another boost switch.
The Boss GE-7 Equalizer Pedal is a fantastic way to expand your tone. If you're using pedal effects and haven't tried inculding an EQ in your chain you're really missing out on a great way to vastly expand your tonal range. You can use the GE-7 before a distortion or overdrive to completely change the sound of your guitar before it's amplified (which can allow you to fatten up single coils, or give humbuckers and edge they don't normally exhibit), or you can also use it after effects to better control your sound. EQ's are really one of the most essential tools you can have around and you'll find the Boss GE-7's a great place to start, especially if you're working with pedals.
I was about ready to disown a certain guitar amp because I couldn't dial out the piercing highs on the drive channel...I love the clean channel on this amp so I wasn't quite ready to give up...so I tried the Boss GE7 through the effects loop and sure enough, I was able to dial out the unwanted frequencies and accent the ones I wanted...problem solved and it saved me from shelling out more cash on a different amp!
