Overview

The revolutionary XR18 is a powerhouse 18 input/12 bus portable/rack-mountable mixer for iPad and Android tablets, and is ideally suited for both live and studio applications, thanks to its 16 award-winning MIDAS-designed mic preamps, convenient integrated Wi-Fi module for wireless control, plus USB connectivity for file storage, system updates and uncompressed stereo recordings via the USB Stereo Recorder. There are also rack ears and protective bumpers included for added flexibility in your studio and stage applications. The freedom to move around and manipulate all parameters of your mix with the free iOS and PC apps lets you dial in the perfect sound from anywhere in the venue “ or the tracking room.

MIDAS “ The Legend in Sound Quality
Ever since its formation in the 1970s, MIDAS has had a long history of innovation and leadership in the world of audio mixing consoles. Employed by the most famous touring acts and installations worldwide, legendary MIDAS consoles such as the XL4 and Heritage H3000 quickly became industry standards.

MIDAS has earned their impeccable reputation due to their no-compromise approach for audio and build quality and in particular for their Award-winning Mic Preamps which are considered by industry experts as the industry™s best sounding designs. Building on this legacy, the XR18 and PRO Series of Live Mixing Systems continue this great heritage of Award-winning audio quality.

Built-In Tri-Mode Wi-Fi Router
Designed for the ultimate in mobility, the XR18 comes with an integrated Wi-Fi module for direct control of your mixer™s functions “ without the need to setup and configure an external router. The XR18 gives you the freedom to focus on your mix, while allowing you to move about the venue to experience what every part of the audience is hearing. Plus you can adjust live monitor wedges from the artist™s perspective “ or better yet, let them mix their own IEMs and floor monitors via their own tablets.

USB Connectivity and Stereo Recording
The front panel USB type-A connector makes the XR18 not only an amazingly powerful digital mixing solution, but also allows recording your live stereo tracks directly to attached USB flash media or hard drives. Dial in the perfect live mix with effects and zero-latency, while sending a dedicated stereo mix to your thumb drive for recording, or play background music in a break.

Revolutionary Auto-Mixing
When your application calls for a multiple-microphone setup, such as an onstage panel discussion, press conference or courtroom proceeding, etc., it can become a challenge to maintain so many open mics “ and preserve maximum gain and priority for the moderator.

Behringer's X AIR Gain Sharing technology can easily manage fully automated mixes with several live microphones. Based on the legendary Dan Dugan automix system, the XR18™s gain sharing paradigm automatically controls the levels of all selected microphones in real time, without any gating artifacts or noise modulation.

This function dramatically reduces the typical feedback, studio noise and comb filtering challenges that can occur when two, or more mics are in close proximity of each another. X AIR Gain Sharing technology provides a consistent system gain structure, even when multiple speakers are talking at the same time.

4 Onboard X32 Effects Engines
Equipped with the very same FX engines as the X32 Digital Mixing Console, the onboard virtual FX Rack provides access to four true-stereo (8 mono), multi-effects processors including delay, chorus, dynamics “ plus the XR18 can run production-quality, true-stereo reverbs concurrently with 31-band EQ on the main and aux buses, all without the need for any additional hardware.

You can select any combination of high-end simulations of legendary studio effects, such as the Lexicon 480L and PCM70, as well as the EMT250 and Quantec QRS reverbs. Onboard processing means your computer doesn™t have to do the heavy lifting during a mixing session with DAW plugins as the XR18 has a whole studio of FX under its hood.

Custom-designed, and physically modeled after some of the most iconic and sought after processors, all effects run inside the low-latency environment of the X32 mix engine, ensuring flawless performance, flexible routing and the end of cable faults forever.

High-End FX Racks at Your Finger Tips
The XR18 incorporates a vast collection of high-end FX racks available at a moment's notice. These effects emulate some of the most popular and sought after audio-processing effects coveted by top mixing engineers around the world. Choose from over 20 effects each fully capable performers in both live and studio environments.

100-Band RTA for all Channel/ Bus EQ™s
The XR18 includes a high-resolution 100-band Real Time Analyzer (RTA), with full Bar and Spectrograph views. This high-resolution RTA displays the audio energy distribution in 100 frequency bands over time “ capturing a sonogram window of a full 10 seconds.

Switch between the Large RTA view, displaying any available signal in full screen resolution, or the Combined RTA view shown above each of the channel and bus EQ curves “ and see the results of your filtering choices. Additionally, the RTA can be displayed on top of the 31-band graphic EQs in the Main LR or Aux buses.

Uncompromised Channel Processing
The XR18 allows you to achieve the same incredible level of EQ finesse as the award-winning X32 thanks to its 100-band Real Time Analyzer, which is built into every input channel and bus EQ. Visual feedback built into the control app allows you to see and make fast, surgical adjustments to frequencies in need of a boost or a cut.

Every input channel also features Low-Cut, 4-band fully parametric EQ and the same Gate and Compressor dynamics suite found in the X32 “ with one very special addition; you can choose either Expert or Simple functionality. In Expert mode, you can drill down and get your hands on every nuance of your dynamics. Or, if you'e more of the plug-and-play type, Simple mode lets you either select from one of 4 carefully optimized presets “ or load your own channel templates. Add to this 40-Bit, floating-point DSP and you'll experience virtually "unlimited" dynamic range with no internal overload and near-zero overall latency.

In addition to the Main L/R bus for Front of House, 6 Aux buses are provided for dialing in the perfect monitor mixes, or creating a dedicated mix for your USB stereo recording “ complete with inserts, dynamics, and either a 6-band parametric EQ or 31-band graphic EQ. And if all these outstanding EQ options put a smile on your face, you™ll love it even more when we tell you that 100-band RTAs are available for these, too!

MIDI In/Out for Live Performance Controllers
The physical MIDI I/O port on the XR18 mixer can also be used for connecting external MIDI controllers, such as our X-TOUCH or B-CONTROL products, for dynamically controlling channel level, muting and panorama adjustments during your performance. And since the full-featured XR18 also supports the Mackie Control protocol, you easily apply comprehensive remote editing and parameter adjustments via any compatible MIDI devices.

X AIR EDIT (PC/Mac/Linux)
If your application requires a computer for BEHRINGER X AIR mixer remote control, the X AIR EDIT was made just for you. Simply copy and launch the free software with your computer, connect to the mixer via its built-in Ethernet (LAN) connector using a Cat 5 cable (max. 100 m length) “ and all X AIR mixer functions are instantly mirrored on your computer screen. Since your PC screen is larger than the one on your telephone, X AIR EDIT allows you to open and scale more app windows, such as for routing or FX editing “ letting you decide how much information you need at a glance. All touch screens are supported, or you can use a mouse to adjust your physical mixer™s settings. You can even control multiple mixers remotely from a single computer, or create several strategically placed computer stations to control the same mixer. With X AIR EDIT, your PC, Linux or Mac computer becomes your virtual mixer “ both live and in the studio!

X AIR for iPad
Front of House is wherever you and your iPad are “ thanks to the new X AIR app for iPad. Simply download the free app to your iPad, set the BEHRINGER X AIR mixer to Access Point mode and connect your iPad to the XR18 network that will show up. After launching the X AIR app, select the mixer image, and all of your X AIR mixer™s settings can now be adjusted directly from your iPad. You can save your favorite scenes, and load previously stored scenes and presets to/from your iPad or customize your channel layout “ all with the support of innovative drag ™n™ drop functionality.

Download the free X AIR App for iPad from the Apple App Store.

X AIR for Android
Designed specifically for all Android mobile devices (2.2 or higher), which includes tablets and smartphones, the app can be used in one of two modes: full access mixing mode; or bound to a specific aux bus for creating personal monitor mixes remotely on BEHRINGER X AIR mixers. Using this free and easy to learn app, each performer can use their Android device to dial-in the perfect personal IEM or wedge monitor mix, without having to consult the audio engineer for assistance. With the X AIR MIX App for Android, personal monitor mixing just got a whole lot more personal “ both live and in the studio! But it doesn™t stop there “ in full access mixing mode, the app provides control over all channel processing including the RTA overlay, effects editing, storing/loading scenes or presets, and much more “ whether you'e running a 12" tablet or a 5" smartphone.

I've reluctantly owned a few Behringer products in the past and I've had some fail miserably and some be perfect. Xenyx 2442 failed in what I'm guessing was just a general good case of bad vibes. Anyway, i picked this up from GC and after a quick trial at my house, and took it to its first gig within two hours of purchase. To top that off with 3 custom wedge mix's and stereo foh without any tutorials or manual, I was very pleased. So were the guys. This out sounded our usual Mackie board and we hardly got to any of its parlor tricks like comp and the plethora of fx. In a small rack box on the floor with a power conditioner, we used it just like a stage snake.
I brought it home and put some condensers in the mix and it really impressed me. It's a reasonable price for how gouged it made my rack look. Goodbye outboard fx and EQ. GOODBYE DAW. I got some cables to sell now. The software could be better for fail safes and realtime purposes but it's still cheaper than a person us? It does eat battery and ram. One thing about behringer, they make quality parts but put it in a subquality container. I hope this thing can handle the road and the juice. Anyway, behringer done good on this one. Very happy.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

A few months ago, I was looking for a graphic EQ for my analog mixer. Even an inexpensive 31 band stereo GEQ is $200, and good ones are more like $400. For the same money, I could get an XR16, which is a combination mixer / snake / GEQ, with gate, parametric EQ, and compression available for all input channels. I almost bought that one. I would still buy it in a heartbeat.

Instead, I went for the XR18. It and its flatter brother, the X18, have 16 full-featured Midas-designed digital preamps (vs the XR16's 8 Midas and 8 "regular" inputs), so I can plug anything in anywhere. The XR18 also functions as an 18 channel USB audio (and USB-to-MIDI) interface for my computer, if I want to do multitrack recording; and it provides for future pro-level individual monitor mixes. Even without going full-tilt on monitors, the XR18 has 6 extra auxiliary outputs which can be used individually or in stereo pairs.
It's also controllable with just about any computer -- Windows, Mac, iPad, or Android.
If I had to come up with a negative for this box, there would be two, but these are nit-picks: (1) the built-in Wi-Fi router is not terribly strong (but you can attach your own, or use wired Ethernet); and (2) since it uses its USB port to connect to a computer, it lacks the onboard USB recording available with the XR-12 and -16 models. Neither of those negatives is enough to cost it even one point, though.

Many users will find that the XR-16 sacrifices little -- only 8 microphone inputs, only 4 aux outputs, and no mixing bus for individual monitor mixers -- and it gains onboard recording, at a little over half the price of the 18. That's no slouch either!

Put simply, I love this beastie. My next mixer will probably be an XR16, and I will probably never buy another analog mixer.

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

ABSOLUTELY BUY THIS!! We gig twice a month and this piece of equipment is better than $3000 units. I have mixed with many boards and this thing sounds incredible! Imagine taking an IPAD....no more snake to run...no more front of house to set up. Wireless control for each musicians mix? Say What...Amazing! No interruption in connection on the wireless. I have been EXTREMELY HAPPY with this unit and the Midas amps are incredible. Great FX's processors built in. 18 inputs....6 monitors outs...hard connected just in case someone trips over a XLR cable. USB....and MIDI? What...yes sir. The APP for this little monster is the best I've seen even for $3000 units. This thing BLOWS the competition away. Don't be fearful of the price....this thing is absolutely the best investment you'll ever make. Good for getting the band together to practice....save you mix scenes on the fly...take snap shots and record 16 channels simultaneously. live....What? Yes sir...I'm in love with this thing. Don't buy anything else...we have spent countless thousands for gear half this good. Just take an IPAD and you're mixing front of house with a breeze. Oh...and if you build your tracks in the studio and want to play those live and have the band play along? What....Yes sir....easy to do with this monster. Sounds Amazing....Trust me....use it one time and you'll be so impressed you'll wonder why you ever bought anything else. Set up time is literally cut in half.

I love this thing. It is a game changer. Only issue is that it doesn't have a master volume knob on the unit- so if ur feedback starts going crazy, you better hope ur ipad didn't just shut off from low battery or switch wifi connection, etc. Other than that, i'm all about this mixer. It's a workhorse, sounds incredible, compact, and you don't need long cables or a snake cuz it can be on stage with band while you mix from anywhere you want. The future of live mixing is here

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

I used this for the first time at a small venue with a 4 piece band. We mic'd the kick drum, e guiltar, a guitar, 3 vocals, sampler, and DI bass. It worked flawlessly. The ipad never lost connection. However, I do advise to set the "sleep" to "never". This way, it'll never disconnect, or go black on you, when you need to adjust settings quickly. I haven't had a chance to dive into the depth of the effects, but there are MANY to choose from. The best part of this setup is that you don't need a sound guy! We save great money and still have a Pro sounding rig. I matched this unit up with 2 x QSC K12's on a stick for mains, as the venue was too small to need subs. I had 3 x QSC K10's for monitors, plus my in-ear setup behind the drums. The most impressive part of this, was how quiet the in-ear mix was. It sounds NO different than our X32. Look at it this way: You can buy a 16 channel mixer, case, rack, etc and take up half of the back of your compact SUV. Or, buy this unit that's no bigger than a shoe-box. You now have a chance to fit an entire PA in your small SUV. Good bye trailer, Tahoe, Suburban, gas-guzzler!!

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

I'm not a musician and I've never played an instrument. The only things I know about bands is they prefer cash over checks, and they like beer! Last Saturday I pulled the trigger on the Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital. That same night a 9 piece band with no sound guy or mixer came to play, 2 drum sets, 2 horns, all together 12 inputs. I ran sound by myself! Zero experience! I will not lie and say I didn't make my mistakes, I had no clue how to send sound to the aux monitors, and by hooking up the sub to bus 3 so I had no deep bass. The first few songs I got dirty looks from the band, and no one was happy the monitors were not working. The sound on the floor was fine, the crowd was happy, but the band couldn't hear themselves. Little by little I started to think things out and had everything working by the end of the first set. Monitors worked, sub booming, and musicians moderately happy. I stayed basic, no effects, no gates or compressors, which at the time was foreign to me. At 1:45 AM the band walked off the stage to congratulate me. 200 customers were happy, band was happy, and as the owner I was ecstatic!!
Kudos to Guitar center North Charleston SC, and a job well done to Behringer!! Your X AIR XR18 Digital is amazing. Even for a first timer. BTW Behringer, thanks also for informative and easy to understand videos on YouTube!!

Comments about Behringer X AIR XR18 Digital Rackmount Mixer:

Very happy.
