Good Direct Box Value

I initially purchased this direct box to allow me to plug my Roland AC-60 amp into the mic level inputs at church. The AC-60 has line-level XLR outputs and does not have a pad. The GI100's -20 db pad worked well for this application (another -20 db pad is also on board for a total of -40 db attenuation). Later I purchased a Guild Peregrine acoustic-electric and was so happy with the guitar tone that I began plugging directly into the GI100 without an amp or effects. The tone is very good though I actually thought there was too much bass (most others have complained of too little). Unlike the Jensen transformer containing direct boxes, this DI does not automatically attenuate the signal by -12 db. So it is full strength unless you engage the pad. However I would have preferred a -10 db pad and -20 db pad instead of two -20 db pads, because the pre-amp on the Peregrine is a little weak and I am either keeping the volume maxed out or at level 1. A -10 and -20 pad would have given the unit a little more flexibility. A continuously variable knob could have made this unit perfect. I have not used the cab simulator live and it does add noise. For guitar I do think this model is slightly simpler than the DI-100 as well. Despite the shortcomings the box is a solid value, easily as functional as the more expensive boxes out there. I also own a BBE DI-1000 and a Demeter Tube Direct, and while there are tonal variations, this unit holds it's own, particularly when clean reproduction is desired.

not too good

I have had this box, it worked for about 1 1/2 not useing it very often. then it gave out. The -db buttons were causeing a problem. they would get touched and the unit stoped working. Avoid this. I own a behringer sound system and it works great the di is Junk.
