Overview

The neck shape and 634mm scale length of the SLG200S continue the design legacy of conventional acoustic guitars, while its ultra-slim body is perfect for players of both acoustic and electric instruments.

Sound by SRT Powered
SRT Powered is a new system designed to recreate the body resonance of an acoustic guitar in a bodiless guitar. Yamaha developed SRT Powered, collaborating with recording artists to create a system tailored to the unique properties of the new SLG body and modelled after the tones of a high-end Yamaha acoustic guitar captured using a carefully selected microphone in a professional recording studio environment. By actually reproducing the sound of an acoustic guitar—right down to its natural sustain and decay—Yamaha lets guitarists experience the genuine body resonance, body tone and ambience of an acoustic guitar.

SRT Powered sound can even be mixed with the sound from the instrument's piezo pickups, allowing guitarists to be even more flexible in their creative endeavors. Because the SLG can virtually reproduce the sound of a guitar recorded with a microphone, players are free from complicated procedures involved in mic-ing up a guitar when recording at home or in other settings.

Functionality
Connect to an external music player to enjoy music playback, enhance your playing with a range of authentic effects, or plug in headphones to enjoy playing in privacy—the SLG offers a variety of functions that make playing even more enjoyable. What's more, SLG come with a built-in precision chromatic tuner, compatibility with both battery- and AC power, and a range of other user-friendly features.

Features

  • Authentic plugged-in sound by SRT Powered
  • Super-compact, collapsible construction
  • Ultra-quiet performance
  • Unique, striking looks
  • Slim body like an electric guitar
  • Variety of functions which make players enjoy without becoming bored

Comments about Yamaha SLG200S Steel String Silent Guitar:

A friend has the previous "Silent" (steel string) guitar. I thought it was a fun toy, but didn't quite take to it at the time. I finally got around to watching a YouTube video for the SLG200S, and instantly wanted one.

As received out of the box, the fit and finish were decent. The neck is really pretty good. The frets were well-dressed and finished, but there were two things I couldn't let pass: (1) the cheap plastic nut and saddle, and (2) the first and third frets were high. Also, the nut had the 1st-fret spacing at 0.050", which is way too high for me, at least. I didn't want to modify a brand-new guitar, (for obvious reasons) but since I had no reason to believe a different guitar would be any better, I decided to fix it. I made a bone nut for it from a pre-shaped blank, and slotted it initially for 0.030". I fixed the 1st and 3rd frets, but haven't as yet replaced the plastic saddle. (my bone blanks are a little short, but I do have a compensated Tusk saddle that will work with some machining)

Now we get to the good part. After the initial fixes, setup work and a set of D'Addario 12-53 Phosphor Bronze strings, this little guy plays like a dream! The intonation is spot-on, and I love the sound. It doesn't sound at all like my Taylor 918e, (what does) but it has a beautiful tone of its own. Accurate, clean, very pleasing. After initial stretching, it took about 15 minutes for the strings to settle down. Since then it stays in tune amazingly well. I'm as fussy as it gets about intonation and tune, and the SLG200 gets the gold star.

The built-in effects are nice. Both reverbs sound good, although it would be nice to be able to crank them back a bit. If I record the SLG200S I probably won't use the built-in effects. The electronics aren't dead quiet, but the hiss is down far enough that it would only bother me when recording very quiet passages at high gain - something I do only occasionally. You wouldn't even notice it in a live gig.

Great sound and value.

Comments about Yamaha SLG200S Steel String Silent Guitar:

I bought this as a practice guitar to use especially when my partner was home. We have a small house. It does not disturb her even when she is in the next room. And the feel and tone are exceptional. I have a 25+ year old Martin that I love. Never thought I'd say this but the tones from this system are compatible. Plus you have lots of ways to vary the tones, making practice less boring.

Comments about Yamaha SLG200S Steel String Silent Guitar:

After touring with a full-size acoustic guitar for so long, and having to do too many fly-dates with it, I had to either accept that at some point I was going to wind up with a case full of splinters, or find a better alternative. The silent guitar is that alternative. It plays and sounds great. Would I record with it over my good dreadnought? No, but live through a PA it sounds fantastic. The on-board effects and tuner are decent. Nothing fantastic, but do the job if needed. It loses a star, however, because the strap buttons (which also double as the top frame set-screws) tend to loosen when using a strap. I'll have to find a way to keep that from happening in the future. Otherwise, though, this is my new touring acoustic, and I will accept the small infractions while making my travel life way easier.

Bought this guitar to up my practice time without having to go into another room for fear of disturbing my wife. There is still a small amount of sound that can be heard but my wife says it does not bother her. Pleasantly surprised at the sound when using headphones. I like the modernistic look, my wife likes the classic look of my flat tops. I do not travel with this guitar, but it does make a great travel guitar with a small footprint while creating excellent sound. So happy with this I also picked up the nylon version.

traded a nice classical guitar for this guitar. I needed a guitar that I could practice with while spending time with wife watching tv. What I got was a pro guitar that feels great right out of the box. Its louder than my SRT200N, but that is to be expected. I can record truly pro sounding guitar without making sure that the house is quiet, ( mic pics up everything)!!
These guitars are a real mind shift change for me and I dint think I'll go back to traditional acoustic guitars
