Comments about Yamaha Revstar RS502 Electric Guitar:
Once, maybe twice in a lifetime a guitar manufacturer hits is out of the park. Yamaha did it in the 1970s with the SG2000, and they did it again with the Revstar RS502. First off, the craftsmanship is incredible - beautiful binding, finish, frets - all impeccable. Big jumbo frets!! The custom wound P90 pickups produce beautiful shimmering highs, sweet clear mids, and crip lows. Overall a much clearer sound than my LP Junior Special. The volume and tone pots are truly outstanding - volume swells are very easy, and rolling back the volume creates a ton of wonderful tonal options. Pull up the tone nob on the bridge pickup and this baby starts to sound like a Telecaster at it's nastiest - from hard rock grit to country twang. The bridge plays no small part in the tone as well. Much more versatile than my LP. Stays in tune very nicely, which is not surprising because a) the tuners are excellent, b) the angle between the neck and the headstock is minimal, and c) the headstock tapers in for the D and G strings to lessen the angel of the string between the nut and the tuner. A lot has been written on these topics with respect to LPs and tuning issues. Yamaha has solved this. I play literally for hours bending the strings like crazy and it stays in tune - such a joy to play!!! Is there any down sides? Okay, sure, here they are: 1. Both pickups share the same volume and tone controls and 2. The finish is matte rather than high gloss. So you, if you need P90s and a flashy tiger striped maple top, look elsewhere. Check out the videos online. If you are in the market for a P90 guitar, do yourself a favor - try out some of the big brand name guitars and then play a RS502. You will notice the difference. I suspect that like Yamaha's SG2000, which have increased in value, these guitars will be dearly coveted in the years to come. Obviously, at this price these are an absolutely ridiculous deal.
