Overview

Part of the VTX Series, the Valvetronix VT40X is a perfect combination of innovation and tradition. These amps combine sophisticated modeling technology with a multi-stage tube pre-amp circuit to reproduce the unique distortion, touch sensitivity, and the response that is characteristic of classic tube amps. Its unique modeling algorithm actually recreates the analog circuits of some of the most coveted tube amplifiers and allows you to adjust the gain structure and bias of the internal tube in real time. Also, when using certain models, the amp can be switched between Class A and Class AB operation.

The effects section has also been revamped and now offers 12 classic effects based on some of the most iconic stompboxes of all time. These amps also feature a USB port, which allows you to connect the amplifier to their PC, Mac, or iOS device (with optional USB Camera Adapter Kit) and manage programs and customize amps and effects by using VOX’s Tone Room software. The Tone Room software allows for deep editing of all of the great amps and effects so you can carefully craft your sound, which can then be saved as one of the eight customizable programs. There is also a built-in tuner, an AUX-in jack for jamming along with recorded music, and a headphone jack for silent practice.

And, with its British racing green color palette, this versatile little rocker provides plenty of eye candy to match its tonal mastery.

Impressive speaker emulators quality and USB port is awesome

Comments about Vox Limited Edition Valvetronix VT40X BRG 40W 1x10 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I just loved this amp. The sound is fantastic and amp emulators are high quality stuff.

I have also a VT20+ and I could feel a very clear quality improvement on amp emulators, BUT I missed some effects from the VT+ series.

There a few really cool effects on VT+ series that were NOT included on the VTX. I don't know why, maybe because they preferred to improved quality and sacrifice some effects (like pitch shifter, octave, u-vibe, G4 Rotary, auto-wah).

The USB port let me use my Windows tablet to program, store and control the amp. I use it on live performance and found easier to change the setups and even the effect parameters and volume. I have the Vox foot switch, but found the tablet to be useful instead.

By the way, there are MORE effect parameters if you use a tablet/computer to program comparing to the amp buttons.

But VOX added a few more cool and high quality distortions and reverbs. The lack of the mentioned effects are the only reason for a 4* instead of 5*. Well, I choose the Limited Edition because the retro green color is much more fun and beautiful than the black one.

Retro colors have a lot to do with VOX brand.

Best Tube Amp Emulations So Far

Comments about Vox Limited Edition Valvetronix VT40X BRG 40W 1x10 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

First of all, I'm a tube amp snob. I hate modeling amps, and have always felt their tone was lacking enough to warrant never using them for a live show. I also knew that it was only a matter of time before the technology got good enough for that to change. That time is apparently now.

I have not yet used the software app for this amp, and I probably will sometime in the future, but for now all I've done is use the knobs and buttons on the amp. That being said, this amp is set up for someone who is used to tube amps. It's incredibly easy and intuitive to use. Learn just a couple of editing tricks, and you can easily and quickly program the amp's user program buttons. Also, if you need to change a parameter on the fly, it's just a matter of turning the appropriate knob (effects require pushing a button and then turning the knob, but they're really easy to change as well). Saving the change you just made is easy as well, though it does require a bit of attention so as to not inadvertently erase a different tone. Ease of use definitely gets five stars.

It's the tones, though, that really sold me. Most of the tones I'm using are about 98-99% of the original, which in a live setting is plenty accurate. Being able to switch from a fender-y clean with spacious reverb to a Vox AC-style crunch with a little spring reverb to an Orange-style lead with just a tad of hall reverb to a Marshall-style lead with delay and reverb by just hitting one footswitch is so nice, especially because all of those tones sound so very, very good. The effects are set up like a 3 pedal chain, and while you can change each effect and each effects parameters, these are primarily designed for the guitarist who uses effects judiciously. In other words, if you're the sort of guitarist who runs through many effects at once or who wants really programmable effects, this probably isn't the amp for you. But, for great amp tones and really good basic effects, this amp cannot be beat.

Ughh, defective would-be awesome amp

Comments about Vox Limited Edition Valvetronix VT40X BRG 40W 1x10 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

I tried out this amp after researching several mid-range tube modeling amps and for the price I thought this one was the one to beat with the wide variety in tones and decent on-board effects. The Tone Room app really helps in zeroing in on tones to suit your individual tastes and style. The big drawbacks for me was the defective input jack that died coincidentally the day I got an email asking for me to review the amp.

The amp sounds great with the on-board effects and even better with my pedal-board but a caveat for this model is the rather unusual power supply. The supply is unlike any on an amp that I have seen. It simply does not appear very sturdy as it is not the typical three-prong female connection that plugs into the back of the amp but is a single small jack like that of a higher end effects processor or a laptop than a tube amp.

I sincerely hope the replacement unit is not defective, otherwise I would recommend for the quality sound, versatility, compact-nature, and sharp aesthetics.

Versatile, Affordable Sonic Fun Machine

By Steve

Comments about Vox Limited Edition Valvetronix VT40X BRG 40W 1x10 Guitar Modeling Combo Amp:

The VT40X is an extremely versatile, dynamic and affordable tone machine. I've been spending a lot of time with it - with the USB port and the free ToneRoom software, you can get under the hood and tweak a lot. It's a super-inspirational amp, which is a good quality in any piece of gear. The amp models and effects are very well done and easy to tweak.

It's not really marketed as a "gigging" amp - more of a practice amp. And at that, it really excels - to the point where I wish it had a few more capabilities so I could gig with it! For instance, there are only two banks of 4 stompbox effects, and one bank of 4 reverbs, for a total of 12 effects - only 3 of which can be used at once. There are no expression pedal-type effects like wah, which makes sense because there's no input for an expression pedal. Also, there is no direct out for studio recording (the USB port is only for editing… you could use the headphone output to send to a board, but it's not ideally suited for that). But those are minor complaints that would only prevent me from gigging with it because I use more effects than the VT40X offers.

But if you only needed a few choice effects and didn't need many bells and whistles, the VT40X is be a great amp for studio, practice, and smaller gigs (it is extremely loud when cranked). At around $250, it's an incredible value for all the sonic fun you get.

I'm very happy with my purchase (especially in the limited-edition British Racing Green color!) and will recommend it to friends.
