Before the JEM, Steve Vai played a hand built instrument he called the green monster. During a show he pulled the whammy bar and ripped it right out of the guitar. In need of an instrument to finish the tour with he borrowed one from his guitar player. He really liked the sound and feel of the instrument but wanted to incorporate some familiar features. After co-designing the specs with Ibanez the JEM came to life and was launched at the 1987 NAMM show. The JEM features a 5 piece maple/walnut neck, basswood body, 6105 frets, rosewood fingerboard, Lo-Profile Edge tremolo, Dimarzio DP158 neck pickup, DiMarzio DPS1 middle pickup, and DiMarzio EVO2 bridge pickup..
