Taylor has created a new category of acoustic guitar with the 2021 GT Urban Ash Grand Theater. It packs the tone of a full-size instrument into a more compact, inviting form. The result is a guitar that’s incredibly fun to play, with a distinctive sonic personality worthy of any pro player’s toolbox

Body Shape
The enormous popularity of the GS Mini over the last decade informed the design of the Grand Theater. Rather than pursuing a better GS Mini, Taylor master luthier Andy Powers designed a new guitar entirely: different body and neck dimensions, with new bracing, made with solid wood. It preserves the playing comfort of a smaller guitar while also producing a fuller-sounding voice. And its compact form makes it ultra-responsive to a light touch. Between the unique body dimensions, scale length, nut width and bracing, it introduces not just a new body style, but a new guitar category in both feel and sound.

Tonewoods
First introduced on Taylor’s Builder’s Edition 324ce, urban ash is a tonewood Taylor has embraced both for its sustainability and tone. Responsibly sourced from Shamel ash trees in need of removal from municipal areas in Southern California, its tonal properties rival those of high-quality Honduran mahogany, serving up a pleasing midrange warmth. 

Together with C-Class bracing and the compact dimensions of the body and neck, the spruce top is responsive to a light touch yet capable of impressive tonal output, offering players a dynamic and expressive musical palette to explore.

The Grand Theater gives Taylor a platform to introduce another fretboard wood, eucalyptus, that offers great potential alongside ebony. Its comparable weight and density are ideal for holding frets, and Taylor is able to source it responsibly either from plantation-grown trees or through its Urban Forestry initiative with West Coast Arborists, Inc., in Southern California. 

Internal Bracing
The 2021 GT Urban Ash Grand Theater acoustic guitar sports a unique Taylor bracing system called C-Class bracing. The “C” is for "cantilevered". This bracing architecture borrows some of the functional benefits of Taylor’s V-Class bracing, including more stability, yielding impressive volume, sustain and intonation that sonically helps the guitar punch above its weight and sing with clarity and balance across the tonal spectrum.

    I bought this Guitar and then returned it despite it being clearance. it has a 3 inch crack/split on top

    I find the body size to be perfect for me at 5'4" and the tone and sustain are terrific. The low E really rings out very well and sounds like a bigger body guitar. The highs are excellent as expected from a Taylor. I also really like the idea of using reclaimed trees for the body. I am not an expert but this works well for my intermediate skill and purely personal enjoyment of playing songs I grew up with. The case is also exceptional.

    I've read every review that's out there on this particular guitar and was anxious to try one out. Everyone's taste differs and everyone knows a particular sound they are searching for. The size is perfect for me, I like smaller bodied guitars and attempt mostly fingerstyle playing. The Taylor playability was there, however, the very first sounds it produced were "in your face" BRIGHT!!!! I even had the store employee play for me and "bright" was still dominate!!!! I compared it to the Taylor American Dream AD22e...just a slight size difference and a sound that was "sweet" to me. And of course mahogany is going to produce a sound with far less edge! I immediately fell in love with the AD22e. There is a $200 price difference due to the AD22e coming with electronics. I purchased the AD22e and absolutely love it!! If you're looking for Taylor playability and a bright sound in a small bodied guitar the Gt Urban Ash might be the guitar for you. If you want less "edge" in a smaller bodied guitar you must try the AD22e. It is well worth the additional $200!!!!

    An electric guitar player here and especially short scale electrics. I have always looked for an acoustic and though I have had a few I liked I really never connected with them. I have to say the Taylor GT is a great guitar and I keep picking it up and playing it everyday since I purchased. If you are like me and lean more to playing electrics I have to say give this acoustic a try and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

    Just picked up this guitar and I'm blown away. It's small body is packed full of the bright sound that you would expect from a taylor. The neck is insanely comfortable and perfect for long practice / jam sessions. The case that comes with it is also very high quality. Bravo!
