PAF style humbucker with a ton of rude Texas attitude for a neck tone that stays warm and focused.

Seymour Duncan

collapse expand iconDescription

Seymour Duncan's country-fried SH-PG1 Pearly Gates humbucker pickups transform any Les Paul-style guitar into a classic rock outlaw. The Pearly Gates neck captures all the mojo of the original neck pickup from Billy Gibbons’ 1959 Les Paul. It is a P.A.F. with a unique tonal variation that provides more midrange than typical humbuckers from that time. The result is a neck pickup that cuts through with stronger tailored mids, but still has the open and airy treble attack of the Alnico 2 bar magnet.

Combined with a warm, spongy low-end, this SH-PG1 Pearly Gates pickup is great for both rhythm and lead playing. Seymour discovered Billy’s bridge pickup had slightly more output than most P.A.F.s, which helped to give it the extra drive that make this pickup so special. The Alnico 2 bar magnet keeps the high end sounding airy but focused, and the mid-range emphasis gives it a unique Texas sizzle. It really has a growl all its own and will help to bring any humbucker-equipped instrument to life.

Hand built in Seymour Duncan's Santa Barbara, CA factory, the SH-PG1 Pearly Gates vintage output humbucker pickups use an Alnico 2 bar magnet, nickel silver bottom plate, 4-conductor lead wire for multiple wiring options, and are vacuum wax potted for squeal-free performance. The Pearly Gates bridge is available in both standard humbucker spacing. As with all Seymour Duncan P.A.F.-style humbuckers, every Pearly Gates is wound on Seymour’s original Leesona winding machine from the early Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for that unmistakable vintage mojo. The Pearly Gates vintage output passive humbucker pickups pack ton of focused midrange attitude with raw Texas punch and sizzle.

I put this pickup in the bridge position of my ESP LTD EC-256 guitar, with an SD classic '59 in the neck. Both pickups are great, but this one is really something else. It's hot, stays clear with distortion, and has a really throaty midrange which makes it sound like Billy Gibbons (ZZ top) or Gary Rossington (Skynyrd). Perfect for blues rock, classic rock, or country/southern rock. Highly recommend.

Bright without being shrill. Vintage but still enough guts for rock. Beautiful sounding warm pickup with a well defined top end. I had a mini pearly gates in a cheap Squire classic vibe and I didn't like it. I thought it sounded flat. I put it in a Suhr Modern and holy cow! I honestly think that's the mark of a good pickup. It really lets the qualities of the guitar shine thru. Great pickup.

Put this in the bridge position on my Fender Strat. It is a very bright pickup (500K pots for volume and tone with an orange drop capacitor). I play through a Marshall DSL 40. Again, this pickup is a top-end screamer...almost ear piercing. I will re-think keeping this in my Strat.
