Overview

With the 30-watt Blues Cube Hot - BOSS DRIVE Special - guitarists can tap into Roland’s acclaimed Tube Logic tone in a compact combo amp. Equipped with a custom vintage-voiced 12-inch speaker and a poplar tone-wood designed cabinet, the BOSS DRIVE Special is capable of delivering powerful and rich tube feel at any volume. The BOSS DRIVE Special’s design philosophy began by faithfully incorporating the rich tonal experience of the revered British KT-66-era tube amp in every way, from guitar input to speaker output. Road-tested and fine-tuned with feedback from top players, and renowned British amplifier experts, the gig-ready BOSS DRIVE Special delivers the sweet, magical tone and satisfying feel that makes a great guitar amp a highly expressive musical instrument.

Musical, Highly Responsive Amp Tones With Tube Logic
Warm, bouncy, responsive, dynamic, elastic—these are all terms that guitarists use to describe the satisfying experience of playing their favorite tube amps. Thanks to Roland’s Tube Logic, these words can be applied to the BOSS DRIVE Special as well. Dramatically evolved from the first-generation sound of the original Blues Cube amps from the '90s, today’s Tube Logic accurately provides the complex, highly interactive behavior of classic tube designs in meticulous detail, providing the magical “it” factor that takes a guitar amp from a simple sound system to a living, breathing musical instrument. Great feel, distortion control with touch and volume, bloom, sparkle, power supply “sag,” and more—everything that players love about a finely tuned vintage tube amp is present in abundance with the BOSS DRIVE Special.

Performance-Ready Amp for Pro Players
Ready for live playing, the BOSS DRIVE Special is equipped with 30 watts of power, plus a custom 12-inch speaker that’s been specially designed for maximum tonal response with Tube Logic. The open-back cabinet features poplar plywood construction, which offers acoustically vibrant tone for solo or group performances.

Clean to Crunch with One Knob Control
The BOSS DRIVE Special controls the tone with just one knob from clean to crunch. Starting from clean, natural tube fullness and bite, as the volume is cranked the crunch sound provides a range of grit flavors from mild to aggressive. In addition, Boost and Tone switches shape the character. The Boost switch produces a thick and natural tube crunch sound, while the Tone switch extends the bass and treble. And just like a vintage tube amp, the BOSS DRIVE Special loves stompboxes, allowing you to further shape your personal sound by hitting the amp’s front end with your favorite gain pedals.

Wide-Open Sound at Any Volume
Every tube-amp player knows that you really need to turn up the volume and push the output tubes to get the amp to sing at its best. The downside is that the sound simply becomes too loud for playing anywhere but the biggest stages—though that’s certainly never stopped guitarists from trying! With Tube Logic, the BOSS DRIVE Special authentically delivers the complex distortion characteristics of output tubes and their interaction with the output transformer, with the sound getting richer and the feel becoming more dynamically responsive as the overall volume is increased. But with the BOSS DRIVE Special’s variable Power Control, you’re able to enjoy this musical, cranked-up tone while matching the volume to any situation, from recording to rehearsals to nightclub gigs and beyond.

Maintenance-Free and Easy on Your Back
With its modern approach, the BOSS DRIVE Special eliminates the big drawbacks found in all tube amps powerful enough for stage playing—they’re extremely heavy, prone to damage through vibration, and require frequent tube replacement and other costly maintenance to keep them going strong. In contrast, the BOSS DRIVE Special is basically maintenance-free, and has been carefully designed to reduce weight in every area that doesn’t affect the tone. With the BOSS DRIVE Special, you’re able to enjoy great tube sound at every gig, but with much easier load-in and no actual tubes to worry about!

Effects, Foot Control and Direct Recording via USB
The BOSS DRIVE Special features onboard reverb, and the rear panel is equipped with a footswitch jack for remote switching of Boost and Tone functions. And with the USB jack, it’s simple to capture the BOSS DRIVE Special’s rich tones directly into your favorite computer recording applications.

Comments about Roland BC-HOT-BKM Blues Cube Hot - BOSS DRIVE Special 30W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I'd played the original Blues Cube Hot briefly and liked it, but like the Tweed it emulates, it can get kind of flabby on the bottom end. The second one, with a Vox sound, was barely available in the US anyway, but wasn't of interest to me - I'm not a Vox chime guy. But this Marshall sound is right in my wheelhouse. I gravitate to older Marshall sounds with modeling amps and this sounds a lot better than any of those. When I saw one in my local GC, I had to take it home and try it. Within about 5 minutes I knew it was a keeper. No frills, just great sound and pretty easy to dial in.

Much more crunch when you hit the boost button than with the original BCH, which is good - it's a great overdriven sound. The only downside is there's a pretty big jump in volume when you hit the boost button, so it's hard to use it like a two-channel amp. You really have to be ready to adjust the volume when you engage the boost, so not great for a footswitch. I often use an OD pedal so I can balance the volume of the clean and driven sounds. But the amp's boost sounds so good that sometimes I just set up my sound with the boost engaged, and then just back off on the guitar volume to clean it up a little bit for playing rhythm and cleaner parts. I'm playing with a strat and a semi-hollow body and both sound incredible, though definitely with different settings.

I'm mostly a home player these days and live in a small condo, so the power control is great. I rarely play on anything but 0.5 watts, sometimes 5 watts for more clean headroom. When I lived in a larger place with a big basement, I had a tube amp and could run it pretty hot, but that wouldn't work here. I wouldn't say this sounds exactly like tubes, but is sounds as good on it's own terms. This is probably all the amp I'll need for a good long time.

Comments about Roland BC-HOT-BKM Blues Cube Hot - BOSS DRIVE Special 30W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this amplifier after trading in some gear I no longer used. I already owned the standard Blues Cube Hot and the British EL84 Modified version, of which there was a limited run available in the U.S.

I'm not sure what is "BOSS Drive" about a KT66-equipped JTM45 (or "Bluesbreaker") combo, but I don't care. This amp sounds great, and at any volume between "wife is reading nearby" to "make my ears bleed in the home studio." It has the rich clean and driven cut you'd expect from the JTM, although it obviously sounds a but different through a smaller cabinet with a single 12" speaker. To a microphone, though, it's awfully close.

It's just a great sound to my ears. I especially like how reactive these amps are to different guitars and pickups. There's no masking in these amps.

I've tried multiple amps that claim to nail the sounds of some of my favorites, but none really succeeded. The Blued Cube Hot amps, on the other hand, each succeed at hitting their targets.

Oh, and they all take pedals brilliantly, so no worries there.

Comments about Roland BC-HOT-BKM Blues Cube Hot - BOSS DRIVE Special 30W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I use this with a seven piece horn band. This is a really good value and with today's stage volumes, it's all I really need. Excellent tone and response. It is extremely tube-like with out the weight and maintenance. It's a must have for me.

Comments about Roland BC-HOT-BKM Blues Cube Hot - BOSS DRIVE Special 30W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I have had this amp for a week. I pre ordered as I also have a the first blues cube hot and like that amp. I run the drive special and the original hot together. Both amps are very touch sensitive and respond like the real thing when you turn up the volume. Plus the power scaling is so nice for playing at home. I get a great blend of Marshall and Fender sounds with these two amps. My Epiphone Elitist Les Paul, Road worn Stratocaster, and Gibson ES-335 all sound great through my rig. I would recommend this amp every day if you are looking for classic Marshall type crunch in a very small, well constructed, lightweight combo. Never having to spend money on tubes or worry about them failing at a gig is a great plus. The sounds from this blues cube are pretty close to the original in my estimation. It has been many years since I've played through the jtm 45 that this amp is based on, but the sounds are very good to my ears. For the price, probability, and construction you cannot go wrong.

Comments about Roland BC-HOT-BKM Blues Cube Hot - BOSS DRIVE Special 30W 1x12 Guitar Combo Amp:

I primarily use it in my home studio. Great variance of clean to dirt. Has that bark and bite of the early Marshall circuit. More drive available than the standard Hot, which I also have, and more of that upper-mid Marshall sting. The power settings mean I can get the same essential tone at conversational volumes on up to good and loud, without touching the volume or master controls, both of which shape the sound and response as well. The amp has bounce and responsiveness to pick attack and dynamics. Just a great sounding amp all the way around.
