Some software upgrades are largely an expansion of existing feature sets - more sounds, better sounds, more tracks, more export options, etc. - but some introduce more fundamental attributes that reflect milestones in development. Propellerhead's Reason 6.5 is one of those groundbreaking updates, and now includes a free upgrade to Reason 7!

Reason software has established itself as one of the major players in audio editing software for many reasons. Its ease of use that is predicated in part on its rackmount-style GUI, the quality of its sound libraries, its vast MIDI implementation and other attributes have won it an enormously loyal user base in the US and across the world. In 6.5, Propellerheads presents Rack Extensions, a bold fusion of what is great about plug-ins seamlessly integrated with what is great about Reason.

With Rack Extensions the Reason rack opens up to third party developers. This is not another plugin format “ Rack Extensions are full Reason rack citizens, giving you the same great experience as any other Reason device. Load them in Combinators, route cables on the back, automate all parameters, and experiment with the safety of undo.

Browse all Rack Extensions in the Propellerhead Shop and even download fully functional trial versions to load into your rack. Every Rack Extension you have purchased can be downloaded as many times as you need “ for both Mac and Windows “ and the latest version is never more than a click away.

In addition to third party developers for Rack Extensions, Propellerhead Software is also releasing their own Rack Extension devices for Reason 6.5 and Reason Essentials 1.5, notably Polar, an old school harmonizing and pitch-shifter effect with a host of modern tricks.

Use Polar for classic harmonizing, stereo-widening, and real time pitch-shifting, or experiment with buffer looping and audio freezing to create otherworldly effects. Load up Polar in the rack, and it will instantly make your sounds wider. Introduce slight pitch-shifting to make it even bigger. Turn the Shifters to add harmonics ” up to two octaves above ” or radically change the pitch down to two octaves below. Finish up your patch by turning on the filter, manipulated by the built-in LFO and envelope. If you are a singer, producer, guitarist or remixer who is looking for transparent pitch-shifting, creative ways of turning bland recordings into wide, evolving soundscapes ” or want to completely mangle a sound into an interesting mess, Polar brings all this and much more to your Reason rack.

Another of the first Rack Extension plug-ins for Reason 6.5 is Pulsar LGM-1, a dual-channel modulation powerhouse for the Reason rack. Propellerheads defines it as an LFO”but it' also a powerful little synth in its own right. For dedicated synth tweakers, Pulsar makes everything in the rack a little bit better. For back-of-the-rackophobes, it comes with patches containing everything from lush evolving pads to the grittiest wobble basses.

Need to add slow modulation to a filter, or alter the speed of a tremolo as you trigger new notes? Pulsar is up for any task. Turn up the Shuffle parameter to introduce some irregularity to your modulation. Smooth out sharp waveforms using Lag. Or go all-out bonkers and let LFO2 trigger the built-in envelope, set to change the rate of LFO2, and route the combined outputs of both LFOs to control the rate of LFO1.

When the rate is turned up, Pulsar transforms from low frequency oscillator to high-powered synth with plenty of character. The LFO waveforms in combination with lag and shuffle bring tons of tones”edgy and noisy. Other plug-ins for 6.5 Rack Extensions are ready to ship, including a breathtaking new piano called Radical Piano. Propellerheads gives you three basic pianos paired with the technology to make an infinite number of your own. Based on a custom blend between sampling technology and physical modeling algorithms, Radical Piano affords songwriters, producers, and sound designers an unprecedented level of control to craft a realistic piano that is unique.

With Radical Piano you can do things that are otherwise impossible, not only in multi-gigabyte sample libraries but even in the recording of actual acoustic pianos. Do you wish your close mic™d grand piano sounded just a little bit more like a vintage mono upright piano? Use the microphone blend to create a hybrid modeled sound. Route audio like a vocal through the jacks on the back of Radical Piano to hear it resonate the strings as if you had recorded piano and vocals together live.

What if with the turn of a knob you could transform the tonal characteristics of your piano, shifting from a soft intimate performance to a bright aggressive instrument that will cut through your mix? We™ve got that knob, and it' called œCharacter. Radical Piano will change the way you use pianos in your music by allowing you to imagine a piano in a real space and set about creating it yourself through intuitive controls. Or like you have done with synthesizers for years, you can listen to your favorite song and emulate the recording with uncanny accuracy. Perhaps even more impressive, the realism of Radical Piano will affect the way you play because it responds like a real piano to sustain pedal movement, key noise and velocity response.

With the Reason 6.5 release, Propellerheads is also launching the Propellerhead Shop. It will be the central location where users can try and buy Rack Extensions with single-click ease. The Rack Extension technology has been met with great enthusiasm from the developer community and the list of committed developers is growing by the day. Bang for the buck...

from Lansing Michigan

This program is very user friendly. There are countless tutorial vids on youtube from people within the company that show you tricks on every device they have available. Right out of the package Reason 6.5 gives you the ability to "hit the ground running".... link your midi controllers or other keyboards to the program and use pads along with keys to make drum patterns in Kong, sample with the NNXT, Kong, NN-19, or surf thru the endless capabilities by loading one of Reasons Synth devices. Finish an instrumental and want to put some vocals on it?? Just create a track and record! Its a fun program to say the least. Anyone who spends enough time in one program can make beautiful music.... Reason just makes it a little bit easier!

The Age of Reason

from USA/Argentina

Propellerhead has released this version of the program with a huge step integrating all the necessary things to work in a complete bundle. I know there is a cheaper version (Reason Essentials) but I decided to go for the big fish, and I will tell you I'm not regretting it at all. The first thing I noticed is that (at least in my case) the registering process was quite simple, I just copied the files and stuff, plugged my ignition key, typed my s/n and authorized it fast over the Internet. I could say having a USB port permanently busy for the ignition key is not very funny, more if I'm working on a laptop. But I had to connect a hub for needed USB devices. Right after that the funny part, hands on! I'm basically a guitar player, but in the way of someones working their own projects I can say I need a program that allows me not only to record and process my stuff, also a vastly library with almost endless possibilities, because the racks in Reason are built in a way the processor runs smoothly. I have to say I've heard some people complaining on some Re (Rack Extensions) telling they aren't so well integrated and they cause CPU's to be somewhat sluggish. I couldn't assure that since I don't have any of those in my add ons yet. I have an old MacBook Pro, a 2008 model with C2Duo Proccessor, and at the moment I am surprised by the smooth feel and stability I've got working with it. The new for me is that I can integrate my own live recordings and I can build a song fast, quite faster than any other DAW I were using/trying before. I can't talk in detail about the whole thing because I'm learning new things everyday with it and every new thing is an awesome feature I can play and experiment with. It's a good advice to take the program with very simple projects, having so much tools and toys to play on could get you dizziness with easy unless you are very familiar with its usage. Although the program is intuitive and easy to learn. The mixer section was revamped from the last version I knew, every track of the mixer has its own complete mastering tools per channel and that is a very desirable feature, since you can tweak every channel in very precise ways. Not to mention about automation, it's a pleasure to do it with the right control surfaces. By the way I have it fully integrated with a Novation Impulse 61 and a Line 6 FBV Express II pedal for volume and wah stuff. Another great touchdown is the driver for a 64 bit Rewire, that could be useful if your computer has another DAWs so you can synchronize your audio. Even like that you can work in 32 bit mode if your host DAW doesn't have that feature. The workflow of the program also is very flexible so you can find your own way to work on your projects. The effects in the live recording are non-destructible so you can change your settings even after your audio bounces. As a guitar player, my most preciated thing is to have Line 6 amp and bass emulation, all of those sound amazing in combination of clever presets along the new effects like alligator Echo or Pulveriser. I couldn't talk of every effect or tool in here because I could have to write a book, not a review, but for a musician this is like the toy is for a kid. Experiment with it, enjoy and create. I have to say I'm quite impressed by this piece of software, although I knew Reason from many years ago, I always liked what the program could do. Now it can do a lot more. If you are decided to work with small or big productions, if you are a solely guitar player, a producer or techno geek, this could be your definitive tool! that's my advice. Pros: -Runs smoothly -Endless possibilities with its vast presets and instruments -64 bit Rewire -Endless expansion possibilities with Rack Extensions -Fast editing and mixing -Line 6 Guitar and bass amps are integrated in DAW -The Echo, Alligator and Pulveriser are great additions of FX -Funny to use and experiment Cons: -You have to kill one USB port due to ignition key
