Comments about Peavey MiniMAX 500W Bass Amp Head:

After months of backorder, I received this amp yesterday. The amp is very portable, and the functionality/sound quality/features are great. However, the cooling fan is excessively loud. It's not noticeable when playing at full volume, but this amp is basically useless in a recording setting (unless going direct), playing at home by yourself, or in a smaller more intimate venue (i.e. coffee shop, acoustic show, etc). Peavey customer support did not see an issue with this since "it's not really noticeable when you're playing".

I'm still on the fence if I should keep this product since the sound quality/portability is exactly what I need, but will still use my regular SWR SM-900 rig (all 26 pounds of it) when playing smaller shows or practices.

    Great Bang for the Buck

Comments about Peavey MiniMAX 500W Bass Amp Head:

Nice little amp. Does it's job well. Besides the obvious benefits of its size and weight (meaning lack of!), my favorite feature is that Peavey seems to have figured out a bass amp doesn't need 15 knobs on the front panel to get a good sound. There are few push button features to compensate for this but they are out of the way and are pretty much "set and forget" thankfully. But I'm an old school guy and want good tone not more options. I 've only owned it for a short while so can't comment on its durability but hopefully it will retain Peaveys renowned reliability of its USA made products of yore.

Comments about Peavey MiniMAX 500W Bass Amp Head:

This is the hardest review I have ever written. I really like this amp in every way that matters. Great sound, very loud, good EQ adjustments, great features, light weight, solid build, and great price. However, the cooling fan is very loud and always on high speed. I read other reviews about the fan but thought they must just be sensitive. But they are not, it is loud to a very distractive level. Bottom line, if you are just looking for a gigging amp or a backup for your gigging amp, then this is an awesome option because the fan noise will not matter. But if, like me, you also want to use this as a home practice amp or studio amp, then don't buy it. Too bad, because one of the reasons I bought it was because it had an aux input so I could use it to practice and learn songs at home. But at home practice levels the fan is just impossible to deal with. Unfortunately, after having it for a couple of weeks and really wanting to like it, I have decided I can not live with it and will be taking it back to my local GC. For some reason, I am slightly mad at Peavey for the fan issue just because I know I would really love this amp if not for the wind tunnel fan noise. If not for that it might have even become my main gigging amp instead of a backup. Why could they not have put a two speed fan in that would only go to high speed when needed in a gigging situation? Why, Peavey?

Amazing little Class D marvel ...

Comments about Peavey MiniMAX 500W Bass Amp Head:

I went thru four Class D amps before hitting on this gem. I had myriad QA issues with them all and had almost sworn Class D amps. The Peavey, of course, has been bulletproof. I have no qualms gigging this without a back up. Even at 8 ohms this thing is mega loud, while going into a 4 ohm 2x12 or 4x10 it is massive. And the tone is just gorgeous. You can dial up anything with it. From SVT tube grind to GK scooped sparkle. It is a do-it-all unit.

The downside ... the fan is louder than most. But it's not loud enough to be a problem. And the upside is playing a four hour show and being able to turn it off and stick it right it into my gig bag.

In short ... I'm very impressed and totally in love with it.

Look, it's a good amp overall. The FAN is an issue if you're trying to record w/ a mic'd cab. I think this would do really well w/ a live band. All other functions and sound quality make it worthwhile.

Comments about Peavey MiniMAX 500W Bass Amp Head:

Fan apparently was not working, minimax almost caught my speaker cabinets on fire, they were smoking. I did get a replacement minimax unit from Peavey/Guitar Center ( Guitar Center Tri-County has been great on this ) but am awaiting Peavey's "decision" as to the reason for malfunction and speaker damage ( the unit was 10 minutes old :/ ). I am currently without a gigging outfit awaiting Peavey to make a decision to replace my 4x10 and 1x15. I am borrowing a cabinet from a friend and the new minimax is doing fine but am needing a turn around that doesn't take weeks. Not going to throw Peavey under the bus for one bad bass amp but I need this made right sooner rather than later. Come on Peavey Engineers, do your thing, this one's not rocket science. Currently Stunned.

Comments about Peavey MiniMAX 500W Bass Amp Head:

For the money, this thing is a beast. Loud and to the point. Got a good rock tone out of it right away. The aux and headphone jack are a nice feature. Also, the effects loop was clean sounding. The drawbacks are the fan is a bit loud to the point it's distracting, and more troublesome, if you turn this thing on or off without the mute switch being engaged you will get a terrible electronic niose pushed through your speakers. Even with with the mute on you will get a bit of a squeal through your speaker when you power it on.
