Powerful and portable, the Peavey 6505 Piranha follows in the footsteps of the popular 6505 MH mini head by packing high-gain tones into an even smaller, 20W tube hybrid power amp head. Small enough to use in a bedroom, but powerful enough for the studio, the 6505 Piranha harnesses the full gain and legendary tone of the 6505 Series.
The 6505 Piranha adds a few tricks of its own, including a bright switch along with a unique "scoop" control to achieve a wide array of tones with few controls. Additional features include the 20-watt (RMS) solid state power amp, one 4-ohm speaker output, a buffered FX loop, aux. input, headphone out, 12AX7 preamp tube and tooled metal cabinet.
This potent practice- and studio-tooled head offers staggeringly simple controls that feature just a gain knob, single EQ control, volume and a crunch/lead button for thicker/smoother gain. The tone control is a 3-band EQ compressed into one knob, so full left is a "10-0-7" scooped tone to "7-7-7" at the 12 o'clock setting to "10-10-10" when rolled full right.
Power: 20W (hybrid)
Tube: one 12AX7 (preamp)
Single channel
Single input
Impedance: 4 ohms minimum
Controls: gain, EQ, volume, crunch/lead switch
Buffered FX loop
Aux. input
Headphone output

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:
Tried this tiny amp through a MX212 Marshall Cabinet because the shop owner said it would be as good as the Micro Terror. NOOOOO!!! it is the polar opposite This thing sounds like a childs toy in comparison. Micro Terror and Dark blow this thing out of the water. Don't buy.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:
Great metal rhythm guitar tone when using clean OD boost. Gain on 10-11 o clock and tone at 9 o clock. Tone knob is very limited in dialing in a sound. Would recommend an eq pedal to really dial a tone in.
Would not compare this to Orange micro heads whatsoever. Not sure why previous reviewer was told that. Rob Chapman did a comparison video on YouTube and they don't sound alike at all.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:
This is an excellent little amp for the money. It sounds great if your into metal or hard rock, and it is super portable and easy to use. It has a send and return which as it is expected. The amp also reacts well to volume control on the guitar. It cleans up nicely when rolling the volume back. The only thing I would say is to probably have an eq pedal, so the tone can be shaped a little better. Overall, I love this amp.

Best Modern Heavy Metal Practice Amp
Pros
Cons

Comments about Peavey 6505 Piranha 20W Tube Hybrid Guitar Amp Head:
I bought this amp for practice. If you love the Peavey 5150 and 6505 series this is a great amp for practicing and if you are a bedroom guitar player. This amp has the same sound and tone of a Peavey 5150/6505. This amp is mostly solid state but does have one preamp tube to give your sound a big kick. In my opinion this is the best mostly solid state type of amp, if you listen to modern heavy metal and the heaviest sounding heavy metal. Hard Rock is the only other type of music that would work best for this amp. I mean sure you could play other types of music on this amp, but you are mostly going to get heavily distorted sounds through this amp. This amp was made for brutal sounding heavy metal. You can make this amp sound almost as melo as James Taylor for an example, but that would be the gain knob almost to zero to get to the clean sounds. Even though you can get an okay clean sound on this amp, it is not the cleanest sound you can get out of an amp. For Hard Rock this amp is perfect for playing Van Halen. You might be able to get a good Guns And Roses sound and maybe Ozzy Osborne sound. Compared to the 120 watt 5150 and 6505 heads this amp doesn't quite have all of the sounds of those amps, but it has the main sound you get out of those amps. This is a perfect amp for practicing and having a general fun time. It can be played extremely quiet and loud enough. I wouldn't say it is loud enough to play for gigs unless you are playing at a tiny bar. Perfect amp if you love Hard Rock and modern heavy metal. You could even play some Thrash Metal on this amp but this amp was made for mostly 90's and 2000's heavy metal. It's good for pretty much all modern heavy metal from regular heavy metal, Black Metal, Alternative Metal, Power Metal, Viking Metal, Folk Metal, Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Blackened Death Metal, Melodic Blackened Death Metal, Metalcore, Deathcore, Rapcore, Glam Metal, Christian Metal, Groove Metal, and more genres. If you want louder amp get 6505+
