This guitar is all about versatility. Replacing the traditional hum-single-hum configuration with three Narrowfield„¢ pickups paired with a 5-way blade switch, the Swamp Ash Special offers a multitude of switching possibilities. The Narrowfield„¢ pickups focus the string attack much like a single-coil but are hum canceling. The result is a new sounding pickup system, which blends features of single-coil, soap bar, and humbucking pickups.
The Swamp Ash Special has also been updated with a Pattern Regular neck shape and V12 finish.
Finish should enhance the look, sound, and feel of a guitar by accentuating the wood's inherent beauty and feel without hindering its natural resonance. And PRS Guitars' new "V12" finish does just that. Introduced at Experience PRS 2010, "V12" is a very thin, hard, and clear finish that will not crack or react with thinners. After roughly 12 years in development, it is halfway between acrylic and nitro but with a classic feel all its own. "PRS models with this new finish feel like old instruments," said Paul Reed Smith.
Pattern Regular Shape
Neck shapes have always been a high priority for PRS and a hallmark of PRS quality. A guitar should feel comfortable, like "home," as soon as you pick it up, and the neck is paramount to that connection. The new "Pattern Regular" neck shape is similar to the traditional PRS regular neck found on guitars made in the late 80's at PRS's former Virginia Avenue location.
This new neck shape reflects modern tooling and programming that allows PRS to even more precisely shape and consistently reproduce their necks.

Pictures "even good ones" don't due this guitar justice. I would definitely suggest one of the finish colors that show off the wood grain. Quality and part fit are excellent, inlays are super, they show off very nicely on the maple neck. Plugged the guitar into my Mesa Express 5-50, very nice tones "quite a bit different than my other guitars" tones are clean but full, the tone between switch positions span a much wider range than when listening to a internet demo. Nice light weight "greatly appreciated when using a guitar strap", little different neck shape, feels good, but will take a little getting use to. Excellent finish, the neck is very lightly coated giving it a very smooth satin like feel. I would recommend this guitar if your really looking for a quality instrument.
I have been playing for 50 sum years and this guitar will be at my side at the end. The weight is very tolerable, the pick up are great and the neck is great. I would recommend this guitar to all that play a lot, I really like it.
This is my first PRS, and now I see what all the fuss is about. It is the most playable guitar I've ever owned. I've been playing guitar for 30 years, and this guitar inspires me to play, to practice, like none other. I was lucky enough to get the vintage natural with the maple neck. Can't say enough about the maple neck, and the guitar itself is a work of art...a thing of beauty. The guitar exceeds my skill level, but it beckons me to join it...hopefully some day I will.
