Description
The TASCAM DP-24SD 24-Track Digital Portastudio is an all-in-one recording solution for musicians seeking professional results without complex computer interfaces. Featuring eight XLR microphone inputs, 24 recording tracks and a built-in mixer with 10 digital effects processors, the DP-24SD provides everything needed to capture pristine audio and craft radio-ready mixes.
Eight Channels of Crystal-Clear Preamps
The DP-24SD's eight microphone preamps ensure that every nuance of your performance is translated accurately to digital format. With switchable +48V phantom power, the preamps handle both condenser and dynamic microphones with ease. Monitoring each input and output is simple thanks to the unit's large full-color LCD screen.
Powerful Onboard Effects and Mastering Tools
Shape your sound and polish your mixes with the DP-24SD's comprehensive built-in effects, which include compression, EQ, reverb, delay, guitar amp modeling and more across 10 separate effects processors. The master section provides final touches like multi-band EQ, limiting and normalization. With these professional tools at your fingertips, you can craft radio-ready mixes and masters entirely within the DP-24SD.
Simple, Intuitive Workflow
Despite its impressive capabilities, the DP-24SD is designed to keep music making fun. With its straightforward interface, tactile control surface and clear display, the creative process remains inspiring rather than tedious. Recording, overdubbing, editing and mixing are intuitive, allowing you to focus on the music rather than technical details.
High-Capacity Storage and Versatile I/O
Record up to 8 tracks simultaneously to the DP-24SD's built-in 80GB hard drive. Completed productions can be exported via USB to a computer for sharing and distribution or saved to SD card. Analog and digital I/O—including MIDI, word clock and S/PDIF—provide connectivity for outboard gear, instruments and more.

Success...Finally!!
This recorder ended almost a decade of frustration overnight. Yeah, I'm tech savvy enough, but I've struggled with PC based recording since it first hit the market. After spending bags of cash and uncounted hours of my life trying to resolve incompatibility issues, hardware integration problems and complete a master-ready project, I finally gave up and ordered this unit. In one session, I was able to complete a demo project. Something I haven't ever accomplished with the PC. I laid down the tracks using the intuitive hardware controls. I used mics, MIDI inputs and direct line inputs. I mixed it down and nothing disappeared into some hidden reservoir of broken electrons. I produced a finished product that sounded great on playback. My only regret? I wish I had all the wasted hours back. There was music lost via the PC that I will never recover. I think the bottom line is this: If you are a musician who wants to create music first and recording is the tool you use to get there, this low-cost high performance unit is for you. If you are a recording geek first and that's your focus, the PC will give you far more puzzles to solve and arcane technology to take out to the message boards. As for me, I would buy this unit again all day long. It delivers exactly what it promises as a price lower than a lot of software packages.

I would not buy this again.
I've had my Tascam for about 8 months now and I would NOT buy it again if there were anything else out there that was worth it. This unit is not very user friendly. Yet, it is the best out there from what I can find. No one makes a serious recorder as everything has shifted to what I consider unacceptable and that is computer programs. Mixing with a computer completely sucks as far as I am concerned. Recorders that claim to be 24 tracks or 32 tracks that do not have 24 or 32 sliders for each channel are just a cheap way of what I consider false advertisement. I can deal with the limited inputs available at one time like this unit has only 8. The mastering of a recording sucks with this mixer but barely manageable. You cannot pan while mastering or adjust any EQ or effects sends. You have to set it and just go with what it is set at. You are also stuck with using only 1 effect for every channel. I was looking into the 32 but that is even worse as you really only get 2 more independent channels to mix. It has 12 stereo channels and only 8 individual channels. This 24 track has 12 independent channels and 6 stereo. That is 18 channels. About the same as the 32 track that has 20. The pan button sticks. You have to turn it like 5 full turns to one direction to get the pan over. Then 100 to go to the other side. So panning is really not possible even if it were available at mixdown. A simple pan knob for every channel would solve this major problem. Recording is relatively easy but that is about the only plus which should be just standard. I'm still looking for a decent recorder don't think I will ever find one in todays environment unless I design and make it myself. Only part I would have a problem with is the programming. Wish I had an old analog 24 or 32 track tape recorder. Those were user friendly and designed great. designers got stupid when they went to digital.

We are a Christian Band and greatly desire to put this use for recordings. We have produced songs via DAW, Computers and PA systems, but only for copyright and to introduce ourselves to other congregations. We have played at services in Nevada, and are excited to produce best.

I write and record originals and go for an organic sound which the DP 24 allows me to create with mic placement, effects choices, separation and capturing authentic sounds to record! Great unit!

My old Roland Boss recording console allowed me to plug my guitar directly into the recorder and then dial up an appropriate virtual tone. This way, I could, for example, record heavily distorted guitar without making any noise in my apartment. (I would listen through headphones instead of monitors.) Does this Tascam product also have these capabilities? If so, is there a good range of guitar tones to choose from? Thanks.
It doesn't have the effects but it will allow you to adjust tone and other settings.submitted4 years ago
